Cricket is on light exercise for a tender back leg so we are doing lots of mental stimulation. She's eating her meal today from a snuffle mat. These are great entertainment for dogs and you can practice your "wait" while you drop the food or treats into the mat. These work great for cats too!

You can buy a snuffle mat or make your own, I will include some simple instructions in the comments below.

Did you know saying the word "No" to your dog means very little to them. It is not a clear cue on what you want your pup to do. The word no may act as an interrupter to a behaviour but this will not stop the behaviour from happening again.

Rather than saying saying no try giving your pup an alternate behaviour to engage in instead.

Body language is how dogs communicate so it is important to learn what your dog or other dogs are telling you.
A wagging tail doesn't always mean an excited and friendly dog.

For those days when the weather isn't ideal for outside stimulation you can use puzzle toys to exhaust your dog. Mental stimulation is such a great way to tire out your pup.

Dogs love cool treats as much as we do during those hot summer days. One of my favourite and easiest to do is provide frozen kongs to help your pet cool down during the summer. Kongs are dishwasher safe (Bonus!!!) provide mental stimulation and relaxation. What's not to love!?!
Here are some ideas for different mixes for your pups Kong toy:
-plain yogurt (add some dog safe fruit like blueberries for a flavour boost)
-mashed banana
-pureed fruits and vegetables (be sure they are safe for dogs to eat and remove the pits and seeds before blending)
-canned dog food

*Avoid anything containing xylitol (sugar substitute) as this is toxic to dogs.*

Brachycephalic (short nosed ex. pugs, bulldogs, boxers, etc.) dogs have a higher risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke so be sure to monitor your dogs when outside and on walks during warmer weather.

Cooling bandanas and vests can help keep your dog a little cooler (and look stylish) when on your walks during the warmer days.

Enjoy the summer heat and be sure to keep your pup safe as well.

Let's talk communication buttons! Love them or hate them, they're super easy to teach.

Here are the steps to teach your dog to push a button to go outside.

1. Get yourself some communication buttons and record them to say "outside"
2. Place the button by your door where your pup typically goes out
3. When your pups signals they want to go outside, go over and have them press the button (can use targeting or even take their paw to press the button)
4. Open the door and head outside praising your dog
5. Repeat while your dog is learning exactly what the outside button means

No need to use any treats for this skill. We are just building a pattern of the dog pushing an outside button before going outside.
Great way to add some mental stimulation to your dogs life.
