Regular health checkups are important!

This is Boo, the sweetest and calmest senior lady. She was rescued from a bad situation many, many years ago and came to her new family blind in her right eye with no further history or info.

Over the years her family diligently brought her for routine checkups and her eye was always stable until this year. Boo’s eye had developed proptosis(bulging) and bupthalmos (enlargement). A complete eye exam showed the pressures INSIDE her eye were elevated, which is painful 😣. While medications were started immediately, unfortunately Boo’s eye did not respond and the decision was made to enucleate (remove) the eye.

Despite her advanced age Boo handled the anesthesia and surgery well and she has healed great 👁️ 🐕 ✂️

This sweet girl, Landi, came to us for an ultrasound to investigate ongoing blood in her urine.

While blood in the urine can be as simple as a bladder infection, in Landi’s case we unfortunately found a large tumor growing on her right kidney.

With this diagnosis a number of options exist, ranging from referral for advanced imaging (ie CT scan) to oncology consultation, to surgical specialist referral, to palliative care.

In Landi’s case her owners opted to proceed with surgical removal of the kidney at Red Tree. Knowing that the mass was very large (~12x20cm), with an extensive blood supply and a tricky location (immediately adjacent to the abdominal aorta and vena cava), we had blood product on hand from a very generous Pyrenees named George 😍.

While she DID require a blood transfusion to compensate for extensive hemorrhage during tumor removal, Landi has recovered amazingly well and is doing great. Within a week of surgery she felt good enough to raid her family’s Easter baskets for candy and treats 😂.

This is Pip! This handsome guy got himself into QUITE a bit of trouble engaging in excessively enthusiastic breeding 😳🍆😬 .

Typically a drake (aka male duck)’s reproductive organ conveniently tucks right back into his feathers when he’s done with it.
But sadly in Pip’s case he developed a pr*****ed p***s. Once it’s stuck OUT it quickly becomes very swollen and painful and can even necrose and fall off.

Luckily for Pip his owner noticed something was amiss and brought him in; we were able to give sedation and pain meds and surgically replace his p***s where it should be.

Since he refused to let his owner medicate him, he spent a few days hanging out with us at Red Tree and was the quite the entertaining guy 😂.

Pip made a complete recovery and has returned to his lady ducks, hopefully having learned a lesson!
(**Though completely medically inaccurate we support parents using Pip’s story as a cautionary tale for all teenagers**)

This little lady, Riata, came to us when her owners noticed she wasn’t quite acting like her normal energetic self. On exam she was running a fever and her abdomen was a bit tender. Bloodwork showed significant inflammation, and on ultrasound it was seen to be coming from an enlarged, fluid filled uterus. A uterine infection (pyometra) was diagnosed, and she was taken to surgery.

Uterine infections are an emergency, as they can lead to sepsis and even death. Between 15 and 25% of unspayed female dogs will develop pyometra in their lifetime.

In the past it was standard to spay nearly all dogs at or before 6 months of age (if not a breeding dog), in part to prevent pyometras.

Today this is no longer as black and white; ongoing research suggests there are significant breed related differences and that early spaying could have a negative impact on joint development, urinary continence, and even certain types of cancers.

However, waiting to spay until later can mean a more complicated surgery with prolonged surgical healing times. The size difference between a 6 month old small breed dog’s uterus and that of a mature Rottweiler is significant, and so too is the surgical difficulty.
The decision to spay, and when, is a conversation best had with your vet.

Despite her abdomen being nearly taken over by her large pus-filled uterus little Riata bounced back from her surgery and is doing great 💗
