It’s common for cats to get Feline Odontoclastic Resorptive Lesions (FORL). This is where the dentin in one or multiple teeth begin to erode. It’s extremely painful. 😖 Signs that your cat could have a FORL are decreased energy and/or activity, change in appetite, drooling, bad breath and bleeding from the mouth. If your cat is exhibiting any of these signs, you should book them in for an exam.

Just another friendly reminder that we are finding ticks in Alberta on pets who DO NOT travel. Ticks become active in temperatures above 4 degrees Celsius. It’s important to provide your pet with tick prevention during the warmer months. If we’ve seen your pet for an exam within the last 12 months, we can prescribe the prevention without an exam.

This tick was found on a pet just outside of Edmonton.

He came in to have his Feline Leukemia vaccine boosted. Feline Leukemia is a virus that is transmitted between cats through saliva and nasal secretions. It can weaken your cats immune system making them susceptible to other diseases.

🐰 REMINDER: Leave that baby hare there! 🐰

16 baby prairie hares have come to our clinic in the last 3 days, many of which are not yet eating solid food. At this age they often don't do well in care.

Mother hares leave their young on their own for long periods of time. Baby hares all alone do not necessarily need to be rescued.

📞 Please give us a call on our Wildlife Hotline (403-946-2361) before rescuing any hares so we can help determine whether they need help!

A note from Lord Sunflower on Parasite Prevention😃

Parasite season is kicking into high gear! Make sure your pet has a complete protection plan that includes preventive medication. Some parasites in pets cause minimal to zero symptoms and only become noticeable when the infestation has become severe. A comprehensive check is the best way to diagnose your pet and get them the care they need.

Spots are filling up fast so don’t delay, book an appointment today.

Providing pet parasite prevention is just one part of a complete protection plan. Additional protective measures include:

😺Routine checks after being outside

🐶Keep your pet away from f***s of other animals and monitoring them when at the park

😺Clean your yard

🐶Avoid higher risk areas like tall grass

😺Don’t let your pet drink from still water or puddles

🐶Take your pet to the veterinarian for regular checkups

Now is not only an ideal moment to refresh your pet's parasite prevention treatment but also to book your pet’s annual exam, and pursue parasite screening (f***l test, heartworm and tick-borne disease blood test).

Want to know more about your pet’s health? Ask our team about extending your pet’s blood work to help evaluate their general health, ensuring they’re in tip-top shape for some summer fun.

Benefits of wellness testing include:

Provides a baseline of your pet’s health status
Detects early or hidden diseases before symptoms begin to show
Helps our team make a diagnosis and prepare a treatment plan

Lord Sunflower is such a good patient❤️ He has Hyperthyroidism so we check his blood and urine regularly for any changes and to ensure his medication is working properly. We collect urine using an ultrasound (black part on the ultrasound is Lord’s full bladder). To ensure the sample is sterile, we poke a needle in to the bladder for collection. This procedure is not painful for the patient and they hardly ever react. If they do, it’s usually because we have them lying on their back😃

Hyperthyroidism is caused by an increase in the bodies production of thyroid hormones. It’s most common in middle-age to older cats. Signs that your cat could be Hyperthyroid include weight loss despite an increased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, drinking more and in turn urinating more, poor hair coat and hyperactivity.

This is 1 of 2 ticks that was pulled off a dog in the SE Community of Mahogany. This dog never went further then its own backyard. Despite what people think, we definitely have ticks in Alberta and right here in Calgary.

Make sure to check your pets regularly! Call us any time to find out how you can get a monthly preventative for your pet!

These little guys are Ixodes Scapularis, also known as the Deer Tick. They carry and spread Lyme Disease. They are identifiable by the brown coloured shield on their back along with their elongated mouthparts.

They are active in temperatures above zero and reside in deadfall (not long grass!).

They are quite small and very hard to find on our furry friends. They tend to hide between paw pads, under armpits, at the base of the tail or on the face and in the ears.

If you find a tick on your pet or yourself, save it and bring it in to any Vet clinic. We can send them in to be tested for Lyme Disease.

The good news is, we can prescribe a preventative for your pet! Call us today to order yours🪳
