Yesterday, Eclipse Acres hosted its very first clinic since moving here in Nov. 2022 from Ontario. Four of us, myself included, enjoyed fabulous lessons in a half-day mini-clinic with the wonderful Jane Fraser (and, of course, her adorable sidekick, Dottie!). The weather was on the hot side, but the arena stayed relatively cool with a breeze coming through which was a welcomed relief.

We hope to continue with similar clinics in the future.

Today was the first hack I’ve taken since I moved in back in Nov 2022. It was nippy in the wind, but otherwise beautiful. I kept it short and went down to the Annapolis Valley trail (400m from my driveway) and about 200 m down the trail, then back. You can see the farm from the trail, especially on the way back.

It’s so nice to be able to bring them in on blizzardy nights like this!

Today I celebrated Christmas by using my tractor for the first time. I broke it in by dragging/harrowing the indoor arena footing for the first time since I moved here! The footing was very hard packed in places because the former owner stored heavy equipment in the indoor arena. So I did a first pass with the tines set fairly shallow and tried to level it and distribute the sand more evenly. Then came hand-raking the entire perimeter (phew!). Then two more pass with lots of overlap in various directions. Finally, I walked the ring and picked up stones that were in the footing (not from me digging them up, they were there beforehand!). I think it came around nicely for just the first go-over!!!

Merry Christmas!!! 🎄 🎀 ⛄️

I finally got the smaller 2-horse trailer out of the indoor arena and parked between the stable and the outside shelter. I also unloaded the rest of the stuff from the 2+1 trailer and parked i beside the garage. That included the carriage and the harnesses. They will live in the indoor arena as per the photos below. I like the way it all worked out!

Today was the first visit by the new farrier for Eclipse Acres, Maritime Edition. Joe Larochelle of Valley Farrier had big shoes to fill (pardon the pun!) after years of having Dan's excellent work back in Ontario, but he rose to the occasion and did a great job!

This morning's "fun" was removing the broken hay basket from the main paddock, moving the (only remaining intact) hay basket from the donkey's paddock and putting it in the main paddock, then re-jigging hot fence in the donkey paddock to allow me to put up 3 boards and attach slow-feed hay bags to the board (in place of their hay basket). This was all done in 1^C temps in the rain with frozen fingers. Ugh, horses!!!
