If you share your home with a brachycephalic breed of dog, be aware that they are at a much increased risk of heat stroke compared to other dogs. These dogs have much smaller nasal cavities due to their 'squished' faces and they can't cool themselves effectively. These breeds can't tolerate heat and exertion and you need to be sure to keep them cool!

Are you traveling to the US with your dog this summer/fall? There are SIGNIFICANT changes coming as of August 1st for traveling with dogs across the border. These changes are being made by US governmental agencies and the exact requirements are still being finalized. As such, we do not have all of the answers to all of the questions at this time, but want anyone who travels to the US with their dogs to be aware of these upcoming, significant changes. We know to watch for heat stroke in humans, but let's not forget that our pets can suffer from heat stroke as well! These hot temperatures put our pets at a much higher risk of developing heat stroke, which can be fatal. When the temperatures outside are high, try to take your pet for walks early in the day and later in the evenings. Also, remember that some dogs will want to play even if it's not safe for them to do so. If you have a ball obsessed pooch, remember that they won't stop until they are overheated. Keep them inside where it's cool and make sure that they have access to cool water at all times.

With these hot days of summer come many risks to our pets. One thing that sometimes pet owners don't think of, is how hot sidewalks and asphalt can be on our dog's paws. They can easily burn and blister. If you think your dog's paw pads are burned, call us and we can help.

With the heatwave and high temperatures that are expected this week, it's always a good reminder to never leave your pets in a hot car! It takes very little time for the temperature inside a vehicle to induce a possibly fatal heat stroke.
The Ontario SPCA says that if an animal is left unattended in a car, not to break the vehicle window. Rather it advises reporting it by calling the Provincial Animal Welfare Services at 1-833-9Animal (264625), or the police.

In our area we recommend heartworm prevention to be given to your dogs from June to November. This is just a friendly reminder that if time has gotten away from you, it's time to start your prevention. We typically recommend a product called Interceptor Plus as it is a tasty once a month chew, that not only prevents heartworm, but also is a complete deworming product (there are parasites/worms that can be a risk to human health as well). There are other great products if your pet has some different needs. If you haven't picked up your prevention yet, just call the clinic-it's not too late! 613-382-2900

Please join us in wishing Tracy a very happy birthday today! We are so fortunate to have a manager and leader who cares so much about each and every one of us. Tracy has always done whatever TIVS has needed over her 25+ years with us and while we may make a big deal about it just today, we appreciate everything she does for us every day. We hope you had a wonderful day at home and that you spent it with puppies, Tracy! Happy Birthday!

On World Veterinary Day let's take a minute to thank our own veterinarians for the amazing work that they do every day. We are so lucky to work with Dr. Stevenson, Dr. Janssen, Dr. Gerritsen and even sometimes still-Dr. Willows! They are all amazing at what they do and they all care about their clients as much as they care about their patients.

Q. What is Veterinary Receptionist Week?
A. Veterinary Receptionist Week is a time dedicated to celebrating the hardworking receptionists in veterinary clinics. They are often the first point of contact for pet owners and play an integral role in ensuring a positive experience for both pets and their owners.
Tessa and Tanya are the unsung heroes of our clinic! They are usually the first people that our clients speak to when they have a concern about their pets. These ladies juggle our schedule and always do their absolute best to accommodate as many patients as they can every day. They keep us on track and we'd be lost without them. We hope that they feel appreciated every day, but this week we are making an even bigger effort to thank them!

Tracy here. As many of you know, my husband and I breed registered Border Collies. I have always said how proud I am of our staff and the quality of medicine and care that we provide. Well today I got to experience that compassion and care first hand as a client with an emergency. Our girl Luna was whelping today (thanks to progesterone testing, we knew that today was her due date and an x-ray last week told us that we were only expecting 3 pups), and puppy #2 got stuck in the birth canal and wouldn't budge. My co-workers, made Luna a priority and it was literally all hands on deck. So Luna and her 2 babies got the benefit of not only amazing nursing care, but three very skilled veterinarians involved in her c-section! Puppy #2 couldn't be saved, but without the TIVS team we wouldn't have saved puppy #3.
Now momma and her two babies are home and doing great! Thank you to each and every staff member at TIVS! I appreciate you all more than you know! ❤️

Now obviously we're working on Eclipse themed names. We have a female and a male pup to name. Hit me with your suggestions in the comments. I'll also add that Luna is named that because she and her littermates were born on a full moon.
And yes, both of these kids are spoken for. Their families have been on our waitlist for some time and also both have previously gotten pups from us, so we're excited about the amazing homes that these babies will be going to! ❤️

If anyone is concerned about their pets or other animals during tomorrow's solar eclipse, hopefully this great article helps clear those up.

Hello friends!

The total solar eclipse is just around the corner, and just about everyone is ready to see the once in a lifetime event. We are seeing some mixed information about pet/wildlife safety.

Contrary to what some may read, the sun itself is not any more dangerous during the eclipse. The reason protective eye wear is recommended for humans (who wish to observe the eclipse) is because many of us will be staring directly at the sun that day, which is something we typically avoid.

For our pets, and outdoor wildlife, that day will be similar to any other day. Our pets don’t stare at the sun, so there is no need to keep them indoors on April 08 for any extended period of time. They may notice the change in temperature, but it is unlikely they will exhibit any unusual behaviour.

The eclipse can be more unsettling for birds. The dimming of the sky can mimic behaviour at dusk and during early storm formation, so some birds may demonstrate a wind-down behaviour and there may be less activity in the sky during the peak eclipse. Once the sky returns to normal, so does their behaviour.

If you are purchasing eclipse glasses, please make sure they meet these criteria. For additional information about the eclipse please see:
https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/safety/

For a list of approved solar-viewing goggles please see:

https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters

It is not safe to watch the eclipse through the lens of your smartphone - it can damage both your phone camera and your eyes. Try this instead:

Safe watching our friends!

Remember to keep your pets out of the chocolate, and watch for xylitol and to not feed cooked bones or fatty gravy and turkey/ham fat and skin to your pets. We love seeing our patients, but we don't want to see any of them for preventable things like pancreatitis or toxicities.

We want you and your furry family members to have a safe Easter. So remember, keep the chocolate up and away from the pooches, and do not bring Easter Lilies into your home since they are deadly to cats if even a tiny amount is ingested.

Ticks can be active when there is still snow on the ground. Any time that the temperature is 4 degrees C or above, ticks are active. Many people still think that they don't need to worry about tick prevention in the winter months. The attached calendar marks every day in 2023 that the weather was warm enough for ticks to be active in Kingston. As you can see, there wasn't a single month where there was zero risk of active ticks.
