We'd like to wish Mikaela, one of our very skilled and compassionate registered veterinary technicians, a happy 3rd work anniversary!!! Mikaela has officially been a valuable and dedicated member of our team since 2021 but we were first impressed by her compassion and care in 2016 as a summer student and we watched her skills grow in 2018 when she came for her practicum as part of her RVT Program. When she applied for a position on our team of course we were delighted to welcome her back. She's been a real asset ever since!

Whether you’re planning a poolside staycation or day at the beach, pets (like people) can suffer from hypothermia in cold water. Rule of thumb: If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your pet.

Ticks do carry some diseases that significantly affect cats, with the main two being Hemobartonella and Anaplasmosis. Lyme disease has been experimentally induced in cats as well, with symptoms similar to dogs (fever, lameness, stiffness, lethargy, etc.). The best way to protect your cats against ALL of the different tick-borne diseases is to use a monthly feline-specific tick preventive year round.

In South West Nova EVERY season is tick season! Ticks are active when it is 4 degrees Celsius or warmer. The photo below highlights in red all of the days within Nova Scotia from November 2023 to February 2024 when ticks were out and about and active. Unfortunately they do not "die off" in the winter. This is why we recommend a monthly tick preventive all year round for your pets.

May is Lyme disease awareness month. The Deer Ticks in South-West Nova often carry the bacteria for two different illnesses, Lyme Disease and Anaplasmosis. At Evangeline Animal Hospital we see patients positive for either disease (and sometimes both!) on an almost daily basis! The best prevention is using a monthly tick preventive year-round.
