Check it out, folks! Wembley just aced another training milestone, and let me tell you, it's nothing short of spectacular! Get ready for jaw-dropping jumps and heart-pounding excitement!
When it comes to exploring their habitats, our trainers at Marine Life pull out all the stops with a technique called desensitization! Alayne, one of Wembley's incredible trainers, has been using active desensitization to show Wembley that the ramp to the top of Sea Lions Rock is an adventure waiting to happen! And guess what? He's taking on that tower like a champion, exploring every nook and cranny all on his own. That's right, folks—it's passive desensitization time! Wembley's owning that tower, investigating like a true pro without a trainer in sight.
And hold onto your hats because here comes the best part—Wembley's discovered his inner diver! He's leaping off that tower with style and grace, showcasing the natural brilliance of California Sea Lions. Let's give it up for Wembley and his awe-inspiring achievements! Keep soaring, Wembley! 🌟
Marine Life Spotlight: Confronting Your Fears!
Hey, ocean enthusiasts! Today, let's dive into the intriguing world of marine life and dispel some myths about our toothy friends. Brace yourself, as we're going to talk about galeophobia - the fear of sharks!
But fear not because knowledge conquers fear, right?
Myth: Sharks are dangerous man-eating creatures!!
Fact: Contrary to popular belief, sharks are brilliant creatures. With highly developed senses and an impressive ability to adapt to their environment, they play a vital role in maintaining the health of our oceans. They deserve our respect and understanding. Nurse sharks, found here at Marine Life, are pretty chilled out and pose minimal threat to humans.
Myth: Shark Attacks are common!
Fact: Shark Attacks are not common at all! You are statistically more likely to be struck by lightning, win the lottery, or meet your end from a falling coconut. There have been only nine shark-related fatalities this year, whereas humans kill around 100 million sharks yearly. Sharks should definitely be more scared of humans than we should be scared of them!
Let's celebrate the incredible variety of marine life we share this planet with, including the misunderstood sharks. By debunking myths and spreading awareness, we can foster a deeper appreciation for these magnificent creatures.
Remember, knowledge is power! Feel free to share any myths you've heard about sharks. Let's promote a world where humans and marine animals coexist harmoniously.

🏊🦈🌊Dive into Shark Awareness Week! 🌊🦈
Did you know that sharks are more than just ocean predators? They play a vital role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. In honor of Shark Awareness Week, let's uncover three jaw-dropping facts about these incredible creatures:
1️⃣ Did you know sharks have been around for over 400 million years? That's right, they have been swimming in our oceans since before dinosaurs! Talk about standing the test of time. ⏲️
2️⃣Contrary to popular belief, not all sharks are ferocious man-eaters. In fact, over 90% of shark species are completely harmless to humans. So the next time you swim in the sea, remember that sharks are more misunderstood than we think. 🏊♂️⛱️
3️⃣Have you ever wondered how sharks manage to detect their prey from miles away? It's all thanks to their remarkable sense of smell, up to 10,000 times more powerful than humans. They can smell a single tsp of blood in an Olympic-sized swimming pool. 🩸👃
So, let's celebrate Shark Awareness Week by spreading knowledge and debunking myths about these incredible creatures. Remember, they are a crucial part of our oceans, deserving our admiration and protection. Let's work together to ensure their survival and the harmony of our marine ecosystems.🌊💙

🐟Animal of the week alert!🐟 Meet Lemon, our adorable cownose stingray.
This stunning aquatic creature is known for its unique, triangular-shaped head and cow-like nostrils along its snout. Lemon loves to glide gracefully through the water, using its pectoral fins to swim and its whip-like tail to protect itself from predators.
At Marine Life, Lemon is a crowd favourite! Visitors love watching Lemon swim through our tank and interact with the other fish sharing her tank. She is generally found with a trail of fish following behind her. Did you know that cownose stings are very social animals, and a large group of them are called a "fever of stingrays"?
The cownose ray has a venomous spine directly behind its dorsal fin's base. But even in large groups, the cownose ray is shy and not threatening. It generally swims at the surface, posing minimal risk to humans who might accidentally step on its spine, which is the cause of most ray injuries.
Come down to the Sea Life Caverns and say hello to Lemon this week!

It’s Pupdate time!
Our youngest sea lion resident Wembley turns 10 months old today! He was born on July 20th 2022 to his mom, Quinty, and dad, Pablo.
Wembley’s exploring his world with gusto and you can often see him zooming around the showpool area with Quinty, playing with his favourite enrichment items or working with his trainers so keep your eyes peeled when you’re walking past. His latest favourite thing to interact with is actually squid! Even though Wembley has been seen tossing some squid around he is still nursing all the time and could continue nursing until he is two years old! California Sea Lions are known to shake their heads to toss items around, when it comes to larger fish this allows them to rip pieces off so that they can swallow the pieces without chewing!
If you would like to learn more about our animals and how we care for all the animals in our CAZA-accredited aquarium, please stop by for a visit we are open 7 days a week! We have presentations throughout the day, and on Saturdays and Sundays, we have our 2 p.m. sea lion shows. For a special treat, at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 22, we will have an extra sea lion show where you can learn more about the California Sea Lions and get to see them in action!
Happy 10 months, Wembley!

It's time for everyone's favourite segment: the Animal of the Week!
Since today is Earth Day, we would like to feature Kiwi, our Red - Footed Tortoise!
Kiwi is about 20-25 years old and came to Marine Life in 2015. She is very active and social and her favourite foods are bell peppers, strawberries, and cauliflower.
What do red-footed Tortoises have to do with Earth Day you ask?
When Red - Footed Tortoises (and many other animals ) eat fruit, they consume the seeds of that fruit as well. When the animals poop, sometimes the seeds come out in the poop and then the seeds end up in the ground and can grow a new fruit tree! Currently, the Amazon rainforest is being threatened by unsustainable logging and urban development.
But there are things you can do right here in Edmonton to help the planet this Earth Day! Reduce your electicity and power usage, think about what you are throwing out and if it can be reused in some way and maybe even go plant a tree!
You can come see Kiwi in Sea Life Caverns Monday - Thursday 11-4 and Friday, Saturday and Sunday 11-5!
From the staff at Marine Life, have a very Happy Earth Day!

Day 5 of #PiabaWeek is all about you!
There are many sources of ornamental fish you can purchase for your home aquarium. Do you know how to find out which sources are sustainable?
Ask the supplier where their fish come from! Purchasing fish from the Rio Negro region, for example, can actually save the Amazon Rainforest. As Project Piaba says, Buy a Fish, Save a Tree!

We would like to take the time to wish a very happy 4 months to Wembley, our youngest California Sea Lion! Wembley was born at Marine Life on July 20th, 2022, at 9:10am. As a marine mammal, Wembley is still fully nursing from his mom, Quinty.
Since our last update, Wembley has grown increasingly confident and playful! He is spending much more time in our large showpool area with his mom, Quinty, and even sometimes with “grandma” Clara. Clara helped raise Quinty when she first arrived at our facility in 2010, when she was only 1.5 years old!
Guests can often see Wembley swimming, jumping, resting, and playing in our showpool, especially in the morning hours. Timing for Wembley being in the showpool is highly variable and not guaranteed, so be sure to enjoy his playful demeanor if you are lucky enough to catch him! Wembley continues to display his personality to his trainers and interacts very well with his enrichment, including webbed balls, floating firehose strip mat, and his “carrot”.
You may also be able to hear Wembley when walking through the mall! He has a distinct vocal sound, like a baby lamb bleating. So, be sure to keep an ear open for it!
Happy 4 months, Wembley!

Cuban Boas are the largest arboreal snake species in the world, reaching almost 5 meters in length. They also have brilliant rainbow colors all over their body due to refraction of light on their prismatic scales.
Highly intelligent hunters, they have developed cooperative behaviour when hunting bats by hanging like a curtain of snakes at the cave entrance to snatch them as they leave or return home.
Come check out the beautiful patterns on Pedra and the other patterns of camouflage on all our animals right here in Sea Life Caverns. We are open 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM Monday – Thursdays and until 5:00 PM Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
