This is a reminder that if we aren't responsible and respectful with our dogs, we will lose the opportunity to take them with us in public places.

So please...
1) Pick up after your dog - and if you don't have a bag, go find one and come back for it (it does not magically compost overnight)

2) Keep them under control, and

3) Don't let them approach anyone who hasn't requested it. Remember that not everyone wants to interact with your dog, no matter how friendly they are, not even if they have a dog themselves!

If we all followed these basic guidelines, we wouldn't give any of the haters anything to complain about or grounds to take more of our dog walking spaces away (Saanich, anyone?).

And to those of you who already do these things, thank you!

I was really disappointed today when I learned that the Butchart Gardens will not be allowing dogs on the grounds from 3 - 8pm during their Christmas season anymore due to the number of complaints they got about dog p**p not being picked up and people's dogs being a nuisance to other guests last year.

What's it going to take to get others to realise that all of us dog owners are 100% responsible for our dogs (and their excrement) and not everyone in the free world is interested in interacting with them??

If we want the privilege of bringing our dogs with us to a variety of businesses and public places to continue, WE ALL NEED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR HOW WE AND OUR DOGS SHOW UP IN THEM.

This is a privilege, not a right, and it's our job to honour it.

Here is what Butchart's website says for those who are interested:

"While the Butchart Gardens welcomes well-behaved leashed pets, we do not permit disobedient owners. During the past Christmas season, we received several complaints from visitors concerned about safety and p**p. While most owners adhere to our short-leash and pick-up policy, our narrow pathways, steps and festive lighting can make maneuvering around pets difficult.

To that end, we will be implementing a change in our pet policy from December 1st through January 6th whereby pets will not be permitted between 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM.

When visiting The Gardens with your pet:

-Please ensure you are fully aware of what your dog is doing at all times.
-Pick up after your pet so that others do not step in anything unpleasant. Waste bags are available when you enter The Gardens as well as in the parking lot, at the Ross Fountain, the Carousel Patio and the Wharf Lookout. Litter can be deposited into garbage cans designated for trash.
-Use a 4-foot maximum length leash in order to keep your dog close by. No retractable leashes permitted.
-Avoid interactions with other dogs to maintain the comfort and safety of all our visitors.

Please help with these simple rules as we do not want to be forced to ban pets altogether"

For those of you who go the extra mile and keep your dogs under control AND pick up extra dog p**p when you see it, thank you!! The rest of us do appreciate the effort you're making to compensate for those who can't be bothered.

EDITED TO ADD: I missed including this part of Butchart's statement in my original post - "Please help with these simple rules as we do not want to be forced to ban pets altogether."

It means a lot to us when clients leave such great reviews. If you’re looking to join one of our group classes, we have a few spots left in our Puppy SuperStart (for puppies under 20 weeks of age) and Mind Your Manners classes (for dogs and puppies over 5 months) starting this week.

Looking to work on your dogs foundation training and give their listening skills a boost? We have both Puppy SuperStart and Mind Your Manners classes starting next week!

Here’s what one of our Manners grads had to say, along with a video showing how well her dog has been doing with her loose leash walking since completing the classes.

Hi Darcie,

I wanted to share Juno’s progress…thanks to your help. We were in your mind your manners class in the summer. She’ll likely need some more training….but I was so happy with this!

Thanks.

We just released our final Total Recall classes of the year and there are only two spots left! This class teaches your dog to turn on a dime and come immediately to you when you call.

Right after we finished the last round of classes, we got this email from Ann, one of the graduates:

*********
Subject: Success!

Hi Darcie,

Only one week after our final Total Recall class I was able to put our new skills to good use today. We were walking on the Thetis/Francis King Panhandle trail with Evie off leash when she detected a commercial dog walker around a bend in the trail and took off at high speed towards the pack.

Luckily I had my whistle on its lanyard around my neck. One blow on it and Evie turned on a dime before she reached the dogs and hightailed it back to me at lightening speed for her cheese. Such a relief for everyone!

I now am even more confident in occasionally allowing her off leash in relatively quiet locations.

Thank you so much!

🤩Success Story!!🤩

Winston is a 1 year old Mini Dachshund who has been afraid of, and therefore very reactive to, animals that are bigger than him. He would run, charge and bark aggressively at them even from hundreds of feet away.

We've done two lessons at a farm with llamas and horses and his mama has done a lot of work with him in between those lessons. There's still more training to do but, after only three weeks of training so far, Bekkie just emailed this update:

*********
Hi Darcie!

This photo isn’t great but it’s the only one I got as it was too hard to multitask and ensure I was picking up on Winston’s reactions.

But I wanted to tell you he was excellent this morning with these horses!!! He sniffed, with a relaxed tail and relaxed body. And he would look away from them at other things like it was no big deal. Lots and lots of sniffing!

I see such a change in him since we’ve been upping our training. It’s such a relief after feeling so overwhelmed! Dogs are such a responsibility!

Thank you so much!!

Bekkie

I'm super proud of this team because they are an excellent example of what you can accomplish in a short time when you put the time and effort in. Go Team Winston! 🥳

We only have two spots left in our Puppy SuperStart classes, beginning this Thursday, July 11th. And bonus - they're held in a nice, cool indoor facility. 😎

If you're planning on welcoming a new puppy into your home, and the puppy will be between 10 - 20 weeks old on July 11th, this class is for you!

We cover everything that is vitally important for pups to start learning from day one, from:

🐾proper play with other puppies
🐾positive experiences with new humans
🐾exposure to a wide variety of novel activities and items to ensure they can handle anything the world throws at them (our obstacle course is a client favourite!)
🐾how to comfortably allow handling for exams, nail trims and grooming
🐾a solid obedience foundation - your pup will know how to sit, lie down, come when called, leave things alone when told and even settle and relax with you when you're in a busy public environment!

👉You'll also receive weekly emails outlining everything that was covered in class to make practicing at home a breeze, even if you have to miss a week.

It's much easier to prevent problem behaviour from happening than to fix it once it's already there, which is exactly why attending puppy classes is so important and such a great investment in your future together.

So if having a pup that's easy to live with and a pleasure to take on outings is what you envision, this is the place to start.

Great advice for how to keep your dogs comfortable during the fireworks this weekend, courtesy of The Collared Scholar.

Every year, I care for dozens of dogs on the 4th of July holiday.

And in our area, fireworks are a big deal.

But the awesome thing is…

The dogs all do fine.

Even the ones with phobias.

In fact, getting dogs past their fears is a specialty of mine.

My dog Boston came to me with an incredible fear of fireworks and now he enjoys hanging outside with me while I watch the show.

One of the ways we do it is by creating a SAFE ZONE and letting dogs hang there during the festivities.

The SAFE ZONE is inside, ideally away from exterior doors and windows (I don’t have a space like that in my house so the living room has to do)

We flip on ALL the lights so the flashes can’t be seen (and they stay on all night)

We provide ambient noise (TV or music, AND running a fan/white noise machine)

And most importantly, we provide something to absorb the concussion of the fireworks.

We either prop their crates on a few dog beds or several blankets,…

Or we pick the entire crate up and put it on our bed (we have bunk beds at our facility that work great for elevating dogs as needed - we only do this for the nervous nellies)…

If we are at home, the dogs just lounge on the sofa (but can access the open, elevated crate if they feel the need to retreat or hide).

We don’t fret over worried dogs (I’m not going to get worried alongside them - they wouldn’t know I was worried about them and not the fireworks)…

But rather, we make a party out of it.

We play, they get their favorite bones, and I might give them a massage to help soothe them.

This combo has, knock wood, never failed me…

Even though we have some dogs with phobias (last year we had 3), they are never stressed inside and always rest comfortably through the night.

If you’d like to know how I got my personal dog over his fear of fireworks, let me know and I’ll make a post.

And FYI, I always share video to my stories of all the dogs during the festivities - I hear the new basset I have has a firework phobia so I plan to help her through it and I’ll do my best to share what we do, as we go.

How does your dog feel about fireworks?

☀️Dog Friendly Businesses☀️

It’s that time of year when outside temps make it too hot to safely leave your dogs in the car (and no, cracking the windows open a couple of inches isn’t enough to keep the temp down in there).

But we have a solution! So many businesses are dog friendly, allowing you to bring your dog in or sit on the patio with you, that we have created a list and interactive map for you to keep track of them all.

https://communicanine.ca/dog-friendly-businesses/

If you know of one that isn’t on here or have one you’d like added, comment below or email [email protected].

We’ll be adding close to two dozen more this week so check back for updates.

I'm making some Pride shirts for the upcoming Pride Sidney event on June 15th. Several people have asked if they can buy one so I thought I'd put it up here to see if anyone else wants one before I place the order?

Not sure exact cost yet but likely around $30. If you'd like one, comment here or email [email protected] with the size you wear. They'll be printed on white Denver Hayes t-shirts from Marks for reference of what styles are available.

Once I know the exact cost, I'll need payment in advance to confirm all requested shirts are picked up.

Jill and Simon just recently completed our Total Recall class and sent us this lovely message. They've taken a number of classes with us both recently and in the past with their older dog.

Thank you very much for another fantastic class. Both Chris and I (and now Simon as well) are huge fans of the CommuniCanine experience, the style of classes, amount of support and resources provided as follow up.

Simon and I are currently also enrolled in other classes with other organizations....and it's so noticeable that your approach is to set them up for success while learning every step of the way, which is so appreciated and also (IMO) allows the dogs to learn faster.

I also want to add that the diversity of classes offered is awesome! We have our 10 yr old dog, Archer, on a waitlist for the next tricks class, while our puppy participates in your SuperStart class. We love that all ages and abilities can participate in the classes.

Hope to see you for more classes in the future!

Not every dog would be able to handle this type of situation, never mind with this level of chill. But our staff trainer, Sarah, has put so much time and effort into giving Gus the best training and life experience foundation from the day she got him that he made hanging at the Victoria Day parade today look like he was born to be there. He chilled by her side the whole time, despite the noise, bikes and motorbikes going by and even horses coming up into his face!

Even though we're trainers, our dogs, like anyone else's, don't always behave like stellar citizens. But it's those bad and, let's be honest, sometimes very embarrassing moments that make us appreciate these good ones that much more.

Wishing you all an amazing Victoria Day with your dogs. 🐶🌞

Would your dog come to you if faced with this challenging scenario? As you can see, Ruby is being fed treats by Sarah who is holding her while a group of noisy dogs and people approaches. Yet, when her owner calls her from several hundred feet away, without hesitation she turns on her heels and runs right to her!

If this is a pipe dream, then we invite you to our Total Recall class! We have one opening left in our class starting Friday, May 24th at 10:30am.

UPDATE: The class is now full!

If you’re interested in registering but this one doesn’t work for you, contact us at [email protected] to be put on our waitlist. We’ll be running one more series of daytime and evening classes later in the summer.

While I would never normally post a Gofundme here, this one is very personal to me (Darcie) and also happens to touch the dog community in a big way.

Many of you know Krista as the nail trimming wizard at Pets West. She has been a professional groomer for 26 years, running Krazy K9’s in home grooming, and was also a professional dog trainer for many years.

Recently she was given the life changing diagnosis of an aggressive form of cancer. Within a week, she went from seemingly healthy and living a normal life to hospitalized which is where she's been receiving treatment ever since.

Because both her and her husband are self employed, their income is at a standstill as they fight this together, but of course they still have bills to pay and their kids to take care of and everything else that doesn't stop in the face of these situations.

If you feel compelled, the family would be more than appreciative of your support. And any donations they receive will give Krista a much needed boost knowing that she has a community standing behind her. Even if donating isn't an option, sharing this would mean a lot.

We always appreciate when clients take take the time to tell us how our training has impacted their lives with their dogs. This was a wonderful update to get from Erin whose dog was previously very dog reactive.

Hi Darcie!

I wanted to send you an update to let you know how well Bosley has been doing.

We have been going for walks at the Gorge and various beaches, and he is doing so well! Sometimes he wants to meet other dogs, other times he wants to avoid them, but he is no longer reactive.

He has made friends with the new puppy who lives upstairs and shares the yard, and I no longer have to worry about taking him out on a leash, he can run free and play. This has alleviated so much anxiety in my daily life.

Dog walkers are able to take him out and always say he is such a sweet boy. We dog sat a friend’s Labradoodle this past weekend and they played and slept on the same bed.

He is living his best life and so am I! We are even thinking of joining the next Dachshund meetup in town.

I wanted to say a huge thank you because the training sessions with you helped both of us build so much confidence! I can’t believe the anxiety it has relieved for both of us.

I’ll likely book again in the summer:) I hope all is well with you!

This week’s Puppy SuperStart students aced our obstacle course!

The course is designed to build confidence, resilience, willingness to interact with new things, body awareness, agility and most of all, to have fun with your puppy while you both learn and experience new things together in a fun, positive environment. It’s consistently a client favourite.

This is just one of the many things we cover in this class, including foundation obedience commands (sit, down, come, leave-it) and co-operative handling for grooming, nail trims and vet visits.

If you’ve got a new puppy and are looking to start them on the right paw, look no further.
