Animal control services for Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Kent, Harrison Hot Springs, and Mission. Our CARE Centre temporarily houses lost, stray and impounded dogs.

The Fraser Valley Regional District provides dog licensing, bylaw enforcement, and pound services to Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Kent, Harrison Hot Springs, and Mission. A limited aggressive dog service is provided to Electoral Areas D, E, and H. Our dedicated staff provides quality medical care, nutrition, socialization and exercise to the dogs in our care. Some of these dogs are waiting to be claimed by their owners, while others are being evaluated to determine their adoption needs.

***CALLOUT FOR FOSTERS** as you can see by checking our adoptable dogs album on Facebook, we are once again faced with an influx of adoptable dogs waiting for homes!! We are seeking qualified foster homes to help - either short term, long term, part time, or full time - let's get these dogs out of the shelter!! Foster homes allow these dogs time to decompress, and help to make them even more adoptable. The ideal foster home will differ for each dog and their particular needs. Summer time and vacations often means a drop in adoptions, and dogs staying in shelters longer. We are happy to work with potential adopters if they're wanting to adopt a dog but have an upcoming trip planned! We are located in Chilliwack BC. If you're looking for a quiet superstar, Atlas is your guy. Atlas is laid back, and a calm presence when he meets new dogs! He often is the first candidate to introduce "new recruits" to here at CARE! Atlas is believed to be a Kelpie cross and he's around 2-3 years old. He's very smart and extremely trainable, and he's also a total love bug, leaning in for pets at every opportunity! Quickly becoming a staff favorite, we're sure Atlas will make someone very happy. Darling Sheenah is still waiting for her furever home. Just over 7 months in shelter and she's hanging in there, but she really wishes for a home and a family of her own. Sheenah is about 6 years old so past the puppy stage. She spent some time in foster and we learned she has excellent house manners! Sheenah prefers to be the only dog, but can be tolerant of individual dogs with proper slow introductions. She can be vocal on leash when she sees other dogs, but responds well to positive reinforcement training and could make huge strides with a committed guardian! She is beautiful and extremely affectionate. Gentle and an absolute doll, she adores playing fetch and lives for the water. We always love getting happy updates from our adopters! Tika is living her best life, clearly! Her adopters shared this update: "We took her on her first camping trip this weekend, well “glamping” as we had a big air mattress and she had a nice elevated bed. Hiked Windy Joe (16kms) and she did great! As you can see by the last picture, she was pretty tired by the end of it that she fell asleep sitting up on the drive home 😊." This makes us so happy! What a lucky girl, Tika!

Another (cute!) new addition to our crew at CARE, this is Leland! Leland is a joyful fellow who loves nothing more than to play fetch and hang out for butt scratches. He's a young guy at around a year old, and appears to be a Lab x American Bulldog mix! Leland is a big guy at about 80 pounds but he thinks he could easily fit in your lap! Leland seems to love other dogs so he may be a good match for a home with another playful pup. While his history and kids is unknown, his size will be a consideration when determining his best match! Ready for a GLOW-UP?! Remember Eli, the nervous German Shepherd puppy who was found as a stray a few months ago?? Well we barely recognize him now - introducing CHARLIE - the beautiful grown up confident boy! Wow we sure are happy with this placement - how lucky that he's been nurtured in just the right way and has completely blossomed inside and out!! We're forever grateful to adopters like these 💙💙💙

Indiana Bones is back! His loving foster family gave him a real leg-up by spending lots of time working on his basic training, making him even MORE adoptable! Bones is a really sweet guy and a fantastic companion. He's learned to be comfortable in his crate for a couple of hours at a time and is a great guy to have around the house. Bones loves other dogs, although he doesn't have much of an "off switch" when it comes to play so he might do better as the only dog in a home, or with a great plan to manage shenanigans in the household! If you prefer stripes over spots, maybe Nola is your gal! Nola is a gorgeous female Pit Bull mix who's around 2 years old and weighs about 65lbs. She was found tied up and apparently abandoned, and thankfully CARE was called to the scene. Nola already has some basic training and knows some commands. She's working on leash skills and is very smart and responsive to training! Nola has done well with the dogs she has met thus far at CARE, and will be further evaluated with dogs once she is spayed next week! Nola seems to be potty trained and has a medium energy level, with no signs of separation anxiety. As we get to know about her we will be able to determine whether a home with kids may be a match. Brace yourself - adorable spotted bowling ball incoming!!! Cricket is aptly named as she loves to "boing" in between her zoomies and sploots! This cutie is a compact 40lb Pit Bull mix female (soon to be spayed). Cricket looks to be just shy of a year old and she is FULL OF BEANS!! She will be a super fun dog for an active home who's prepared to continue with her training, and to channel her joie de vivre! Cricket loves everybody but is still an excitable young pup so might jump up or use her teefs to get your attention - so while she's friendly, she might be a lot to manage around small kids! She seems to like the dogs she's met thus far at CARE, so she may be compatible with another dog that shares her enthusiasm for play and rough housing. We don't know her history around cats. Have you seen how cute Rayne is? With her slightly wonky ears and her endearing expression? Her eyes really say "why haven't I gone home yet?" We aren't sure girl, but we're trying! Rayne is "middle aged" and is just coming into her own. She seems like she may have led a life on a tether, and everything was new to her when she arrived at CARE. Rayne loves her people and will play fetch till the sun goes down! It may take a little adjustment for her to acclimate to living in a home, but we know it's worth it as she deserves to live the rest of her life in comfort and only knowing love. Meet Atlas! Atlas is a neutered male Kelpie mix who's looking for love! Atlas is believed to be 3-5 years old and he is a great size at just over 50lbs! Atlas is tolerant of other dogs but not interested in play, so may prefer a home as the only dog. His history around kids or cats is unknown. Atlas has a medium energy level and is very smart! A couple of walks and some brain games would make the perfect day for him. Atlas is not at all vocal, so he may be suitable for strata living! We thought it time to share an update on "Indiana Bones", who is still available for adoption! We (and he) are incredibly fortunate in that he's been staying in a foster home while we wait for his furever family to come along! Bones' foster notes that he's doing incredibly well and is a very well behaved boy over all! They reported that "He continues to be a great guy who’s got a whole lot going for him He is responding really well to training." Bones a young (under 2 years old) neutered male Doberman. Bones loves other dogs, although he does like to play pretty intensely, so would need a canine companion who appreciates his enthusiasm! Have you renewed your dog licence for 2024? If not, this means you have an outstanding balance on your dog licence account.

Starting this week email and phone call reminders are going out. Licensing is mandatory and helps us reunite you with your dog in the unexpected event it becomes lost. The owner of any unlicenced dog is subject to a $200 fine.

It is important to also let us know if you:
• have moved
• no longer have a dog
• need to update the spay or neuter status
• or have lost your licence tag
• have a new dog that needs a licence

Which also means he needs extra direction to channel all his energy positively! Whatever lucky person invests their time in Murdoch will see a huge payoff when he's mature! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a... Field Spaniel? Odie flew into our lives and is taking the world by storm! Okay, it was a bit of a slower process because he was pretty nervous when he got here, but Odie is coming out of his shell now! Odie is a male (about to be neutered) who we believe to be a Field Spaniel. He is estimated to be around 2 years old, and we think he'll mature under 35-40lbs. Odie is athletic and beautiful and he has long flowing locks (mostly on his ears!). Odie seems social with other dogs so me may be suited to a home with another dog. Because he can be a little unsure, he's looking for a home with no children. Odie's history with cats is unknown. He's working on the basics like "sit" and will need a patient guardian with some experience as he seems to have had little to no training (and he likes to lift his leg, hopefully his neuter will help with that eventually!). Astra can't believe she hasn't been adopted yet! A spayed female Husky x who will be medium sized when full grown, short hair, and beautiful blue eyes - what more could you want?! Astra is around 6 months old and her favorite hobbies include playing with people, toys, and other dogs - and running through puddles! Astra is smart and outgoing. She's confident and looking for adventure! Astra could live in just about any home so long as she's provided the right opportunities for learning, exercise and continued socialization! Meet Stanley! The lovable hunk who will wiggle his way into your heart! Stanley is a neutered male 3.5 year old Boxer mix, believed to be crossed with Rottweiler or Mastiff. He's a very sweet and playful guy who weighs about 100 pounds (and has a bit to lose!). Stanley enjoys playing with toys and socializing with his people, end especially likes butt scratches! Stanley isn't sure that he wants any doggy friends, but he seems tolerant of them from a distance. He'd love to find a doggy bed to call his own, and a home that can offer him a couple of walks a day. Stanley knows some basic commands and we think he'll be an amazing companion for someone looking for a moderate-energy pup. Stanley's history around cats is unknown. Meet Rayne! Rayne is a spayed female German Shepherd cross. She was found as a stray and came to CARE. Rayne is a sweet girl who absolutely loves to play fetch. She is learning commands like sit, wait, and paw and seems to pick things up very quickly, as she is highly motivated by either toys or treats! Rayne is estimated to be 5-7 years old, and sadly we believe she may have lived primarily outdoors and/or have been tied up for some portion of her life. She is looking for a second lease on life, and to find a home that can provide patience and positive reinforcement as she learns all the ropes of being a happy, indoor dog. She can be a little anxious at times, but we're sure that with time and patience she will adjust to her new home as she begins to trust that she will have stability and a place to call her own. Rayne has not shown reactivity around other dogs, but she prefers not to have them in her space, so she's looking for a home as the only pet. Murdoch also figured out that swimming is pretty fun! Murdoch went into a foster trial last week but it turned out it just wasn't the right match - fair enough! What we did learn is that this guy (who's around 9-10 months old) doesn't know a lot about the world or regular household items like - gasp - dishwashers!!! He'd love to find a knowledgeable home that can work to help him gain confidence with new situations; the good news is he LOVES people and quickly wants to be your best friend! He has a lot of energy and hopes to find an avenue to exercise his little brain as well as his body. Interested in learning more? Email [email protected]!
