Ear mites
These unexpected walk-ins caught a ride in on one of our cat patients this morning.
Ear mites are parasites that live in the ear canal and are contagious to other animals.
Signs & symptoms
- head-shaking
- scratching at ears
- dark brown material in the ear
- inflammation
- drooping head
Through the month of February we had Dental Month and it has been great to share all these smiling faces.
EAR MITES...........................
This slide is unbelievable, recently this poor kitty was seen at The Lloydminster Animal Hospital and was treated for ear mites.
Ear problems in general are uncommon in cats, but among the afflictions that do occur, ear-mite infestation is frequently diagnosed. Ear mites can affect both cats and dogs, but are especially common in cats. Recognizing the symptoms of ear mites in cats will help you treat the condition.
-Head-shaking

-Drooping ear flap

Ear mites in cats are a treatable condition.
Although the temperatures are beginning to fall, do not be fooled that flea and tick season is behind us.
As the fall progresses, American dog tick activity decreases significantly as the day length gets shorter.
However, the fall is when adult blacklegged ticks are most active as cool temperatures are ideal for them.
Late September to mid-December are ideal questing times for adult blacklegged ticks (lyme carrying).
This can come as a surprise to many pet owners as often it is believed that parasite risk will decrease in cooler temperatures.
Though this may be true for some parasites, it is not true for blacklegged ticks.
This reinforces the need for extended tick protection throughout the fall season.
Today is Veterinarian Appreciation Day!!!
Veterinary professionals are tireless advocates for the pets we love (the patients who can’t say where it hurts). They’re the problem solvers, the ones who welcome a challenge: big or small. And this year, we hope you’ll join us in thanking our Doctors!🐾🐈🐕
Ireland is most often credited with giving us a fun holiday to really let loose and be "Irish for a day." Being well known for their hospitality, food, landscape and giving us Riverdance, Ireland also gifted us with something equally as awesome; some pretty unique dog breeds.
Cats tend to enjoy their solidarity, ESPECIALLY during dusk and dawn.
Sunrise is a time in which other fellow creatures outdoors begin to fly and scurry about and your cat most likely wishes to observe his/her “territory”.
Cita, has a few special windows in which she sits and observes.
Where does your cat sit, or do they have a warm sunny spot in which to sleep or view?
We would like to introduce you to Jaycee she is another RVT that assists the Dr's at Southside.
Registered Veterinarian Technologists (RVT) are trained individuals who work with veterinarians to provide patient care, diagnostic and treatment services in a variety of settings.
RVT SPOTLIGHT!
We would like to introduce you to Pat. She is the face behind the scenes, greeting your furry friend when they need a few extra hands to assist the Dr.
All RVT's are superhero's and wear so many hats.

Why vaccinate your indoor cat?
Most pet owners understand the importance of vaccinating pets that come into contact with
other animals. But what if your cat is the stay-at-home type? You may be surprised to learn
that even indoor cats can be exposed to dangerous germs…whether it’s from visiting
houseguests, a trip to the groomer, germ-ridden shoes, or a quick outing to explore the back
yard. Help protect your cat from serious, widespread, and potentially fatal diseases. Schedule
a visit today to discuss your cat’s vaccination needs
It doesn’t take long for canine cough to spread.
When you hear the words ‘canine cough’, what comes to mind? Places where large numbers
of dogs come together, such as a boarding facility or day care center?
It’s important to know that canine cough can happen any time dogs interact—during daily
walks, at the dog park, during playdates. This highly contagious respiratory disease can even
spread if the contact between dogs is very brief, such as during training classes or in an
elevator.
Vaccination can help protect your dog from canine cough. Schedule your dog’s visit today,
and help keep your pet safe when socializing.
Which vaccines are right for your dog?
As a loving pet owner, you know the importance of helping to protect your pet against
disease, including with vaccination. But which vaccines are right for your dog? Some vaccines
are recommended for all dogs. These are called core vaccines, and they help protect against
serious, widespread, and potentially fatal diseases. And depending on where you live or your
dog’s lifestyle, your dog may also need additional vaccines to help keep him or her
protected. Not sure which vaccines are right for your dog? Contact us today and let’s talk!

King has eaten the last of the Valentine chocolate and looks restless, while Cita is vomiting after making a meal of Pat's ice cream.
These regular and human-healthy foods can cause severe intestinal damage or obstruction, long-term sensitivities, metabolism disturbances, organ disease and even death to sensitive companion animals. March is poison prevention awareness month and many pet owners are unaware of the potential serious threats to dogs or cats that are sitting in our cupboards.
