Simba is a great example of the average dental! Simba came in with grade 1 - 2 calculus and gingivitis and one tooth that we knew would need to come out. Upon x-ray it was obvious that the tooth in question had been almost entirely resorbed. What that means in Simba's case is that Dr. Shari crowned the tooth (removed the exposed portion of the tooth), and left the root. We crown the tooth to prevent any further discomfort. Over time the remaining fragments of the root will be completely resorbed and it will be as if there was never a tooth there!

We took Theo's teeth! Theo's dental exam showed grade 2 calculus and gingivitis as well as quite a few suspicious teeth. Before dental radiographs, there were 7 teeth that had the potential to need extraction. After the x-rays we were able to cut that number down to 3 needing extractions which were his 207, 307 and 409!

On top of teeth, we also removed some excess gum tissue around Theo's mouth. Why would we do that? Theo's gums were inflamed from his existing dental disease which caused an overgrowth of gum tissue covering more of the surface area of his teeth than typical. This extra gingiva leaves more hiding spaces for bacteria and tartar to accumulate and cause FORL's (feline "cavities").

Gingivitis and tartar = inflammation = excessive gingiva growth = bacteria and tartar build-up = cavities/feline oral resorptive lesions

Clementine needed a dental! On exam, Clementine had Grade 3 calculus and Grade 1-2 gingivitis. We use a scale of 0 - 3 when determining the severity of the gingivitis and calculus build-up. Luckily for Clementine, she didn't require any extractions! Since we caught and treated her dental concerns quickly, they did not have enough time to cause any gingival recession. Her x-rays showed no signs of tooth root resorption either, so she was able to leave the clinic with just as many teeth as she came in with!

Her recovery from the sedation involved lots of cuddles with Dr. Carly.

Regular dental cleanings, like Clementine's, can help prevent more serious dental concerns and lead to a happier and healthier life!

While your pet’s mouth may be free of signs of advanced dental disease such as loose or broken teeth and look relatively ‘normal’, the gunk on their teeth is just the tip of the dental iceberg. Often bad breath may be the only sign of an issue.

Dental disease that lurks under the gumline can compromise your pet’s overall health, comfort, longevity, quality of life, and the way they enjoy time with you. 🦷
