Understanding your water flow is crucial when planning out your water harvesting amenities. Many of today’s homes have much more elaborate roof arrangements than in prior decades. After gaining an understanding of water volume from roof surface examination, and the downspouts associated with each, we can then plan our storage and harvesting capabilities accordingly. Often, it may even become necessary to rearrange downspouts and re-level eaves for more efficient water distribution, depending on the surrounding landscape and grow-zones.

Learning to use a transit level is a valuable experience, applicable in so many industries (not just permaculture😉), and is now another integral part of our PDC course!

So what does the yolk colour have to do with egg quality exactly?

Well, quite a lot actually! A pale yellow yolk is usually an indicator of a mainly grain-fed diet (wheat, corn, etc)—also often an indicator of caged hens. Moving toward a deeper yellow, orange or green is an indicator of a pasture-raised hen, with exposure to a much more omnivorous diet (the natural diet for poultry). If the yolks are more on the green side of things, this is a good sign the hens are getting out to roam freely in the pasture to forage fresh greens. If they are deep orange, the same applies, but likely have even more variety to choose from, including insects—also a natural part of their diet.

One caveat here: if buying eggs from an industrial farm, be aware some are using synthetic colorants in the feed—definitely not what we need in our diets!

Finally, my own personal theory, and another indicator of a high-quality egg: how sturdy is the shell? Is it tough to crack, or does it cave with the slightest pressure? If the shell is sturdy, to me this is an indication that the hen is consuming enough nutrients all around. If it’s a strong shell, chances are the hen can then afford to use more nutrients in the creation of the egg and yolk, and therefore, provide us with the highest-quality food we could ever want!

Putting the raised beds to sleep for the winter.. The use of leaves will help mitigate nutrient loss and evaporation, while acting as a safe haven for garden-friendly creatures. And yes, we’ve kept a couple of plants around for now that are frost resistant and still productive! 🌱😎🌱

Third Installation Phase of our conceptual design for Collingwood School in Calgary has been completed, thanks to the wonderful team at and …

Posted • The third phase of the naturalization area at Collingwood School is complete! Well, it was actually done in time for the start of school, but it’s a busy time 😬... Building upon the previous year’s installations, there’s a beautiful new memorial bench close to the dry creekbed, more trees to create a gathering area, a permanent fence around the food forest to protect the plants, and a new pad for bike racks. Kudos to the parent council volunteers and school for their hard work, for the original concept design, and of course for completing the installation!

Posted • The summer is flying by, where does the time go? Today we started the third phase of the naturalization area at Collingwood School with the amazing crew at to complete the installation, thanks to the hard work of the parent council volunteers and school admin to make this a reality. Here’s some photos of where there will be a new pad for bike racks, a permanent fence around the food forest, a memorial bench, and more trees. And some photos of the raised garden beds and labyrinth that were installed in 2022 and 2023 (looking great!). This project works with the original concept design completed by , building upon the design, and giving the students even more wonderful outdoor play and classroom space.

Homemade natural plant fertilizer, made with items found around the home! 🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱

Homemade plant fertilizer with everyday household items: -Eggshells (powdered) , mixed with coffee (let sit for a few days) -ground, dried banana peels -ground, dried comfrey Take one teaspoon of powdered eggshells and mix into a comió of coffee, letting sit for a few days. Then add 1 tablespoon of the banana pellets powder and 1 tablespoon of comfrey power. Mix all into a gallon sized watering can and water as needed! 🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱
