Deer come out at dusk. The Okanagan Center Road area is notorious for this. They are on the road EVERY evening. There is a reason why there is a 30 km speed limit on some of the turns. Slow Down.

We had hoped to keep our booking option open. Some people like to book ahead. Unfortunately we've been having some issues with it. We've had to take it down several times to fix errors. It's becoming very labor intensive and we've decided to take it down for the time being. The increase in our high season admission rate, along with the hot weather and less tourists is having the effect we needed, that of reducing our visitation in high season. I know that sounds counterintuitive to want to deliberately reduce visitation but we have no choice. We are only allowed to have so many vehicles on our lot at one time. This is mandated by the RDCO which monitors our use of the property and issues our business license. Prices will go back to what they were previously after the labor Day weekend.

I've never posted a Google Review on our page before but this is just too funny to keep to myself. It's a review by one Nupur Gaba:

I recently visited this farm with high hopes of experiencing a pleasant day with the animals, but I left with serious concerns. While the farm boasts a range of animals available for petting, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss.

Upon arrival, the setting appeared idyllic, with well-maintained grounds and an array of animals seemingly ready to interact with visitors. However, as I began to engage with the animals, their unusually lethargic behavior struck me as odd. Animals that are typically more active, like goats and kangaroos, seemed unnaturally calm and indifferent to the surrounding activities and noise.

As I observed further, it became evident that many of the animals were displaying signs of sedation. Their responses were slow, and they seemed overly docile, which made me question their wellbeing. It's natural for animals to have varied temperaments, but the uniformity of their subdued behavior across different species was alarming.

This raised a red flag about the farm's practices. The idea that the animals might be drugged to ensure they are easy to pet is deeply troubling. Not only is this unethical, but it also compromises the animals' health and natural behaviors. Such practices, if true, reflect poorly on the farm's commitment to animal welfare and responsible tourism.

While this farm might provide an easy and accessible petting experience, the potential cost to the animals' health and wellbeing is too great to ignore. I hope the management addresses these concerns promptly, ensuring that the animals are treated with the care and respect they deserve. Until then, I would advise potential visitors to reconsider supporting this establishment.

THE PROMPT RESPONSE FROM MANAGEMENT:

You caught us fair and square you smarty-pants. We might as well give you a full confession: We sedate our animals. The top secret concoction of an unknown elixir is produced at an undisclosed location by the evil mastermind who owns the zoo. Her minions then gather at dawn to dispense the noxious substance to the pathetically addicted inmates which have been trained to line up according to weight and species so that the appropriate dose can be delivered with maximum efficiency. Obviously this process takes quite some time given that there are hundreds of animals and birds on the property. Additional time has to be allowed for animals which are not as typically cooperative as the rest. Those animals have to be chased down and sat on while one of the minions rams the carefully calibrated dose down it's throat, or beak, or up its cloaca, or whatever or***ce happens to be handy. On special occasions, such as Christmas and Easter, the drug is injected rather than being administered orally. Hypodermics are purchased in bulk. This gives the animals an extra-special buzz. (At one time we did try blowing ma*****na smoke in the animals' faces, but the minions tended to become more sedated than the animals, and our Door Dash bills went through the roof!). Once sedation has been achieved the minions load their drugged victims into wheelbarrows and distribute them decoratively around the property for the enjoyment of our visitors. We do this every day. It's exhausting. Next year we might just have all the animals stuffed. Much less effort.

You see? You are not the only one who can write fiction. Only difference is that I did it without the help of an AI App, GPT. The University you attend, which will remain nameless for now, has suggested that I approach you directly and ask you to take your review down. I suggest you do it VERY promptly.

Yet another dog left in a car again today by a couple that were annoyed that we couldn't baby-sit their dog while they visited. Their solution was to take the dog back to their car and hide it in a crate down on the floor. They didn't even crack the windows. Luckily they were seen doing it, and were made to take the dog out again. Then just to top things off they went home and gave us a one star review. Fantastic. Let's hope they don't have children.

Apparently it's that time of year again and we have to go over some old ground: Don't leave a dog in a car. Not even for a little while. We don't care if your car is in the shade, the windows are cracked and the dog has water. The RCMP don't care either. The last visitor we had that left their dog in their car got a $500 fine. The RCMP officer told us that if he had deemed the dog distressed enough that he had to confiscate it in order to take it to a vet the visitor would have been criminally charged. Don't Leave A Dog in a Car!

I think most of our regular visitors understand why we are increasing our rates come July 1st of this year. I know it's frustrating that the cost of everything is going up. It's going up for us too. We have more and more animals all the time in order to keep up with the number of visitors we have. We can only have so many visitors around one animal. More animals means more feed. Most of our animals eat a lot of fresh produce. We buy the best. They eat the same grade of fresh produce as people. We go through thousands of dollars in fresh produce alone every month. This cost is year-round. Then there is all the dry food and the hay. A lot of it.

Then there are the vet bills. Those with just one or two pets know how much that costs. Now imagine hundreds of animals and birds. Our animals are not discarded when they get old or sick. If they still have good quality of life we keep supporting them.

If you saw our heating bills you'd have a heart attack. Thousands of dollars a month over the Winter.

Minimum wage has recently been increased. We already pay well over minimum wage to our 52 plus locally sourced employees, but obviously we have to keep apace of increases in minimum wage in order for our employees to keep ahead of inflation. I think a lot of people imagine that our only costs are those associated with feeding the animals. They imagine that some or all of our staff are volunteers. We have exactly zero volunteers. Many of our employees have degrees and we pay for them to take first aid courses. We have an extremely robust recreational program for our employees.

There's thousands of dollars in liability insurance and considerable costs associated with maintenance and repairs as well as the fact that we are always striving to increase customer satisfaction and our levels of professionalism.

We make 80% of our profit in July and August. That has to take us through the entire year. It seems we also have to be prepared to compensate for various disasters beyond our control. During the fires last year we had to close for over a week. During that period the tourists went home. When we re-opened our season was pretty much done. We probably lost about 25% of our projected income for that year. There's every likelihood that will happen again this year. And then there's the whole AirB&B issue. Where are all the tourists going to stay this year. We already have a shortage of hotel rooms. Are they going to pitch a tent? I think it's more likely that a significant percentage of them won't bother coming to Kelowna at all.

Our administrator was asked how much we are increasing our rates in July. They are as follows:

$30 adults (16 yrs to 64)
$15 for children (5 yrs to 15 years)
$15 seniors (65 yrs and up)
$0 for children under 5.

Yes, that's a big increase, but unfortunately it's necessary. In my opinion it's still an extremely good deal. I suggest you plug in the cost of taking 2 children over 5 with their parents to a movie along with the amount of treats you normally buy from the concession. I think you will find we are cheaper. Movies are 2 hours long and you can go to a movie anywhere and at any time.

Better yet, compare with the Vancouver Zoo where you will not get to walk up to an obviously happy animal and pet it and feed it treats which have been provided for free. If you want to go "behind the scenes" at the Vancouver Zoo you'll pay hundreds of dollars and you STILL won't get to approach or touch an animal.

I hope that most people will understand that we are only doing what we have to in order to safeguard our animals and our business.

To end on a positive note, we are committed to giving locals (and out of season tourists) discounted admission between when we open and July 1st. Those admission rates have not changed since last year.

I'd like to thank everyone who has been so supportive of us over the years and I hope we will see you again this year.

Caroline MacPherson, Director.
