Igor is loving his new life getting to do cool new things, like exploring new fields and seeing wildlife! (And cows of course) When he sees cows it absolutely melts my heart when he whinnies to them 🥹❤️ **ts

Igor learned how to load today!! What a brave young soul. To go into a dark trailer from out in the sun from bright to dark speaks volumes about him! And to back out keeping his composure (not with grace mind you) is incredible. What a cool horse! He will do almost ANYTHING for dandelions 😂

Thank you JP Forget for the use of your trailer today!!!

WHTC:

The second trainer featured in the Wild Horse Trainers Challenge is Morgan Haryett of MH Horsemanship and C**t Starting. Morgan chose Igor, a 2-3 year old gelding. While in our care at WHOAS, Igor displayed a friendly disposition, loves people, attention and playing with his herd mates.

You can follow the partnership journey between Morgan and Igor on her page at MH Horsemanship and C**t Starting

MH Horsemanship & C**t Starting is PROUD to introduce, “Igor”!

Igor is a 3 year old mustang gelding that I’ve chosen out of a great group of horses for the 2024 Alberta Wild Horse Trainers Challenge! I’m so excited to get working with this bold and naturally friendly gelding. My mission is to help bring him to his full potential and to find a loving family to adopt him in three months time! This guys future is so bright!

Big shout out to the Wild Horses of Alberta Society for getting these horses friendly, haltered and leading already setting them up for success!

I love it when a c**t goes from the reactive side of his brain to the thinking side by the end of the session. Their head and neck position tells you a lot about their state of mind. Such good progress with this c**t today! **tstarting **ts **tstarting

Worried about the Topgun sale prices this weekend? How about snagging this gelding to cushion the blow when your wife asks you how much you spent

Clyde is a 7 year old Clydesdale QH cross gelding standing roughly 15.2hh with lots of bone and good feet. This gelding is GREEN broke and needs an experienced rider that can give him a job and put miles on him. He is walk trot lope, leg yields, side pass, turn arounds and has reverse.

Clyde leads loads clips and baths nicely, walks over obstacles.

Clyde's ideal partner should possess a certain level of confidence and finesse, as he tends to be a tad skittish around human movement. Fear not, though, as Clyde is no runaway train—never has he bucked or engaged in any shenanigans of the sort. Think of him as a spirited companion in need of a seasoned leader to guide him along the right path. I kept the skiddish parts he does in the video so you can see in the beginning. He does settle into the ride after the first minute.

He is the type of gelding that needs a leader that is confident that can point him in the right direction and get the job done. He has a good handle under saddle and is learning how to accept his new life more and more every day!

He is located at Spur West Event Center, Rocky Mountain House. Viewings are available anytime if pre booked.

High four figures.

This is a one person type horse so when he gets to know you and he trusts you, you’ll be a great team!

I hope everybody’s 2 year old c**t starting season is going good!

This is where I like to see a c**t within the first five rides, forward without resistance and thinking about the stop. Focusing on the forward, with a healthy balance of stop and relax. The more you lope a c**t and get their feet moving the more you’re setting them up for success in the long run. You cannot train a horse without the forward, and as long as they are loping they are safe at this early stage.

01/08/2024

Why do I let my c**ts run a couple of times a week before I ride them? During their training, they're being asked to do a lot, learn a lot, and try and stay focused, so it's beneficial to allow them to run around and let them be a horse. This helps release any pent-up energy before I ride, enabling me to make each session as positive and productive as possible with a focused mindset. Instead of trying to direct all that pent-up energy during the ride, allowing them to release their excess energy beforehand helps ensure a more positive and focused ride. I love how my horses know the difference between playtime, and when they have a job to do ❤️

Should you train your horse with spurs? My answer is absolutely!! This is something I will always be stubborn about and never change my mind on. My spurs never leave my boots. Every horse, every discipline, they are your greatest artificial aid. Why? Because horses can lean on your bare heel all day long. You can squeeze and squeeze and bunt and bunt until your legs go numb and fall off. With spurs, you’re able to lightly press with your leg, then spur, and if they don’t respond you can lean into it a little bit more and if they still don’t respond, you’re able to roll it up their side to get some sort of thought and response. You’re able to ask, and then tell instead of nagging your horse with your bare heels to the point he gets pi**ed off and gets cranky and more often than not, doesn’t want to move forward anymore because they know you don’t have any leg strength and aren’t serious.

Now I’m not saying you have to wear spurs to ride your horse. But to train, it’s a really good idea to have them as an artificial aid as long as you’re a balanced rider and don’t have to rely on your legs to cling for balance, or you don’t have complete control of your legs and accidentally harpoon the horse because both could be a potential wreck if you’re not on a broke horse.

The photo below I’m using my spurs to help encourage the horse to lift his ribcage and back, and push his hip up and to the left off that right spur in prep for the left lead departure. You can see that there is a muscle that you can hold with your spur. It’s called their outer abdominal oblique and it’s in a really good place to be able to hold your spur steady in one spot so it doesn’t accidentally roll upwards, especially when you are learning how to use them correctly.

“Hot Sugar Hickory” AKA Harley after two months of reining body control and applying it to pattern work. Zero steering around the pattern and she’s starting to pick up speed on her own! What a cool mare. I can’t wait to see Dionne run her in the future!! I love how this mare turns on her own and is starting to know her job ❤️

Working now on her body position in between first and second, I do a quick correction and then leave her alone to turn, she is so smart and athletic she does such a good job setting herself up for her maximum athleticism.

Happy Friday! I wanted to do a “feel good about yourself” post. More often than not when we are riding or working with horses we focus on what we as horsemen need to work on, and we commonly forget to focus on the things that we ARE great at! And be selfish and brag a little bit!! What is the one thing nobody can do with horses like you can??

So I want you to all comment what your biggest strength is with your horse or horses. Maybe you’re able to get a horse to pick up their feet really well, get a really nice sidepass on a c**t, get a really nice stop with just your seat etc.

I’ll go first!! The one thing I am really good at are walk to lope departures ❤️

Oooooh La La!!!! Tall dark and handsome!

Meet my client horse Jasper!

2020 chestnut grade gelding standing 15.2hh, this 3 year old will steal your heart. With a sound body, sound mind, this gelding will win you over with one look into his big beautiful eyes! He is quiet, highly trainable, and has been exposed to trails, arenas, box stalls, ponying yearlings, whip sounds, ropes, tarps, obstacle days, gymkhanas, cows, you name it! He is very willing no matter what you throw at him. Jasper is good to catch, great with the farrier, baths, clips, lunges, crossties and loads well.

Jasper has had the right start, is up to date on farrier, deworming, chiro, and is super soft in the bridle, and soft in his body off of your leg. He walks, jogs, and lopes nicely with cadence to his feet, has a nice stop and doesn’t push on your hands, has a soft back-up, counterbends, side passes, leg yields, and has nice turn arounds. He even lets you swing on him to go ba****ck and bridleless! This was his first time dropping the bridle and saddle. He was amazing! He is priced at fifteen thousand.

You can crack a whip off of this guy and he doesn’t bat an eye. I will post the video in the comments. He was started lightly as a two year old for one month and then left to grow for a year and has been back in training for the last two months. He has been the go to horse for trail rides, and loves to be in the lead. He walks out beautifully and covers ground. He is great if you just want a horse to ride on a whim and don’t want to do arena work all of the time. He can be left for weeks on end and you can just catch him, cinch him and away you go.

The reason the owner is selling Jasper is that he has grown too tall for her. So it’s hardly a fault of his own, as he can’t help that he’s big and beautiful!

Full videos are available upon request, and viewings are available as well. He is boarded at Spur West Event Center near Rocky Mountain House, AB. Please message me to book a meet and greet with Jasper!

The price is in the ad for serious buyers. Videos and photos will be posted in the comments of my original post.

Big thanks to JP Forget for coaching me throughout Benz first show! And the behind the scenes, the two years leading up to it!

He is such a rockstar for where he is at in training, I couldn’t be more proud of this horse. He has such a big future ahead of him, and I’m excited to see where he can take me. He is so talented, athletic and has such a great mind. He truly is the full package!

One step closer to the 2023 Futurity!!!

He will be in the show pen tomorrow before noon. Nothing fancy except for loping through the pattern, just getting him in the show scene so I can make him one step closer to being broke!

05/27/2023

One of the things I look for in a horse when buying, is whorl placement. These tell me who a horse is and how soft a horse can be and how they are going to carry themselves naturally.

Now, having said this, I come from a strictly training perspective. I’m not talking how they behave in a field on their own with their own “personality” but once I start to work with them and ask them to do things and start applying the pressure of training. Some say it’s not true, some say it is, but the ones who are so close minded about it are typically not trainers and haven’t started hundreds of c**ts while keeping records of the different types of face whorls that go along with each horse.

The main ones I look for when buying project horses are a single center face whorl located relatively even between their eyes, two poll whorls, and even flank whorls that start right at their flank and travel up.

** A good rule of thumb, the weirder the whorl the weirder the horse. **

As you can see Legend From Heaven has one single whorl in the center of his face, with a lot of space between his eyes indicating a smart, trainable, level headed horse. Two poll whorls, indicating that he will break at the poll easily and be a super soft horse evenly both left and right while in training. Low flank whorls, indicating he will be able to get both hind feet under himself and become round driving with his hind end underneath him more easily vs a horse that has flank whorls starting halfway up their flanks. These horses tend to travel more strung out.

If a horse has neck whorls half way up their neck they tend to be more stiff laterally side to side in their face and neck.

And as for face whorls, there are so many different ones so if you are looking at buying a horse to start training, be mindful of these. They go along with the general face shape, and shape and size of a horses eye. You can always tell who a horse is just by a face photo

When you sensitize a horse (lunging, round pen, free time in the arena) make sure you always go back and desensitize with the same tool (stick and string, lunge whip, flag) that you made them move their feet with. This way you will always ensure a balance between sensitizing and desensitizing. If you only sensitize, you will end up over time with a spooky, sensitive, over reactive horse. Make sure you desensitize right after to keep your horse thinking and level headed, and remember to wait until they stand and relax before you take away the pressure. Have a good week everybody!

How has this mare not found her forever home yet?!

Rio Brava aka “Lennon”
16hh 2020 bay roan reg. CWB mare

This big beautiful 3yr old mare is incredibly special. I raised and handled Lennon from the day she was born, but it’s time for her to go on and do great things. With a young baby and one broke horse, I just don’t have the time she deserves.

Lennon has been professionally started this spring and is doing incredibly well under saddle in such a short amount of time. She shows a lot of natural talent and will make an impressive show partner. Lennon has been put through the chute to check her natural approach to fences and she did not disappoint! This mare has also proven herself to be quite lovely under saddle and is already moving into the bridle, responding to leg aids, and working on carrying herself through transitions. While she’s bred to jump the moon, she shows promise as a dressage prospect as well! She not only has beauty, but brains too!

Lennon is UTD on vaccinations, deworming, farrier, and dentistry. She is easy to catch, load, haul, bath, and tack.

She is available for viewing near Rocky Mountain House, AB until the end of May.

**Motivated to sell while she is there as she will be turned out to pasture and let grow once she comes home. Because of this, I am open to partial trades if it means Lennon ends up in the home she is meant to be in. She is one special girl and I absolutely adore her!
