Does your toddler ever mix up pronouns?
I remember my (Carly’s) daughter would say, “Mama, carry you me!” and it was just so cute.
If your toddler mixes up their pronouns too, don’t worry too much. It’s very common. It makes sense too, because they’re always hearing pronouns modeled in the opposite way!
(My daughter was used to hearing me say, “I’ll carry you!” She didn’t understand that she needed to use the opposite pronoun for herself.)
🌈 We want to keep communication positive for little learners, so there's no need to over-correct pronoun confusion. Just keep modeling the right way to use pronouns yourself. Most kids will eventually start to get it on their own.
Also, if you have multiple littles at home, try paying attention to how your YOUNGER children pick up pronouns compared to your first.
⚡Because fun fact: Younger siblings are often more advanced in their pronoun usage!
We think this is because younger children overhear conversations in the home where family members are modeling the use of pronouns. Whereas, with first-born children, everything is really child-directed. So they just don’t hear as many pronouns.
👶 How are your toddler and pronouns getting along right now? Is it confusing for them or are they getting the hang of it?
