1. Cats Age Much More Rapidly Than Humans.
A cat reaches the approximate human age of 15 by his first birthday and then the approximate human age of 24 by his second birthday. Each year after, your cat ages roughly 4 ā€œcat yearsā€ for every calendar year. Annual veterinary care is crucial because a lot can happen in a ā€œcat year.ā€

2. Cats Are Masters at Hiding Illness.
Cats are excellent at hiding signs that they are sick or in pain. Your cat could develop a health condition before you notice anything is wrong. Veterinarians are trained to spot changes or abnormalities and detect many problems before they advance or become more difficult to treat.

3. Your Cat May Be Overweight.
Over 50% of cats are overweight or obese. Your veterinarian will check your catā€™s weight at each visit and provide nutritional and enrichment recommendations to help keep your cat at an ideal weight. Just an extra three pounds can put your cat at risk for diabetes; respiratory, heart, kidney disease, and more.

4. Uncover Hidden Issues
Get to know your cat's behavior and let your vet know about any behavior changes. Has anything changed with your catā€™s eating patterns? Activity level? Make a list of information, concerns, and questions to share at your cat's annual check-up. You may not recognize some behavior changes as being significant because they are subtle or minor, but when your veterinarian takes a thorough patient history, these subtle changes may help to uncover hidden issues.

5. Kittens have 26 teeth, Adult cats have 30
That equals a lot of dental care! Periodontal disease is considered the most common disease in cats three years of age and older. Often there arenā€™t any obvious signs of dental disease. Most cats with dental disease still eat without a noticeable change in appetite. Discuss your catā€™s teeth at their annual check-up.

6. Preventative Care is better than Reactive Care
During a regular check-up you share information with your veterinarian about how your cat behaves at home. This history along with a thorough physical examination, allows you and your veterinarian to create a plan to help your cat remain healthy. Regular check-ups can help avoid medical emergencies by detecting conditions or diseases before they become significant, painful, or more costly to treat.

On July 22nd, 2024, the CDC released another statement with changes to the travel requirements for dogs entering the United States.

As of August 1, 2024 [at 12:00am ET], dogs that have spent the prior six months only in low-risk rabies countries can enter the US with an online submission receipt from the CDC Import Form as acceptable documentation. (see below)

https://cdc-786687.workflowcloud.com/forms/fb112553-dd9a-4c3e-a75f-12d6b7e2f2a4

This form can be filled out on the day of travel and the receipt can be shown to airlines and border officials as a printed copy or by phone. The receipt will be good for travel into the U.S. for six months from the date of issuance, including multiple entries. All dogs entering the United States must have a microchip and be over six months of age.

If you have any questions, contact the clinic and we will do our best to answer them!

- As of July 19th, 2024
Important info if you plan on traveling to the USA with your dog

Are you planning a trip with your dog that takes you to (or through) the US after August 1, 2024? The CDC has instituted new regulations for entering the USA with your dog.
The requirements and regulations for your dog to travel across the border into the USA, have changed. The following are the requirements as of August 1,2024

- Your dog must be at least 6 months old when crossing the US border.

- An ISO microchip is mandatory and must be implanted before the rabies vaccine is administered.
* If the dog did not have an ISO microchip at the time of their most recent Rabies vaccine, the dog must be re-vaccinated after the microchip is implanted.

-Veterinary record/document/receipt dated 6-12 months before travel. The record must indicate the dog's physical description, and microchip number. This record can include an exam, nail trim, medication refill, etc.
* If the dog has been microchipped for less than 6 months, you will require one veterinary record that indicates the dog's physical description and is dated 6-12 months before the microchip implant, as well as one veterinary record with a description of the pet and the microchip number after implantation.

- Owners must complete a "CDC Dog Import Form" for each dog, including photos of the pet (link below). This form must be completed online and a receipt of the submission ( sent via email once the form has been submitted) must be printed and added to your travel documents. The form can be found at the following link:

https://cdc-786687.workflowcloud.com/forms/fb112553-dd9a-4c3e-a75f-12d6b7e2f2a4

- Completed documentation is valid as long as the documented Rabies vaccine is up-to-date, and can be used at any USA Board of Entry. Valid documentation can be used for multiple entries.
- If your dog appears unwell when you arrive at the border crossing, border officials may retain the pet until a US customs veterinarian can examine it. This would be at the importers' expense.
Failure to meet these requirements may result in your dog being declined entry to the USA.

We understand that these changes may create some confusion and frustration. The CFIA has had several calls, questions, and concerns, and is in discussions with the CDC to negotiate ways to simplify this process. Details may change over the next few weeks as the CDC and CFIA discuss the regulations and the public concerns. This is currently the most up-to-date information available. We will update you as we find out more information.

We wish you a safe and happy travels!

Canada Day is approaching quickly! If your pet is fearful of loud noises or not used to crowds, ensure they are safe and contained at home while you enjoy the festivities!

Remember that not all our pets want to be around when fireworks and other festivities are happening, if you are planning to enjoy fireworks, outside of planned events, please notify your neighbors so they can take proper precautions for their pets.

We hope you and your fur family members have a great holiday weekend!

04/02/2024

With Motherā€™s Day are rapidly approaching and Easter just behind us, to celebrate these occasions, people often give flowers to express love, gratitude and best wishes.

Unfortunately, many of the flowers that we give are dangerous to our pets. One of the most dangerous and toxic plants is the lily (the Easter lily, Tiger lily, Stargazer and other Oriental lilies, Asiatic lilies, and all Hemerocallis or daylily species).
What many people (and unfortunately pets) do not know is that EVERY PART OF THE LILY IS FATALLY TOXIC. This includes the pollen, petals, leaves, stems, and even WATER FROM THE VASE
Ingestion of even a small amount of any part of the lily can result in acute kidney damage and failure.

If you have dogs and cats, please be sure to check all your holiday bouquets for and remove any Lilies. If you gave a bouquet containing lilies this weekend, please be sure the recipient does not have pets in the home.

Should your pet be exposed to lilies, and you feel they may have ingested any part of the plant or water, have them assessed immediately by a veterinarian.

February is dental month in Alberta!! Dental month is when we focus on education, diagnosis and treatment of oral and dental health in our pets.

Dental health is crucial in your pets health. Dental disease can lead to a number of issues, including but not limited to bad breath, painful teeth, inappetence and systemic illness.

RVC is here to help determine if your pet is suffering from dental disease, to explain the recommended treatments or management that would best be suited to your pet and to provide surgical dental treatment if necessary.

Feel free to give us a call and ask about dental month and how appropriate dental care can benefit your cat or dog.

Contact RVC today and ask about the benefits of dental health month! 780-987-4838

01/22/2024

February is Dental Health Month!

Has your pet's breath been getting worse? Have you noticed any swelling around the mouth? Red gums or potential discomfort?

While you would think a decreased appetite would be the first sign of dental disease, that is not often the case. Unless quite ill, most animals will eat despite oral discomfort. Typical signs of significant dental disease are odor, evidence of tartar, blood or pus along the gum line, and loose or missing teeth.

Dental health is just as important for our pets as it is for us. Poor oral health can contribute to bad breath, pain, systemic infection, and can have negative effects on the lungs, heart, and liver. Some studies show indications of increased risk of oral and systemic cancers related to untreated dental disease.

If you are interested in learning more about your pets dental health, or are concerned that your pet may be experiencing dental disease, please give us a call and ask about our complementary Dental Health Assessment! RVC staff can advise you on how to take care of and monitor your pets dental health.

Extreme cold warnings are present for the Edmonton area.

More than a few minutes out in this extreme cold can be dangerous. Please make sure your pets are inside for their safety.

If you have the ability to set-up an outdoor cat shelter for any outdoor stray or would cats please consider doing so.

For our high drive or high energy dogs, try things like setting up a scavenger hunt with their kibble, puzzle feeding, or hide and seek to keep their brains engaged!

Stay warm

The Holidays are getting closer! With all your friends and family visiting, remember that table scraps and sweets can be harmful to your pets. We recommend having pet-friendly treats in a common area (use veggies like carrots for great low-calorie treats) to reduce the risk of GI upset, toxicity, and other potential hazards.

Dear RVC family

As we move into flu ( and COVID) season, we are asking that you please let us know if you are feeling unwellšŸ¤§šŸ¤’šŸ˜· at the time of your appointment.

We are a very small clinic with one veterinarian and 4 staff members. When one of us gets sick, it is next to impossible to run our facility to the standard we (and you) expect.

We do our best to stay healthy so we can be available to you and your furry loved ones, so would appreciate your help with this. šŸ™‚

We do and will continue to offer curbside service should you be under the weather and require your pet to be seen.

Thank you in advance!

Riverview Veterinary Clinic will be closed Monday October 9th 2023 for Thanksgiving. Please ensure you have enough food and medication for your pet over the long weekend.

As tempting as it may be to allow our pets to share in the festivities and family dinners, remember that people food is not healthy for them and can often cause vomiting, diarrhea and other concerns.

We recommend keeping a treat jar or bag of treats (even better if they can be broken into smaller pieces) near the door for our family and friends who need to share!

Regular hours will resume Tuesday October 10th, 2023.
Happy Thanksgiving!

September is Spay and Neuter month at RVC!

It is soon time to have all those spring kittens and puppies spayed and neutered! Did you know that there are medical, physical and behavioral benefits to having your pet altered?

Having your pet spayed or neutered is the ideal way to prevent unwanted litters. It can decrease territorial aggression, roaming and dominance behaviours. It also helps to prevent a number of long term medical conditions including but not restricted to severe prostatic inflammation, mammary (breast) cancer, uterine infections and ovarian tumors.

Feel free to pop in or give us a call to discuss the pro's and con's of these procedures with an RVC staff member. We are happy to answer your questions and we can fill you in on the benefits of Spay and Neuter Month!
