Record 216 wild horses captured this year in Alberta

The call to action to save these horses from decimation by the Alberta government is urgent!

A record number of feral horses were captured in Alberta this year — a sevenfold increase from the average — and many are slaughtered for their meat, said the president of the Wild Horses of Alberta Society.

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
Martin Luther King

Be the voice for those who do not have one. We have been born with the gift of voice. It is our choice how we use it. What most breaks your heart? What do you avoid thinking about because it is so painful? Search your heart and find a way to bring your voice to this cause. By speaking for those who can not we bring light to the world and support the right to freedom for all living beings. I choose to use my voice for horses, farmed animals and all creatures great and small. Who or what will you empower with your voice? Choose to make a difference in the world!

LIBERTY: the power of choosing, thinking and acting for oneself; freedom from control or restriction; (Collins)

Liberty is a word used frequently in Natural Horsemanship. I think it is important for us to be aware of the true dynamics underlying how we relate to our horses and to see how the language we use may actually involve complicity with an underlying dominance-submission model. Do horses being trained "at liberty" actually have "the power of choosing, thinking and acting for themselves"? By definition, training ("to control or guide towards a specific goal"; Collins) involves a human-determined endpoint and measures to manipulate the horse to reach that endpoint. Even if the horse has no halter, lead rope or any other tack on, does what we have been led to view as "at Liberty" by the Natural Horsemanship industry truly involve freedom of choice for the horse?

Please give some thought to this. I encourage you to examine the language you use in relating to your horses to ensure that you are coming from a place of integrity and not collusion with a culture that continues to dominate horses, but uses terms that suggest otherwise. © (The above material is protected by copyright)

The Art of HORSE LISTENING

Equi-Essence and Spirit of The Red Horse will be offering our new series of workshops starting this spring. There has been much focus over the last few years on becoming a horse whisperer. My journey has taken me on a different path, that of "Horse Listener". There is so much we can learn from and about horses by entering reverent silence and really listening with our ears, hearts, minds and souls to their whispers. This is both a very practical and a mystical journey which opens the door to true freedom for Equus. This is not another training method, in fact it does not involve training at all. Rather it focuses on the beauty and wonderment of truly letting horses be horses. It involves letting go of everything you ever thought you knew about horses and opening up to becoming a student apprentice of the horse. It is a life long journey where horses are honoured as the only experts on their species. It is about opening to a new way of seeing and being with horses, that ultimately brings freedom of spirit to both horse and human. "The Art of Horse Listening" nurtures kinship with horses that does not involve dominance-submission or using horses for our pleasure, work, entertainment, etc. It inspires us to embrace our place within the great web of life and honour all creatures great and small.

"The Art of Horse Listening" is dedicated to our vision of bringing freedom to all horses everywhere through what we are calling "The FREE SPIRIT HORSES MOVEMENT".

Please check back for information on workshop dates.

Lucy is leaving tomorrow:

Sadly, it turns out that Lucy has severe bilateral cataracts with uveitis. It is likely that they are congenital. She has been started on dexamethasone to decrease the inflammation of the uveitis. She likely had a recent worsening of her vision, which would explain her anxious behaviour. I have made the difficult decision to move Lucy to a new home to live with a 40 yo mule named Sadie. Sadie needs a friend and Lucy needs a seeing-eye equine. Sadie will have a bell around her neck to help Lucy know where she is. Hopefully, they will become best buddies. No one in this herd seemed to fit the role. Also, the fencing here is all electric, which Lucy just runs through when she gets agitated. This results in a blind mule running around in 40 acres of forest, which just isn't safe for her. I'm very sad to see her go, but I think it is the best decision for her wellbeing. Please send blessings and prayers for Lucy :)

LUCY update:

The vet is coming to see Lucy the molly mule this afternoon. She is partially blind, the reason for which is uncertain. The two possibilities that were suggested when she arrived 3 months ago were either trauma to the poll or as a result of severe emaciation. The woman that had her in North Carolina claimed she couldn't get weight on her, which is bizarre because I have actually had to start watching her portions and it's winter. Lucy has been behaving in an increasingly anxious, spooky way over the past month or so, which doesn't seem to make sense and I want to make sure we're not missing something medical. I will give an update later today.

Please "Like" our new "Spirit of The Red Horse Sanctuary" page to follow the developments as we expand the sanctuary and create new programs, including the "Free Spirit Horses" movement and our "Compassionate Living Centre". In the next several days I will feature one of the horses, donkeys or cows of the "Spirit of The Red Horse" herd. We are also looking for board members to apply for non-profit status, as well as individuals interested in being program directors for our various initiatives. We are not ready yet for on-the-ground volunteers, but that will be coming soon.

Sgt Reckless - Korean War Horse Hero

It never ceases to amaze me how much the horse has given to mankind. What an amazing little mare. Hopefully, one day our species will fully realize the graciousness of Equus through history and give back freedom of spirit to all horses, donkeys and mules!

Ganu and I just got back from his first experience at night in the forest. We spent a couple of hours out with the herd in the darkness. It was so peaceful and calm with very few mosquitoes. He enjoys our little adventures, especially when he gets a chance to mingle with his herd.

I just had the most ridiculous experience. I looked out the window and saw Juno pick up a little green ceramic caterpillar in his mouth. I was concerned that he might accidentally bite it's head off and cut his mouth. So there I was chasing Juno around the yard with a ceramic lawn ornament sticking out of his mouth. He finally ditched it in the trees and took off. Horses….you've got to love them!!
