This is Penny, a 10.5 year old adorable Redbone Coonhound with a lifelong history of eating all things she shouldn’t.

Penny came in about a week after her family suspected they saw her chomp down a wooden bbq skewer 🍖

She was still happily eating and drinking, NOT vomiting, no diarrhea…she was just a bit tense in the abdomen and hunched up.

X-rays didn’t show any abnormalities and she did improve with some fluids and pain meds. But Penny’s owner knew something wasn’t right, and opted to take her for a CT scan.

Not only did Penny have a piece of skewer that punctured through her stomach and into her diaphragm, she ALSO had a mass on her liver 😱.

Penny underwent surgery with a specialist to remove the skewer and repair the damage, AND remove the liver growth (which turned out to be an abscessed benign nodule!).

Penny’s story has many lessons:
✔️Puppies aren’t the only ones to eat things they shouldn’t
✔️Owners know their dog best! If they feel something is off, they’re often right
✔️Some cases have more going on than we bargained for; without the skewer ingestion the liver abscess may not have been found until much later

Don’t let her sad panda eyes fool you- Penny’s back to her old self scrounging for things she shouldn’t and keeping her family on her toes 💙

(Tonsillar) foreign body Friday! As we move into autumn 🍂 and the weather stays dry we have seen many pups that have unfortunately had plant material stuck in their throats 🙁.

While foxtails are the worst culprit for this, the dog featured here loves to feast on all plant material indiscriminately 😂 and had a smorgasbord stuck in her tonsillar crypts/pouches.

If your dog wades into a dry patch of grass or foxtails before you can stop them, and begins persistently hacking, coughing, or swallowing painfully call us!

Once material is trapped in the tonsil region it can become infected or even abscessed if not removed.

This is Rango, possibly the worlds’s most loved barn cat. Until recently he held the important job of Head Mouser at a horse boarding and training facility.

Sadly for Rango he was injured on the job- he was found outside the barn limping on three legs, with his left hind dangling at an impossible angle 😭.

X-rays showed a complete tarsal luxation (dislocation), with an open fracture (bone sticking through the skin).

Despite what must have been excruciating pain, Rango continued to purr and make biscuits all through his exam 🥹.

His fracture was stabilized with a splint and he was started on pain meds and antibiotics until his surgery the following morning, when a mid-femoral amputation was successfully performed.

ALL the riders at the barn - adults and kids alike- were rooting for Rango. Red Tree has never had so many phone calls, well wishes, and donations for a patient before 🥰.

Rango’s all healed, and has been retired from the barn to the house where he has settled in to the pampered life without complaint 😂.

This dashing guy is Maverick, a French Bulldog who came to see us for chronic and severe infection on his hindend due to a malformation commonly called “corkscrew” tail.

Brachycephalic breeds are most affected by this condition, where the bones or vertebrae of the tail are malformed in such a way that they become ingrown, and curl back towards the dog’s body.

This creates a deep skin pocket around the tail which is very prone to infection, and causes extreme discomfort and pain for some dogs. If oral medicine and topical treatment fail, complete surgical amputation of the tail right at the body wall is considered.

The surgery can be complicated-the tissue is usually swollen and infected, the malformed tail is in very close proximity to the rectum and anus, and extreme care must be taken to avoid any spinal cord damage while removing the abnormal tail vertebrae.

Maverick pulled through surgery and healed like a champ (with a bonus cryptorchid neuter concurrently performed- but that can be another post for another time!)
