How I've been 'sleeping' recently...๐Ÿ˜ฝ We officially have 3 new feline's calling RR home. Each of them arrived unplanned and with needs to be met. Get ready for more details soon, but let's start with the most serious.

A few days ago in the pitch black a tiny kitten wandered through our pastures. I was outside with the dogs who quickly alerted me to her high pitched crying. I soon caught the wee one and warmed her up as we checked the land and ditches around, but didn't find mom or siblings.

Checking the baby under better light, we discovered she had a cut across her nose and a mouth injury. Thankfully we were able to squeeze her in with our vet first thing to be examined, have xrays taken and ultimately be sent to surgery.

Here's what we know. Baby is a girl, around six weeks old. She suffered an unknown trauma that ripped through the skin of her bottom lip causing it to hang down. Our vet described it as running your tongue past your bottom teeth and having it flop out because there's no lip to stop it. Thankfully her jaw bone is intact.

Baby girl did great through surgery to repair her lip and received her first vaccinations. Despite the trauma she's experienced, she is a happy, playful, cuddly baby.

How this tiny one managed to make her way to our place and through the fields is a mystery. Though it's clear she was with her Momma until very recently.

More on her and the other new kids soon. Meanwhile, this baby's medical costs are stacking up with additional bills to come.

If you have a $1 to spare or the cost of a latte, it would make a WORLD of difference to our two human team and this sweet baby. ๐Ÿ’•

We just had Hay Day ๐ŸŒพ meaning we replenished our supply of bales for our rescue family. 204 bales this time which may sound like a lot, but it won't last us a month!

Hay is our greatest reoccurring expense at the sanctuary. Without enough land to feed the animals grass through summer, we buy and feed hay All Year Round. ๐ŸŒฑ
Every dollar donated makes SUCH a difference in helping our two person team carry the enormous and unrelenting load.

If you are able to spare a dollar, the cost of a latte or the change between your car seats, EVERY bit adds up to help feed the animals. โค

Billy in the blooms ๐ŸŒธ ๐Ÿท
A big thank you to everyone who sent Billy well wishes and love. We've been taking care of our A+ patient and his face absess has healed. Unfortunately his neck absess lingered and has required continued care.

Billy's on the mend again but I know he'd love if you kept the good vibes coming! ๐Ÿ’–

Billy boy arriving back home ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿท

Billy and I share such a loving and trust centered relationship. It was beautiful to see that connection offer comfort to Billy through his unease at the vet and keep him in good spirits.

Not sure what Billy's big vet trip was about? Be sure to read our last couple posts to catch up on all the details. Robin's Refuge

Billy The Brave ๐Ÿ’– This was while we were waiting to see the Dr and Bill was full of nervous chatter. Not one to turn down a massage though, Bill did relax for a little belly rub right before the Doc came to start the sedation which helped keep the energy calm.

Find the details on Billy's big vet visit in our last post, if you missed it.

Recently while giving Billy a belly rub I found a lump under his neck. A couple days later another lump near his jawline appeared.

It was concerning, but as Billy is prone to ingrown hairs I treated him with the usual warm compress and kept a close eye on things. When the compresses didn't help and both lumps began to rapidly increase in size it was an immediate call to book him in at the vet.

Tuesday morning Billy hopped in the trailer and we made the long drive to the clinic. Billy underwent sedation so he could be rolled onto his back for an ultrasound. Upon examination we received the best possible news. Both of Billy's lumps despite the different locations and sizes were abscesses. The Dr was able to open, drain and flush them right away and gave Billy pain meds and antibiotics.

When we returned to the sanctuary after our 6+ hour trip, I thought Bill might be upset, but he sauntered right off the trailer, itched his bottom on the ramp and headed over to the pig house to let everyone know that Big Man Bill was back home... and ready for a nap. ๐Ÿ˜ด

This was quite a scare and the major feelings since leaving the vet are relief and gratitude. Now to hope for an uncomplicated recovery for Billy, who's already back to his regular shenanigans. ๐Ÿท๐Ÿ’•

The Moo kids were not impressed by the crazy wind most of all, but the storm didn't last too long and the fields are drinking up the snow.

Over the last few weeks we've spent over $3,300 on health care between Randal's operation and aftercare costs, Ava's fall, dewormers and medications! It's a HUGE expense but when someone needs medical attention we do whatever we can to make it happen. Today Jude cut his neck, but thankfully it was minor enough and spotted right away that we could treat him here asap with our med kit.

With the cost of everything rising, our everyday expenses are going up too. The hay bill, straw & shavings, the produce & pig groceries, dog and cat food, grains and supplements. It piles up SO quickly.
It takes a lot of resources to keep a sanctuary running and now it's taking even more.

Every Single Dollar donated to RR goes right to our rescue family for their care.
Every act of kindness makes a huge difference in shouldering the enormous responsibility that is providing lifelong saftey and high quality care to each animal survivor who finds safety within our sanctuary.

As we are still fundraising for our Feb/March hay costs and will be facing more large vet bills in the next couple months (more on that soon), now is a *Much Needed and Appreciated* time to support RR.

Earlier in February, Randal had an emergency operation for a urinary blockage. We were prepared by our vet the risks are high for return complications and we've been caring for Randal very closely in the weeks following.

I'm absolutely blown away by his patience, ease of cooperation, and kindness through the entire process. It's truly insane that a short time ago he was feral. Distrusting of humans, scared and timid.
Watching him blossom over these last few months has been a rare and beautiful gift.

Through all of his medical woes, Randal has been very brave and what feels like relieved for the help. He recently returned to the vet for another check up and unfortunately his bladder is still a bit inflamed. Randal was prescribed another round of medications and we'll continue to monitor him until his next check.

I'm sure Randal would โค love โค to receive your positive healing energy if you wish to send some his way! ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿพ

Norman's been getting his steps in all day looking for the best puddles, and by the big grin on his face he's having THE best time! ๐Ÿท๐Ÿ’–

With the blanket of snow over the sanctuary melting so quickly, we've been dealing with some water pooling in low areas... which also means mud ๐Ÿ’ฉ The horses and cows could do without the mucky stuff, but the Pigren are loooving this spring weather! ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ’ฆ

Our Story

Located on a quiet piece of the Alberta prairie, Robinโ€™s Refuge is creating a haven for abused, discarded, and unwanted farmed animals. Given freedom of space, a life among family, and to live without exploitation, our residents are given the freedom to be individuals.

We are committed to advocating for all animals exploited and trapped in the animal agriculture industry. through public education.

While on a large scale, we may only be able to save a small handful of animals from the horrors of animal agriculture industry, for each of the animal residents who call Robinโ€™s Refuge home, the sanctuary was their last hope for a life at all. Our residents come from the darkest of pasts. Abused. beaten, tortured, maimed, disfigured, starved, deprived of touch or sunlight. Our residents are survivors.

At Robinโ€™s Refuge, we work to rehabilitate our animals on their own time, in a way that suits them best. We believe in treating our residents as the individuals they are, and in turn we watch them flourish and blossom into the confident and happy beings they were always intended to be!
