Meet your dog’s needs BEFORE asking them to “work” If a dogs mental and physical needs have not been met prior to training, they will have a harder time focusing & both dog and human will be a lot more frustrated! Part of good training is setting the dog up for success rather than failure. In this video, my focus was on loose-leash walking. If I had attempted training prior to the enrichment exercises (this was her first walk of the day), she would have been too distracted and excited by the environment to focus on walking next to me. Rather than correcting her “failures”, I set her up to succeed and end up being able to reward many more reps. This makes training fun for both of us! Note that my goal is not to have a dog that walks directly beside me & stares at me the whole time. A proper “heel” has its place but mostly I just want to have slack in the leash (I use different cues for a working “heel” & regular day-to-day walking). I’ve also been working on marking her when she looks AWAY from me while maintaining a loose-leash to encourage her to engage with the environment more. Winter enrichment challenge - Tuesday This one is one of my favourite puzzle toys because of how easy it is! ❄️Open up a regular/large sized towel ❄️ Place treats or kibble (I often do full meals) in a line across the length of the towel ❄️ After each line, roll the towel to cover the food. Repeat until the towel is fully rolled. ❄️ For an added challenge, tie the towel in a knot! Fear/aversion to collars & harnesses: I’ve been wanting to talk about this for a long time because it’s a VERY common issue that many people face. Often I’ll go over for a training session for a completely different issue and discover that a dog is fearful of their collar or harness. This typically presents in the form of avoidance behaviours (typically moving away) from the equipment but can also be more subtlety exhibited when the client brings the equipment out. Examples include (but are not limited to): - Leaning away from the equipment - Lip licking - Tense or lowered body - Lowered or pulled back ears - Whites of the eye showing (whale eye) - Tucked or lowered tail - Tension around the mouth or brow This should NOT be considered normal behaviour and steps should be taken to change the dogs emotional state from negative to positive in the presence of these items. Most dogs will choose to avoid conflict but could resort to biting if they feel trapped or cornered. Kenzo would disappear at the sight of his harness and his owners had to follow him around the house to eventually put it on to take him for a walk. In this video, the client is working with Kenzo to build his confidence around his harness and change his emotional state by pairing it with things he enjoys.
