Wild rabbits’ nails stay short from all the digging and hopping over rocks and hard surfaces but for our PET rabbits there is often nothing to wear the nails down. This means the nails need to be clipped regularly.

If a rabbit’s nails get long, it changes the angle at which it puts its feet down. This may not sound like a big concern but it is very important as it can add extra wear on the joints because they are moving in an unnatural way.

Long nails can get snagged easily and can be torn, sometimes right out of the nail bed. This is of course extremely painful, and there can be a surprising amount of bleeding. It can also result in dislocation or breaking of the toes.

If our rabbits’ hind feet don’t sit at the proper angle, weight is forced back onto their heels and that can lead to sore hocks, also known as pododermatitis. This is a serious condition and very hard to treat. Prevention is most definitely better than cure.

Does your cat have abnormal thick claws?

Cat nails are different than dog nails. The cat claw "sheds", usually by a cat scratching on something to remove the old sheath so the "new" claw underneath will be nice and sharp.

Cats don't actually "sharpen" their nails, they are just removing the old sheath that’s on top of the new nail like a cover. On the back feet, the cat will usually chew the old sheath off. This is why you will often see a cat chewing on their nails.

Older cats are more prone to getting the thick heavy nails because they don't scratch the old sheaths off like they did when they were younger, or chew them off because they have become over weight, less flexible or lazy.

When trimming these thick nails it's important to peal off some of the built up of the outer sheath, finding the sharper "new" nail underneath and trimming them.

The importance of keeping your dogs nails trimmed!

Long nails not only look unattractive, but over time they can do serious damage to your dog (not to mention your floors). When nails are so long that they constantly touch the ground, they exert force back into the nail bed, creating pain for the dog and pressure on the toe joint. Long term, this can actually realign the joints of the foreleg and make the foot looked flattened and splayed.

Again, this isn’t just an aesthetic problem, it’s a functional one: Compromising your dog’s weight distribution and natural alignment can leave them more susceptible to injuries, and make walking and running difficult and painful. This is especially important in older dogs, whose posture can be dramatically improved by cutting back neglected nails.

In extreme cases, overgrown nails and declaws can curve and grow into the pad of the foot. Long nails can get torn or split, which is very painful and, depending on severity, may need to be treated by a veterinarian.

If you have no AC for when this heatwave hits, don’t sweat it 😜 Heres a little trick l know to keep you and your furbabies nice and cool.

Take a mop bucket and fill it with ice and put water in it , place a fan behind and just above the bucket , you'll stay nice and cool. I've done this many times over the years and it works great 😉

If you have any neat tricks to stay cool during a heatwave for us folks who don’t have AC please share 😀

Know the signs 🔥

With summer right around the corner, knowing the signs of heatstroke in your pet is important. Take a look at the most common signs. Be sure to never submerge your pet in cold water if you think they are suffering from heatstroke, it’s best to cool them down gradually while you contact your veterinarian or nearest emergency hospital.
