Introducing "Ronda Rosey" and "Miesha Tweet"!
Although less active than other parrots, Bourkeās Parakeets are active during dawn and dusk. They are smart and affectionate and will bond with a human companion.
The birdās friendly nature, along with its colorful plumage and soft, tinkling call, make it a good choice for anyone seeking a quiet
and devoted pet parrot.
Bourkeās parakeets in the wild learn to hide any sign of illness, as that can attract predators. Watch your bourke parakeet closely to catch the first signs of failing health. Signs of illness in the rosy bourke parakeet include: crusty beak or toes, loss of appetite, fluffed up on the bottom of the cage, listless and p**p stuck to vent. Contact your veterinarian if you notice any of these.
Keep your bourke parakeetās claws trimmed.
How many hours a day should parrot be out of cage?
A good rule of thumb to follow, however, is to take small parrots out of their cage for 2 hours a day and large parrots for 3 hours. This should be more than enough time for them to get some exercise, experience the surrounding environment, taking in all the sights, sounds and smells.
What is the best food for Bourkes?
Bourke's should be fed a diet of high quality parakeet mix, pellets, black oil sunflower, sprouted seeds and a variety of fresh fruit and dark leafy vegetables. Apples, bananas, and carrots have proved to be these birds' favorite foods.
Do Bourke parrots like toys?
These birds like long horizontal flights, so provide a safe flying environmentāfree of other animals, ceiling fans, and open doors or windows. Your Bourke's parakeet will enjoy plenty of toys.
What happens if a parakeet gets too cold?
A chilly bird will frequently put his head down and tuck his beak into his chest. A cold bird will also shiver. Parakeets and cockatiels usually sleep on one foot with the other one curled up underneath them. If your bird's feathers are puffed up and it looks like he's sleeping on both feet, chances are he's cold.
Do parakeets cages need to be covered at night?
As long as a dark, quiet and somewhat secluded area is provided for a bird to sleep in, most will be fine without being covered at night. Remember, however, that sleep is vital to a bird's well-being. If you are in doubt about your pet's reaction to being uncovered, play it safe and resume covering the cage at night.
What temperature should a Bourke parakeet be kept at?
cage space of 30 x 18 for a pair although we breed our Bourkes in a same species aviary with several pairs and nest boxes hung throughout. They do best in temps between 60-85 degrees.
What size cage for Bourke's parrot?
As Bourke's parakeets are smaller parakeets, you can choose a cage with bar spacing of no more than Ā½ inch but the dimensions should be suitable for a larger parakeet, around 24 inches in width by 24 inches in depth by 36 inches in height.

Bourke's Parrots aka Bourke Parakeets (Neopsephotus Bourkii) are endangered in their own homeland of Southwestern and Central Australia, but are popular in aviculture. The Bourke's parakeet makes a great pet because it is very friendly and bonds quickly with owners, especially if you hand feed them from a young age. Being quite relaxed birds, the Bourke's parakeet isn't too loud and only really makes noise at sunrise and sunset so they are suitable for homes with close neighbours.
The lifespan of Bourke's parrots is probably similar to the budgerigar, around five to eight years while in captivity.
