The HBSPCA is still receiving a number of calls for pets in hot cars. The Hamilton Police and the Provicial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) are the only two organizations that can attend a call and save a life.

Today we share a happy adoption story about a graduate of our Barn Buddy Program!
Hello,
I wanted to reach out to give you an update on “Mister”. We adopted him from your barn buddy program in April.
He was very skid-dish and we never saw him. We placed a camera in the barn so we could make sure that he was safe and around. About 3 weeks into being secured in the barn he broke out of the barn through the soffit. We located him outside and left the barn open so he could come back for food and water.
He did return daily but so did some racoons, possums and a neighbours barn cat. About a week of trying to have him return alone we were able to secure the barn again with him inside.
Since this time we noticed him moving around more during the day and not running as much when we would enter.
Since Friday he has really opened up. He started to observe me from the loft instead of running away. Each day he got closer and closer and this morning we got to the point that he let me pet him.
He’s still nervous when my husband or two young boys come in but we are so happy with his progress.
He seems happier being secured in the barn vs being outside and will let him guide how close he gets to our family. He’s been renamed after the Bluey kids show and now goes by BINGO.
We are happy that we can provide him with a space that he needs.

You may have read that post-pandemic, shelters everywhere are nearing or at capacity and we are no exception. When our kennels are full and our foster homes are at capacity, that only means one thing: our intake of animals in need becomes limited or closes all together.
The average length of stay for animals in our care is 25 days.
The average cost of care per day for dogs like Fame is $43, and that's just for food, shelter and care. It does not encompass medical care, spay/neuter, microchipping, vaccination costs or other.
That means that on average, not counting medical expenses, just to take a dog into our care costs $1,075.

Rotating feeding enrichment activities are a regular part of a cat's life here at the shelter. It helps to keep them stimulated, curious and excited. Come behind the scenes while our Animal Care Attendant , Mackenzie preps over 25 tuna enrichment treats.

Large dogs typically take a bit longer to find their new families and foster homes can make a world of difference for these gentle giants.
Heavy D, Elmer Fudd and Aspynn are all benefiting from the love that comes from being out of the shelter. Running in the yard, napping on the couch, making friends with the other dogs in the home and meeting new people are just some of the ways a foster home can reduce the stress of a shelter dog.
Of course, while they are loving their foster homes our ultimate goal is for them to to find their forever home with their new family.

Gum Drop arrived to our shelter from an overcrowded home with a terrible infection in both his eyes.
