Happy ! Started in 1938 by the National Wildlife Federation, this week is all about celebrating the beauty and diversity of North America’s wildlife, their habitats, and how we can help these incredible species thrive.

Together, the Wilder Institute and the Calgary Zoo are working to save some of our nation’s most endangered species – like the Vancouver Island marmot.

Found only in Canada, Vancouver Island marmots are one of the largest members of the squirrel family measuring about 65-70 cm nose to tail and weighing 4.5 - 7.5 kg — the same size as an average house cat!

In 2003, there was less than 33 Vancouver Island marmots left in the wild. But thanks to collaborative efforts, conservation breeding and release programs, their wild population is now up to ~250! Learn how you can help support our efforts to recover the Vancouver Island marmot over at WilderInstitute.org.

Today is 🐟 – a day of awareness dedicated to aquatic animals like the Northern rockhopper penguin! They may be the smallest penguins we care for, but some might say they're definitely the loudest! 🔊

Northern rockhoppers are not widespread. They breed in some of the most remote islands in the world, and sadly they are considered endangered. The population in the wild is in rapid decline due to threats from overfishing, pollution, invasive predators, and climate change.

Here at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo, all 4 of our penguin species (Northern rockhopper, king, Humboldt, and gentoo) are part of a Species Survival Plan (SSP) designed to ensure the best genetic diversity within each population!

Conservation is crucial to ensure this charismatic birds, and other endangered aquatic animals out there, are given the respect they deserve! By raising awareness and supporting accredited zoos and aquariums (like us!), we can continue to help aquatic animals at-risk! 🐧

a group of ferrets is called business? Today is so we thought it only fitting to introduce you to our business - ‘Leo’, ‘Squeek’ and ‘Myllo’!

You won’t see them on a regular visit to the zoo as they are part of our Program Animals. As ambassadors for their species, they help our Conservation Education team to educate thousands of students and campers each year about the importance of responsible pet ownership and doing research before making a purchase.

While ferrets do spend a fair amount of the day sleeping (14-18 hrs!), when they are awake they are high-energy, inquisitive, and smart! Like all species, they require opportunities to explore and exercise. Our Animal Care team frequently changes up elements of their habitat – creating mazes, tunnels and climbing structures - to stimulate them mentally and physically. It’s all a part of providing world-class animal care.

Time for a Update! 🦍🍼 This will be the first offspring for our western lowland gorilla parents-to-be, ‘Dossi’ and ‘Jasiri’, and the first gorilla infant in the troop since Kimani was born in 2016. Our Animal Care, Health & Welfare team have been busy getting ready for the (gorilla) bundle of joy by:

🍼 Training with Dossi to have her bring an item (in this case a small piece of firehose to represent a ‘baby’) close to the mesh for her care team to view while they hold a bottle near the item. Getting Dossi comfortable with bringing items close to a bottle and close to the animal care technician is very important as it will allow the care team to visually examine the infant and have access to provide supplemental feeding, if needed. The care team is also doing this training with the other females in the troop and we're happy to share that the training is going great all around!

🦍 Preparing the habitat for a little one by installing privacy mesh on the windows, removing some larger enrichment items, securing the heavier mesh feeders at a safe height and bringing in more bedding to both the main habitat and back of house areas.

Dossi’s parturition date is expected to be late-April or early May but her dedicated care team are keep a close watch and monitoring her for any signs of labour. Be sure follow to stay up-to-date on all the .

Our President & CEO, Dr. Clément Lanthier, was on the CBC Calgary’s Eyeopener this morning to speak about the powerful implications of the Jane Goodall Act in Canada and why we are honoured to have contributed our expertise to this historic legislation.

Supported by world-renowned conservationist, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace, Dr. Jane Goodall, along with a coalition of government, conservationists, animal welfare groups, and accredited zoos, Bill S-241 will ensure the welfare of countless animals across Canada.

In the words of Dr. Goodall: "Together we can and will provide a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves and put an end to the misery that is wildlife trafficking." Watch the video to learn more.

To hear Dr. Lanthier’s remarks about the critical role accredited zoos, like the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo, play in wildlife conservation and why he urges other institutions to step up and invest in animal welfare, conservation, and education, click here: https://bit.ly/375F9ru

Happy Birthday, Samkha! Our male Amur tiger turns 10-years-old today! 🐯🎉

Amur tigers, also known as Siberian tigers, are the largest cats in the world. A male can weigh up to 306 kg (675 lbs) and measure up to 3.7 m (12 ft) long. Samkha weighs in at a whopping ~200 kg (440 lbs)!

Samkha was born at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo in 2012? After 8 years away, he returned home to Calgary in December 2021 as a Species Survival Plan (SSP) breeding recommendation for our female Amur tiger, Sarma. Today is a particularly heartwarming day for staff and volunteers across the zoo who were here when Samkha was born and now get to celebrate his big one-oh!

In time, we hope that Samkha and Sarma will contribute to the legacy of Amur tiger conservation with a litter of cubs of their own. With an estimated 540 individuals left in the wild, Amur tigers are endangered so supporting them to successfully produce offspring is critical for the international efforts to save wild Amur tigers from extinction.

Join us in wishing a very Happy 10th Birthday to 'Ollie', the Bactrian camel!🎉

a camel’s hump stores fat – not water? They can use these fat reserves as an energy source when food is scarce. In the wild, camels live in harsh environments so they’ll eat any leaves, grasses and shrubs they find – including thorny plants that other herbivores ignore. Similar to cows and other ruminants, digestion isn’t a one-way trip! Camels swallow partially chewed food, then regurgitate it (known as cud) and chew it again to aid in digestion. So if it looks like a camel is always chewing something, it’s because they are!

Be sure you stop by to visit our caravan of camels, Ollie and Zsa-Zsa, in Exploration Asia on your next visit.

Have you HERD the news? We’re excited to share the next phase of the Canadian Wilds redevelopment is on the horizon. To create some exciting new habitats and spaces in the Canadian Wilds, we are undergoing a massive construction project which will temporarily shift pathways and move some animals offsite until the construction is completed.

Commencing on April 19, 2022, the Canadian Wilds will have two viewing paths:

▶️ North path – enter through the top entrance, travel through to the Jihad Shibley Rocky Mountain Aviary and back. On this journey, you will see bighorn sheep, rocky mountain goats, and the aviary species.

▶️ South path - enter through the lower entrance by the zoo bridge, travel along the pathway through to the Brawn Family Foundation Bugtopia and back. On this route, you will see cougars, black bears, grizzly bears, North American porcupine, moose, and grey wolves.

We’re working hard to minimize impacts while continuing to provide the best possible experience for both our visitors and the animals we love and care for.

If you’re planning a visit to the zoo in the coming weeks, be sure you take a stroll through the Canadian Wilds to visit the woodland caribou, bison and whooping cranes before they say ‘good-bye’ until 2023. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3Lov4V4

They're back! 🦋 It's time to flutter over to the ENMAX Conservatory because the butterflies have returned to the Nutrien Garden of Life! Though the garden won’t be at full flutter until mid-May, butterflies have started to emerge and are flying about.

Here’s your chance to stroll amongst some of nature's most colorful creatures as they fly around the garden, and maybe even land on you!

butterflies actually have four wings? The wings closest to its head are called the forewings, while those in the rear are called the hindwings. Thanks to strong muscles in the butterfly’s thorax, all four wings move up and down in a figure-eight pattern during flight.

A beacon of HOPE for over 800 SPECIES!✨

Bill S-241, the Jane Goodall Act, was reintroduced this week by Senator Marty Klyne. The updated bill provides new legal protections for a broad range of over 800 species including big cats, great apes, bears, wolves, certain monkeys, dangerous reptiles such as crocodiles, and many more! The Jane Goodall Act has the support of a strong coalition of government, animal advocacy organizations, and Canada’s leading accredited zoos who have contributed their expertise to strengthening the bill.

“We are honoured to be part of this historic legislation,” said Dr. Clément Lanthier, President and CEO, Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo and President, World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA). “Every day at Canada’s leading zoos, our amazing teams of dedicated specialists work to ensure that the animals we love receive exceptional care. The Jane Goodall Act will ensure the welfare of countless captive animals across Canada.”

The game-changing legislation:

➡️ states that science, empathy and justice require everyone to respect the biological and ecological characteristics and needs of animals;

➡️ bans captivity of cetaceans, great apes, elephants and certain other non-domesticated animals except for justifiable purposes such as their best interests – including individual welfare and conservation, and non-harmful scientific research;

➡️ bans captivity of certain animals for performance for entertainment purposes;

➡️ affords designation to animal care organizations that meet the highest standards of animal care to permit them to continue to serve the best interests of animals across many species with regard to animal welfare, conservation, non-harmful scientific research and public education;

➡️ addresses wildlife trafficking by supporting bans on elephant ivory and rhinoceros horns, and other improvements through government regulations or amendments; and

➡️ affords designated animal care organizations the right to contribute to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, the provision of sanctuary for animals in need, and the restoration of wild populations and field research.

As the weather warms, our Humboldt penguins will be heading outside next week (weather permitting) to explore the outdoor habitat and burrows!

Native to Peru and Chile, Humboldt penguins are used to warm climates and even have some tricks for staying cool when temperatures really start to soar. ☀️ The pink patches on their face, under their wings, and on their webbed feet are actually areas of exposed skin. These patches help them stay cool by providing space for heat to escape amongst their otherwise dense, dark feathers! 🐧

Be sure to 'waddle' by the outdoor penguin habitat on your next visit to see if you can spot them outside!

📯 Hear ye, hear ye! 📯 We have a very important announcement as we have found a name befitting the royal fluffy one. By royal decree, we declare his royal highness shall forevermore be known as “Rupert”.

Rupert hatched on November 24, 2021 to seasoned king penguin mom, “Grace”. He is Grace’s third chick and the seventh successful king chick to hatch at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo as part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP) Program.

At just 4-months-old, this not-so-little chick still has lots of growing to do before he starts to get his sleek adult feathers. He’ll keep his roly-poly shape and fluffy down feathers for another 8 months or so, making him easy to spot on your next visit!

The time for hibernating is over (well almost)! Though our American black bears and grizzly bears haven’t fully emerged from their winter slumber just yet, the warm weather we’ve had recently has prompted some surprise sightings!

Both grizzly, ‘Khutzeymateen’, and American black bear, ‘Manuka’, were spotted poking their heads out for brief appearances this week before promptly returning to their warm dens. 🐻💤

Just as our resident bears will soon be waking, Alberta’s bears will soon be waking from their winter sleeps as well. Always be when you are in bear country – travel in groups, leash your dog, leave no trace, and never approach a bear in the wild. By being more ‘bear aware’ you help to avoid human-bear conflicts and keep wild bears safe.
