Today is National Check the Chip Day!

We invite you to take time today to:
1. Learn more about the importance of microchipping your pet.
2. If your pet is already microchipped then please ensure that the microchip is registered AND up to date with your most recent contact information.

You should update your pets’ microchip contact details every time you move, change phone numbers and your email address.

Current contact information = higher chance you will be reunited with your pet in the event they ever go missing. An unregistered microchip or one with old contact info is essentially useless!!!

Updating microchip contact information is unfortunately often forgotten which is why August 15th Check the Chip day was established; a day to remind pet parents not to miss this important step and to do the necessary contact updates if needed.
- Don’t know if your pet has a microchip or what the microchip number is? At the clinic we can easily and quickly scan your pet for you.
- Do you know the microchip number but not the manufacturer/ company it is registered with? Please visit petmicrochiplookup.org This website will tell you which microchip company to contact in order to update your information!
- Need help or have further questions? Contact us at 403-981-1515.

Miss Henry, the perfect patient, should seriously teach a masterclass on how to behave for a nail trim!

Henry’s guide to getting a Pawdicure:
Step 1: Walk happily to the treatment area.
Step 2: Assume the position without being asked: lay down in lateral.
Step 3: Give a paw to your pawdicurist and let them trim the nails while you lay calmly. (Repeat for all paws).
Step 4: Celebrate your job well done, receive your cookies and join your owner!
🐾🐾🐾

Our team of course understands not all pets are fans of nail trims. We are happy to trim your pets nails and will work with them to make it as stress free as possible. 🧘‍♀️ 🦴 💅🐾

Happy Earth Day! 🌎

🐾 Let’s paws 🐾to appreciate the beauty and everything our earth offers.

At Sunset Ridge Vet Clinic we try to do what we can to protect our planet’s precious creatures and their habitats!

A few ways we try to take care of our planet: going paperless, recycling, properly disposing of hazardous waste, powering down diagnostic machines/other electronics, and using hand towels and cleaning cloths instead of paper towels.

Also did you know that if you return your empty Royal Canin kibble bags to our clinic we will send them to be recycled via TerraCycle? (Unfortunately pet food bags can’t go in your blue bin!)

Week 2 of Pet Dental Month- FACTS!
Regular dental care not only increases the quality of your pet’s life, it can also increase their lifespan and save you money in the long run.

In the absence of daily teeth brushing, plaque rapidly builds up within hours after eating and then within a couple days it turns to tartar or calculus which can no longer be removed by a tooth brush! Tartar leads to bacteria growth, causing halitosis (bad breath) and gingivitis (red inflamed gums). Then gingivitis can turn into periodontal disease, which if you recall from last week is the top dental condition affecting dogs and cats. By just age 3 the majority of cats and dogs have periodontal disease!!!

Oral bacteria can have systemic effects as it can travel through the bloodstream and negatively affect the heart, liver and kidneys!

Stay tuned for dental disease prevention tips and what is involved in a cat or dog dental procedure.

We’re starting off dental month with the dental conditions that affect our canine and feline friends the most and what signs indicate a dental issue. Dog and cat breath is not normal!

Periodontal disease- inflammation of the tooth’s supporting tissues and structures, the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. Caused by bacteria then plaque, which if left untreated leads to gingivitis, gum loss, bone loss and eventually tooth loss.

Gingivitis- inflammation, seen as redness and swelling, of the gums. Typically the start of periodontal disease.

Benign oral neoplasia- non-cancerous tumour of the mouth, such as an overgrowth of gum tissue.

Tooth resorption- a common painful condition in cats where the dentin (below the tooth enamel) erodes, the entire tooth from root to crown can decay from the inside out. Is your cat drooling, dropping food or only eating on one side? It could be tooth resorption.

Deciduous teeth (and complications thereof)- deciduous teeth are puppy/baby teeth which usually are replaced by adult teeth by 6 months of age. Deciduous teeth can be retained or persistent meaning that they are still present when the adult teeth have erupted. This can cause the adult tooth to erupt in an abnormal position, cause overcrowding of the mouth and result in an abnormal bite. These retained deciduous teeth often require extraction.

Ulcerative stomatitis- painful ulcerative lesions in the mouth, often caused by an abnormal immune response to plaque bacteria. Much more extensive than gingivitis.
