A small stab in the heart is what you feel when you put up the day's riding list and you see riders sinking heavily in their shoulders when reading which horse they are assigned for the lesson. A small stab in the heart for that horse that for an hour will carry around a rider who has already decided that he does not like his horse. A small stab in the heart for the horse that did not choose the rider himself but still does his best, lesson after lesson.

Riding is a privilege and something you have chosen to do. If you chose to ride at a riding school, your instructor assumes that you actually want to learn how to ride. The instructor's highest wish is that you get good at it.

Often there is a plan and a thought as to why you are assigned to that exact horse. Before you mount up next time, ask yourself "what can this horse teach me today?" All horses have something to give, a feeling or a new tool in the box.

The art is actually in being able to get a lazy horse to move forward, to get an uncertain horse to gain confidence, a naughty horse to focus or a tense horse to be released. It takes work. If you think a horse is boring, it's more likely that you don't ride the horse as well as you think! It's not easy to be confronted with your own shortcomings, but it is in that very situation that you get the chance to truly grow as a rider.

The excuse that "it's not my kind of horse" is actually a really bad excuse. A good rider can ride any kind of horse. A good rider has trained many hours on different types of horses to become a good rider. A good rider can find and manage the gold nuggets in every horse.

If we absolutely want to ride, it is our duty to strive to do it as best as possible, even if it's only for fun. We owe it to every horse that carries us upon it's back.

Copied and shared with love for all of our horses, ponies and riders 🐎❤🐎

We sent one of the best off to retirement today ❤️ Thank you Maia for coming into my life; over and over again. I always felt like we were supposed to be together and the universe showed us that it was always meant to be that way. Thank you for giving so many riders confidence, for showing them what it’s like to fly. Enjoy your pasture at your new home with the lady who introduced us 17 years ago 😘

Today we lost a soldier. A horse that came to us a few years ago; well into his 20’s, so weak looking, frail, so thin but still wanting life.

He was hard to look at, it broke your heart to see him so underweight…but he didn’t show any weakness.

He held his head high, he wanted to work. He wanted to show us he was fine, that he could do the job we originally went to buy him for; that age didn’t matter, health didn’t matter, if we wanted it - he would do it.

We fed him, loved him, believed in him the way he wanted us to. The odds were against him; but he blossomed. He became one of the most valuable players on our team.

I’m so happy your last years were years full of love. I hope you felt how special you were to us all.

I’ll miss the way you made my heart full when you would jump over a jump with all the scope in the world! Even at the ripe age of 25 (25, so we think..!)

You were even going to make your debut at a big time horse show this week. I know you would have knocked peoples socks off!

Charlie even in your darkest hour you were a shining light. So stoic, so kind. Kissing my hand trying to make me feel better. So selfless.

You never let your story before us define you.
We should all take a page from your book.

I’m happy you were surrounded by so much love today in your last moments, you deserve it all.
I will miss kissing your velvet nose sweet boy.
Thank you for everything, I love you.

Rest In Peace Charlie

The Best Horses in Heaven, They Have No Tail
by Miska Paget
The best horses in Heaven
they have no tail.
This is a rule they all know
without fail.
For when a new horse arrives
with a short cut bob,
they all know that this horse
did a very good job.
His owner could not bear
to part with her friend
so she saved his tail,
wrapped in ribbons
and in braids,
to hold with his memory
in a very loving way.
To enter Heaven
without a tail
is an honor,
a message,
that without fail
announces to everyone,
far and wide
that this horse
was more than a wonderful ride.
But
this horse was loved and cherished by one
and when his time serving on this Earth was done
he left behind
a broken heart
and a soul
from which he never will part.
