How much should our dogs be eating to stay healthy and fit?
There are a few main factors that go in to deciding how much to feed our pups.
Our basic deciding factors are:
1. Dog’s Size/ Ideal Weight
2. Dog’s Age
3. Activity Level
4. Intact or Spayed/Neutered
We start with calculating what 2% of our dog’s IDEAL weight is. Ideal weight may be different for a pet dog vs a dog that is training to be an agility world championship athlete! So keep that in mind when deciding. If you’re not sure what your dog’s ideal adult weight should be, a quick stop in at your vet clinic might be a good idea, to get a weight, and get your vet’s opinion on whether your dog could use to gain or lose weight. Small dogs generally eat proportionately more, so we suggest to start at 3% for small dogs.
Your dog’s age makes a significant difference! For a puppy, you should be calculating based on their estimated adult weight, and they will likely eat more due to their energy level. Just like people, as your dog ages, you may need to reduce their daily intake, as they will become less energetic.
Activity level is pretty simple! A more active dog will eat more than a less active one!
And last but not least, intact dogs usually burn more calories than spayed or neutered dogs. This isn’t always true, but definitely something to take into consideration!
To sum it up, we start at 2%-3% of your dog’s ideal adult weight, to feed daily. Add 1% if you have a young active intact dog. Start there, and keep a close eye on your dog’s weight, and adjust accordingly!
Otter and Beatrix are Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers, both about 30 pounds, but Beatrix eats twice as much as Otter! Beatrix is 3 years old, intact and has much more energy than Otter, who is 9 years old, spayed, and can mostly be found napping if she’s not at training! 🧡
