Daisy is our Pet of the Week 🌼
Daisy was one of our first regular North walking clients! She is a fun-loving older gal who has no problem telling you how she feels about her day in howls and woos, especially if she hasn't seen one of us in a while. She has a watchful eye for bunnies and a super sniffer for knowing when kids have the best lunches ahead. She is the sweetest girl that we all love to walk 💛🐾

Aggression is the readiness to attack or confront.

Aggression is a term used by many when we see leash reactivity, a puppy learning bite inhibition, or a dog giving a warning. When labelling a dog as aggressive, what we usually mean is the dog is displaying aggressive behaviours. Aggression is an innate form of communication for dogs but can become problematic when it’s being triggered in normal daily interactions such as seeing a dog across the street.

When seeing a dog with leash reactivity, this is generally out of fear or frustration, and the dog is having BIG feelings, but that doesn't mean they intend to harm. Many dogs are totally fine meeting other dogs; they are just frustrated by the restriction. Some behaviours can include but are not limited to lunging, barking, growling, teeth bared.

A puppy playing or biting an owner isn't intentional. They are learning what is/is not acceptable both in play and bite inhibition. Bite inhibition is teaching a dog to use their mouth softly. Puppies start learning this while still with their littermates. If a puppy were to bite too hard, their littermate would yelp and stop play. Setting puppies up with social dogs for one on one play is important for puppies to learn from other dogs what is acceptable when biting and playing.

Dogs giving a warning like a lip curl or a growl can be unnerving to some, but to the dog, it is, "please stop, I don't like that". It is important that we never discipline a warning sign as the dog will learn that his warning is bad and could escalate to the next natural instinct, which is to bite. With dogs, ritualized aggression is to de-escalate conflict, not to increase it.

Aggression is part of communication and is often associated with fear, redirection, frustration, social conflict, protective, territorial, or pain, learning what is and what is not aggression is important to be able to understand your dog and how we can help.

The next time you label a dog aggressive, ask yourself, does the dog intend to harm, or are they giving me a warning or struggling with big feelings? Talk to a trainer as they will dig deeper into the behaviours and help you determine appropriate next steps.

👋Meet the Team…..Hi I’m Chantelle, the Owner/Founder of Whoa Doggie! This past year has been a dream come true, spending my days with the dogs.

My passion for dogs existed for as long as I can remember and a desire to be their best friend. My dog Ollie came into my life 12.5 years ago and I fell in love with him instantly! I have always wanted the best life for him and now, looking back, what I meant by that evolved so much. I decided to learn all I could about dog behaviour and communication and to find a way to spend more(all) my time with them. Enrichment became a very natural way for me to learn and build relationships with dogs, the more creative I got with it the more I discovered about what true enjoyment on both ends of the leash looked like. When Annie my 11 year old Pekingese joined our family 4 years ago, she brought along behaviours Ollie and I had not experienced before in his past dog siblings. Navigating to where their relationship is now led me to learn a lot about respecting their needs as individuals, while still valuing fun and enjoyment above all. I am passionate about dogs and as I do for my own Ollie & Annie providing all dogs with a truly enriching experience is my top priority!

👋Meet the Team…introducing Lorraine!
Her attention to detail and high quality of care has made her asset to the team! 🥰

Hi, my name is Lorraine Gilbert and believe that nobody can fully understand the meaning of love unless he/she has owned a dog or cat. I am an active and adventurous mature woman who has been fortunate through out my life to have loved many different types of dogs and cats (Corgi, Husky, Rescues Mixed Breeds, Bullmastiff, German Shepherd, Ragdoll, Tabby, Tortoiseshell and Rescue cats) to name a few.

Earlier this summer my 16 ½ year old Tortoiseshell Birdie felt her time helping me through life choices and support was all she could give me, and we said goodbye. Working with Whoa Doggie has provided me the opportunity to fill the gap of an empty home and sneak borrowed love from your treasured pet(s). I am looking forward to providing you and your pet(s) an uninterrupted and constant companionship, exercise and play schedule to allow you a worry-free time break.

👋 Meet The Team….introducing Mikayla! Joined us in Oct 2023, she sees our South Calgary clients regularly. Her passion for dogs has made her an integral part of this team 🫶🏻

Hi, my name is Mikayla,

I have absolutely loved dogs since before I can remember and have been working with them for almost ten years: dog walking, dog sitting, and grooming. I love working with all kinds of dogs: young, old, big, small, energetic, and quiet. I honestly can’t say I have a favourite! My high school had a therapy dog who was a sheltie. I helped train her from a puppy. Some of the breeds I have worked with include: dachshunds, shelties, golden retrievers, mastiffs, bulldogs, labs, golden doodles, and saint bernards. I have worked with puppies and helped to train them, as well as older dogs and everything in between. Being around dogs brings me immense joy; my goal is to do the same for them.

Meet the Team….introducing Dani!

She joined us in September 2023, quickly becoming an invaluable member providing care for many of wonderful clients💛🐾

Hi my name is Dani! I have grown up with dogs leading me to love working with them (and other animals) because they make me happy – majority of dogs love scratches, cuddles, learning new things, doing tricks and just being pet. I have looked after my neighbors, friends and sisters' pets; as well as I regularly volunteer with the rescue dogs at AARCS. I have interacted with a wide variety of breeds, sizes and temperaments of canines - and I even have experience with macaws and chameleons! Throughout my time with Whoa Doggie I have gained even more experience through Dog Walking, Pet Sitting, Playgroups, Training and Events. When I look after anyone’s pet, I treat them like my own and always send a detailed report card of my visits with your pets.
