Today is check the chip day!

Sadly no this is not a day to check in the pantry for chips! Today is a day to remind pet owners to update and check their microchip information online to make sure it is the most accurate information. There is no point in having a microchip if the information won't help us find their owner.

Take advantage of this reminder:
~ Make an appointment with us for microchipping if your pet isn’t already microchipped (then make sure that your pet’s chip is immediately registered). We like to microchip at time of spay or neuter because it is nice as they are sleeping for it, but it can be done at anytime (with a bit of local freezing)!
~Check your already-microchipped pet’s registration information in the microchip manufacturer’s database, and make sure it’s up-to-date.

🩺August is National Immunization Awareness Month! 💉

Here are 5 great reasons to vaccinate your pets!

1. Vaccinations prevent many pet illnesses
2. Vaccinations can help avoid extremely costly treatments for diseases that can be prevented.
3. Vaccinations prevent diseases that can be passed between animals, and also from animals to people.
4. Diseases prevalent in wildlife, such as rabies (an incurable deadly disease), and distemper which can infect unvaccinated pets. We have seen numerous cases of distemper around our area!
5. In many areas, local or state ordinances require certain vaccinations of household pets.
6. (extra thought)- A lot of boarding facilities and groomers require up to date vaccinations.

📣Pet Traveling Notice 📣✈️
Pets travelling to the United States the rules have changed!

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated their travel rules for dogs, effective August 1, 2024. It is very important to make sure you’re up-to-date on these new regulations before you leave by checking out the full list of requirements on the CDC website. Please spread the word and share this with anyone you know who goes to the US with their pets.

Please do extensive research before coming to the vet clinic about what the destination country you are going to requires pets to have. Please book an appointment or consultation well in advance so that it gives our vets ample time to finish up paperwork (there is also a cost for forms the doctors have to fill out).

Happy this weeks topic is Cruciate injuries in dogs!

We see this type of injury quite often here at the clinic! This injury is the same as tearing your ACL as a human; you are partially or completely tearing the crutiate ligament in your knee. It is the type of injury where doing nothing can damage other areas in the knee, and it can lead to very painful arthritis. Typical treatment includes implementing strict cage/kennel rest, pain and anti-inflammatory medications, lasering, braces, and/or surgery.

Happy Topic Tuesday! Todays topic is Allergies in Cats and Dogs!

These are the information sheets we send with clients if we think their animal has clinical signs related to allergies such as: scratching at their body, recurrent ear and skin infections, skin lesions, hair plucking and hair loss, and licking at their paws. There are multiple other conditions other than allergies that can cause those clinical signs, such as ectoparasites like mites.

Your best bet is to book an appointment with your veterinarian and they can get a comprehensive history and do diagnostics (skin scrapings, ear and skin cytology etc.) to see what they are dealing with, so that they can treat the right condition with the right medications.

National Insurance Awareness Day!

There are a few different companies that offer Veterinary insurance. The one most of our clients seem to use is Trupanion. They have an exciting offer where if you apply for insurance the same day (within 24 hours) of your vet visit, you will have no wait time between application and policy start date and no cost to activate!!

In order for the insurance to work and for your pet to be covered, the policy needs to be in place before the animal gets sick or diagnosed with an illness/condition. The best way to avoid facing issues with pre-existing conditions is to enroll your pet while they are young and healthy. The sooner you sign up, the more likely it is that any future injuries and illnesses are covered by your insurance plan.
