Today we want to thank Atlas for being a staple in our DH line up. The summer he arrived he struggled through extensive medical and dental appointments. A truly unwanted horse we worked diligently help him regain not only a healthy body but heal his mind and soul. Then came Alexis. She saw he was a diamond and she would sit with him during that summer. We thank her for being pivotal in helping him see humans as allies, not adversaries. Her love would open the door for many to have the honour of riding him.
A steady go to guy he earned his “more valuable than gold” standing when a young rider had a seizure and fell from his back. Atlas stood over her and nickered to get our attention, not moving a muscle but rather standing to protect her from harm.
He was an outlandish character…sometimes not wanting to turn left or right or back up. He would refuse with quiet but very firm resolve that he knew what the lesson of the day was. Most times not what we were teaching.
As time would go he would become more than we dreamed, taking riders in parades, highlight being the Stampede Parade.
So when a freak accident called him the the rainbow bridge, Bryanne made the courageous choice to end the pain. Holding him in her arms until the last breath it was a humans turn to hold steadfast over him, protecting him from harm and loving him as he loved all the humans at DH.

Why is indoor learning a unique and vital part of DH?
Because it’s COOL!!!! 😎
Where else could you make a clay hoof AND learn the functionality of the anatomy? You say this won’t make you a better rider? We disagree!! We think it makes you a superior rider and horse person!!!!

When Kevin and Bryanne met back in the 80’s there wasn’t any spoilers to where this life would take us. If you told us then that our lives would twist and turn like a tornado, droping us on 20 acres in the heart of Springbank running a family horseback riding business...we would’ve laughed till we cried.
But this is what life has done, that twister took us through childloss, financial crisis, mental and pysical health issues, nearly shattering our marriage. There were more times then we could count that we would dry out from one storm just to see clouds building. There were times when the violence of the storm was too much to battle so we would give in...but never really give in. I mean there was always something, one thing that kept us from being swept away, eachother.
Being part of a tight knit family, being connected to one another is what gets us through. We have spent the past decade on a total reverse of where we thought we would be. Take it from us, starting out after so many storms, being on our own without shelter and starting all over in our mid forties? TERRIFYING...but the BEST thing that we have ever done and we are never looking back.
Enter Discovering the Horse... Discovering, a pretty powerful word. When you think about discovering something what an endless possibility and together this crazy family is on mission. Together we have a unique map to surviving storms. We would never boast to be medical professionals, councellors and never claim to be therapists, but our story is a powerful one. We are survivors and our message is that through connection, change CAN happen. Together we have built programming where we have taken pieces of our lives and put them into the four pillars of our business that we have adapted from the genius of mentors. Josh Nichol talks about space, energy, pressure and mind in his horsemanship clinics. If you EVER get the chance to work with him...DO IT! Its those 4 areas that we thought...hey if this can work for the horses and in riders lives then it can work in EVERY aspect. We adopted them with thanks to Josh as our pillars and we operate under them.
With the help of our horses we are working to provide a connection based, riding facility that teaches the whole horse. From grooming to gaits our approach focuses on the trust that comes from moving forward in a slow fashion. Slow is fast, as one of our former teachers always said. The after effect of this is solid trust based relationships with horses that are suitable for beginner riders and seasoned equestrians. So we have a new path, a new direction and new purpose. As a family we are ready to step onto the path as guides for those who are seeking, as friends for those who need it and storytellers for those who’d like to listen.
