Has anyone ever signed up for a really amazing seminar, gotten a working spot, but have no idea what they want to work on? (I have 3 days to narrow it down)
What would you work on if you were to score a working spot with a top notch sport trainer?
Thanks!

Here are 6 reasons to add outdoor toy play to your dog's day or to their daily walk. Tug, Fetch, Tag, Switch, Steal and Strut are a few great games to play via toys with your dog.

💛 Helps fulfill their social needs. Actual connected time with you! (Not stare at a screen while we scratch their head)

👂 Really helps with listening when your dog is excited outside of playtime. (Drop it, come, Off and other cues are great to throw into toy play to spice it up and add some excitement)

🫶 Works on cooperative behaviour, this can facilitate polite social behaviour with other people and dogs ( like the picture above)

🚗 🐇 Puts value on you rather than distractions like people, wildlife, cars, other dogs.

💪 Gives you both a workout.

⌚ It isn't time consuming! Just 30 seconds-2 minutes is an optimal time for some really exciting play.

Tips to spice up your trail conversation!

🤔 Instead of... "You sure have your hands full"
💚 Say..."What a cool crew you have."

💪Rather than... "Who's walking who?"
🐕‍🦺 Comment... "What a wonderful walking partner you have there."

🫣When you want to shout... "They're friendly!"
🤗 Take Action... Leash up immediately, before your dog has a chance to display their full on amazing ness in someone's personal bubble. Then say "I hope you have a lovely day"

😚Instead of... "Nice ass!"
🤯🏋️Yell... "Your buttocks looks so strong and firm today"
(Kidding! Just wanted to see if anyone reads this s**t.)

We run across this so much. If you have sudden behaviour changes it will be well worth it to do some serious investigation, which may include specialist veterinary help (your family vet can refer you).

‘My dog is naughty/bad/untrainable/dominant/stupid’

I hear this most weeks on intake forms. Usually I get pretty excited to see these cos I know I’m gonna get to change a dog and owners life!

So often we write our dogs off as any adjective that fits the above and honestly, I’m yet to meet a dog who fits any of those adjectives (and I have worked with 10k plus dogs over the ten years I’ve been doing this!). I do however week in week out meet dogs with health issues that contribute to their slow progress in terms of training. Did you know dogs don’t show pain or discomfort how we do? We often think ‘oh he isn’t limping or yelping so he is fine’.

Please read the examples below ⬇️

🐾 A huntaway cross who I work with who bit his owner. Reluctant to have his feet cleaned, got spicy over any intense handling, had periods of seeming insanity and relentless barking and being unable to calm down. Huntaways are vocal dogs… but…

Turns out he had hip dysplasia. This dog didn’t limp. He wasn’t lame in any way. He chased his ball and sprinted and jumped and had no issues physically on the surface however under that behaviour was pain.

🐾 A French bulldog. Resource guarding to the extreme. Bit his owners while resource guarding the knot pattern in their wooden floor. Also bombed around without a worry in the world and had no outward signs of pain.

Turns out he had a severe spinal condition causing intermittent excruciating pain.

🐾 A young spaniel owned by a very good friend who was having confidence issues. She would ‘tap out’ of training on the regular and my friend went from ‘this is my ticket dog who will represent my country’ to ‘is this even possible?’

Dog had hormonal issues and likely spikes of hormones left right and centre. A carefully timed spay and she is now grade 6 in agility.

🐾 A friends Border Collie. Owned by a very experienced and talented agility handler and trainer. Regularly ‘checked out’ of training sessions, seemed to not be able to learn things that were moderately straightforward. Described by other trainers as ‘oh she is just a border collie it’s what they are like’.

Turns out she is mostly deaf.

🐾 A black Labrador. Always social and friendly and attended brilliant puppy classes and adolescent classes. Had the best start training wise you can imagine. He started showing some intermittent aggression to his owners in the home and aggression to other dogs out and about.

Turns out he had bilateral elbow dysplasia.

🐾 Young German Shepherd. Always energetic and silly in her behaviour but suddenly got worse. Excessive zoomies, inability to settle, increased reactivity to other dogs, reluctant to get in the car, obsessive destruction at home.

Turns out she had an infection in her va**na that was causing discomfort and exacerbating all those teenage behaviours to the point of being unmanageable.

🐾 My own dog! My NSDTR started missing his dog walk contact early last year. I was tearing my hair out trying to fix it.

Turns out he had a minor iliopsoas strain and some physio fixed the issue for us.

———————————

All these dogs have one thing in common. They are not stupid or untrainable or naughty or dominant. They are uncomfortable and that is triggering extreme behaviour fallout.

None of the above issues would be resolveable with training. All of the issues will be resolveable with training ONLY when the pain is resolved. Some of them will have drastic improvement from the moment the pain or discomfort is managed!

If your behaviourist or trainer doesn’t immediately advise a veterinary visit if any aggression, excessive ‘naughtiness’ or strange behaviour is present, walk away immediately. Even if you think your dog is fine, visit the vets. Ask for a thorough examination and push for a proper evaluation of your dog from nose to tail and potentially blood tests too. If you’re still not sure, get a second opinion.

You cannot train the pain or discomfort out of your dog. Address THIS first and foremost.

Capture attention on your walks. If it feels like your dog is totally into the environment you can capture small bits of attentiveness with a sound that predicts a reward or Hey! Just 'surprise m! # F #$' (as Jany Bohm says) then toss the reward.
What we think is attention (eye contact or orientation to us) may actually be an ear twitch, slight side eye or a nostril flare in our direction. The more exciting it is to hang with us the better we can compete with the environment. By capturing those moments when they check in with us, it helps to avoid nagging our dog when they are most concentrated on their environment.

Ummm, did I get us all in the selfie?
Senior companions. Sometimes keeping up with their care can feel futile, and pointless. I promise, it isn't.
😴 You ask yourself, would they be happier if I just skipped a bi weekly training sessions to let them rest?
🪮Brushing must be so uncomfortable on their old bones.
🗓️It's probably easier just to keep their routine.

Our senior pets naturally will have reduced exercise and less training. It's just so easy to let them be.

❤️Increase their circulation with a short grooming session or massage. (I groom 1/4 or 1/8 sections of their body to keep sessions short) Today W***y had a magnet massage on his shoulders and back.
🧠 Keep their minds sharp and their bodies mobile with a 3 minute training session. Step over broom handles though the hall. Learn a new trick. Trade up voice cues for hand signals.
🪇 Shake up their routine a little. Explore somewhere new. Bring new scents into a familiar environment. Have them hunt for a favourite item, person or snack.

If you don't do a little bit here and there, it is very likely you will have to do long sessions when it comes to real life situations like vet appointments, giving prescriptions, grooming, treatment of sores, or ailments, boarding or bringing them along on trips with you. However you decide to support your senior pet, I'm sending you lots of hugs, strength and of course wishing a little more 💰 comes your way to help with those extra costs too ❤️

Bringing you a little of our calm before the storm rolled in today (video on Instagram) Stay warm my lovelies.
⭐ 2 basement training games we play to prep for adventures when it's cold 🥶 as ❄️
1. Basement Blow up mattress. Grab a blow up mattress or floatie, put your Paddle Board or Kayak on it and hop in with your dog. (If they haven't been before, start with your boat on a stable surface) Let your pup jump out/off only after you say your release word and before they get concerned about the rockin and rolling. Boredom is best. Your dog should think the exercise is comfortable, but not too exciting. If you don't feel like dragging your boat out of the snowbank or garage toss a yoga mat over a piece of wood or thick cardboard then place the air mattress or even a couple seat cushions or yoga mats.
2. Get dressed and Hup up. Hold your dog's life jacket, harness or coat in one hand (by the collar piece so the neck opening is nice and wide). Ask your dog to target your other hand or a known object with their nose. They should have to stretch their nose and head through the collar piece of the equipment to reach their nose target. Once you have slipped the equipment over their head, give them their release word to play or get a good scratch.
Have them hop up to and off of furniture or over a rolled up yoga mat. Hold on to their equipment to support their hops. (Make sure you don't practice on slippery floors)
Share your pics and videos of your practice! I'm sure others would love to be inspired by the creativity!

Post a picture or share a story of your most independent or challenging dog. The challenge in training dogs that show independent behaviours is finding ways to make training challenging enough that the dog feels fulfilled. They somehow pull you into the rut of believing because your dog is independent, you should make rewards and training easier.
Handing over even the most delectable treat because we are so surprised Mr. Run Away actually wanted to hang out with us for half a second, well.. it leaves us feeling like that needy partner in a relationship.
Build games with your dog outside of the interesting environment before incorporating them into real life. Challenge your dog to push you for the toy, hunt for you in hidden places, chase you as you deke through obstacles, allow them to feel powerful in the capture. Channel your interest into the game, not bribing them to play with you. Genuinely make that reward you are using a true treasure. Soon your independent "stubborn" dog will treasure the time they get to spend with you.

3 random reasons you will regularly see me with a bag or vest packed with rewards.

1. Strangers can be very annoying. Rewarding the dogs when strangers annoy them makes it so they appreciate being in public 🤸
2. Random rewards keeps their trained behaviours sharp 🔪 🔥
3. Brothers are annoying. Signed Elsa.

Most days, I just don't want to chat, let alone with strangers.
A sweet person at the gas pumps asked how old my dog was. I politely answered, they complemented my dog and we both quietly continued emptying our wallets into our gas tanks.
I sighed and rolled my eyes internally. Here we go. Time to make some small talk.
I asked the stranger if they had dogs.
They gushed about their dogs, I connected back with questions and affirmations about the dogs and their personalities. It turns out that the stranger had lost a parent a few weeks earlier, the dogs are currently a huge part of getting through the grief.
Sometimes it helps that someone loves your dogs as much as you do.

🩷Make conversation with strangers, love dogs. Share our love of dogs.💜
