The Dawson Life Jacket is a high performance flotation device for boating, water sports, the beach, the pool, and other water adventures with dogs. Designed with novice swimmers in mind, the neoprene side panels of this dog life vest will keep your dog safe by providing them with comfortable buoyancy and thermal insulation for chilly days on the water. A front neck float adds extra support to help them keep their head above water. Top grab handles provide an easy way to retrieve your dog in an emergency. Adjustable straps keep them secure both in and out of water.

Sometimes, even the best swimmers can experience fatigue, and the Dawson Life Jacket’s bright colours you spot your dog in an emergency situation.

Flat faced breeds, such as French Bulldogs, Pugs or Bulldogs, are susceptible to inhaling water or having difficulty breathing when swimming. Senior dogs, dogs with short legs and long bodies, dogs with low body fat, and dogs with any type of mobility issue will also benefit from a life jacket.

While native flowering plants are the best source of nectar for hummingbirds, supplementing with a well tended hummingbird feeder can provide additional sustenance during nesting season and migration.

The best, and least expensive, solution for your feeder is a 1:4 solution of refined white sugar to tap water. That’s 1/4 cup of sugar in 1 cup of water. Bring the solution to a boil, then let it cool before filling the feeder. You can make a larger batch and refrigerate the extra solution, just remember to bring it up to room temperature before you refill the feeder.

In our region you can expect to see 3 different species of hummingbirds: Rufous, Calliope, and Black-chinned hummingbirds are common here during the summer months.

If you’d like to attract more hummingbirds to your yard you can browse our array of hummingbird feeders either in store or online, and check out this article on how to attract them to your yard and garden.

06/22/2024

Summer is a common time for heat related issues but unexpected warm weather can add to overheating, especially if horses are out of shape and have long, thick coats.

Overheating can result from:

•Hot weather
•High humidity
•Poor barn ventilation
•Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight
•Excessive work
•Transportation
•Obesity

Here are some tips to keep your horse cool and comfortable during hot weather.

Always provide unlimited access to clean water. At rest, an adult horse in a cool climate will drink about 6 to 10 gallons of water daily depending on feed. They’ll drink much more while working or in hot conditions. A horse’s stomach can hold between 2 to 4 gallons of fluid without becoming over distended.

Heat stress can affect any horse but is especially common in older, obese and out of shape horses. Young foals tend to be more prone to heat stress and dehydration. By lightening the workload, moving ride times to the coolest part of the day, and watching for normal sweating you can reduce your horse’s risk of heat stress.

Shade from trees, shelters or buildings will provide your horses relief from the sun. Be aware that the shade will change throughout the day and buildings may block natural airflow.

Consider providing electrolytes to horses that have been sweating heavily or you expect to do so. If you add electrolytes to drinking water, also offer plain water. Some horses don’t like the taste of electrolytes and will drink less. We offer electrolytes formulated specifically for horses from trusted sources such as Mad Barn, Pureform, Power Quench, and EquiPure. Get yours today either in store or on our website.

06/21/2024

We’re in for some true summer weather over the next few days. During this spell of hot temperatures our animals depend on us to make good choices on their behalf.

During summer it is often recommended to exercise your pet with caution. Choose to exercise with your dog earlier in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler, reducing the chances of your pet getting heatstroke. If it’s a hot day, the pavement can get dangerously hot for your pet’s feet. A good rule of thumb is to place the back of your hand on the surface for 5 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog.

When hiking, camping or going to the beach, make sure you bring along a water bowl and water for your pet as well as an umbrella for shade. Towels can be used to dry off your pet and to give them an option of a place to lie down that’s not scorching hot.

We also recommend that you never leave a pet in a hot car, even if it’s in the shade with the windows rolled down and only for a few minutes, because a few minutes is all it takes for pets to suffer heatstroke or worse. Pets are always welcome in both of our stores, and in many of the other businesses in our communities.

We have supplies on hand to keep your pet cool this summer! Come check out our floating pet toys, Coolin’ Pet Pads, and pet electrolytes either in store or on our website.

06/16/2024

Whether you’re new to cat care, or a seasoned cat caretaker, keeping up with the do’s and don’t’s of litter box maintenance is always important to our cats.

Follow the tips below to keep your cats happy!

•Scoop waste daily. Cats prefer a clean area to do their business. So if you’re using clumping litter, scoop and toss clumps every day.

•Clean litter boxes regularly. Wash the litter box every 1-4 weeks with water and a mild detergent and refill with fresh litter.

•When refilling the litter box with fresh litter, if you use clumping litter, fill about three to four inches deep. This ensures enough litter will cover their waste (if they prefer to do so) and allows enough depth to form tight clumps. For non-clumping litter, the box should be filled to about two to three inches.

•Provide enough boxes. Each cat should have their own box, plus one. So, one cat needs two boxes. Two cats will need three boxes.

•Be sure you’re not placing the boxes in undesirable areas. Undesirable can mean a few different things: too small, too hard to get to, or too close to their food, too much traffic, just to name a few. General rule of thumb: if you wouldn’t want to do your business there, neither does your cat.

Being thoughtful about the litter box benefits you too, however. By keeping it tidy, you’ll avoid unnecessary messes in your home.

Looking to replace or upgrade your litter routine? Check out our lineup of litter, boxes, and scoops either in store or on our website!

06/14/2024

The threat of evacuation due to fires, or other natural disasters, is an unfortunate reality of living in the Okanagan.

We are often advised to prepare a go bag for ourselves and for our two legged family members, but we also feel that it’s pays to prepare a go bag for our pets too.

We recommend that as we get deeper into fire season that you consider packing the following items for each of your pets. Everything listed, aside from crates for large pets, can be packed into a single tote, which can then be labeled with your pets name for easy access if needed.

Food, water, and treats: pack a three day supply.

Bowls: at least one for food and one for water. You can also add bottles water.

Bedding: a blanket or some other bedding your pet is familiar with will go a long way to keeping him as calm as possible. A blanket can also serve to hold an angry cat!

Extra collar and leash: because we all lose important things sometimes, especially when it is hectic! Be sure to have proper tags and identification on the extra collar.

Kitty litter and a pan for cats, p**p bags for dogs.

Identification: make sure your identification and contact information are on both collars, on the bag, and in the bag, just to be safe. You might include a picture of you and your pet(s) together for easier visual identification.

Pet carrier/crate: depending on the size of the pet and the size of the emergency, pet carriers or crates may be invaluable. It will help keep your pet contained and controlled, especially in a vehicle.

Medications: be sure to grab any medications your pet takes regularly on the way out the door!

We sincerely hope that none of us will ever need a go bag for ourselves, our families, or our pets, but it does pay to be prepared.

06/12/2024

We know that for many of you, the wait is over, because you got hay cut and baled this past week!

If you keep horses, cattle, llamas, alpacas, sheep, or goats you know that forage is the primary staple in your animal’s diet. Now that first cut is done for the year, it’s a good time to focus on how to protect your crop so that it can safely carry your animals through the next several months.

The quality of hay is affected by moisture, temperature and time. Quality begins to deteriorate as soon as the hay is cut, and it loses quality quickly under the best of storage conditions.

Mould, bacteria and insects thrive under warm, moist conditions and consume many of the nutrients contained in hay. In addition, weather conditions and rodents can wreak havoc with stored hay.

Ideally hay is stored in a well ventilated and leak proof building where it will be protected from the elements. This hay should also be stored on pallets to protect against possible flood damage.

If necessary, hay stored outdoors should be covered by tarps or heavy plastic to prevent exposure to rain. Trees can help prevent sun damage but are not a recommended storage option.

There are many considerations that go into where to store hay. Be aware of how your storage method and placement can impact the quality and longevity of your valuable hay.

06/09/2024

Do you offer your chickens a grit supplement?

Because chickens do not have teeth, when they are foraging and pick up larger snacks, or you give them leftovers and treats, they aren’t able to chew to begin the digestive process.

This is where grit comes in! Grit is necessary for your chickens to digest anything other than feed specifically for poultry. When your chickens ingest larger food items, bugs, snacks or scraps they need grit. Grit is stored in their gizzard and when the gizzard contracts, the grit helps to crush up the food pieces making it possible for your chickens to digest their food. Chicken feed, whether crumble, textured feed, or pellet, is formulated so that they don’t need grit to digest it.

We carry grit in two sizes, 1/16” for chicks, and 3/16” for adult birds.

Grit is best offered in its own separate feeder or dish where chickens can eat as needed. Birds who free range may consume more or less grit, depending on the soil conditions where they free range.

06/06/2024

Fireworks can be lots of fun, but we should be aware fireworks are a completely foreign experience for our furry friends. Fireworks come without warning and can be very frightening. The sounds, smells and sights can be easily overwhelming for our pets and livestock.

* Keep pets inside during firework displays, and make sure to close windows and pet doors leading outside. Startled animals will seek a place to hide. This means if they manage to get outside, it can be very easy to lose them. Being inside the house will also help dull any loud noises.

* Make sure your animal is wearing its collar and ID tags. Microchipping is also recommended to ensure you can be reunited if they get lost.

* Walk your dog before it gets dark to avoid going outside once the fireworks start.

* Have a safe place for your companion animal to feel at ease, like a crate or other confinement space.

* Block out some of the flashing lights by keeping curtains closed and lights on, or by placing a blanket over your animal’s crate.

* Your furry friend may pace around, make noise or search for a place to hide. Let them be.

* If you know that your companion animal is frightened by fireworks, try to have someone at home to stay with your pet.

* Animals are far more sensitive to the sounds and smells produced by fireworks and would be much happier having a quiet night in.

For livestock, be sure to check and reinforce all fencing before firework displays. If possible, more them to an area or barn where they are farthest away from the sights, sounds, and smells of fireworks.

For all animals, never risk them hurting you, themselves, or each other. If needed, contact your veterinarian about sedation options.

06/02/2024

Look familiar?

Horses rub their tails for a variety of reasons, with the simplest reason being that they’re itchy! Read on to learn more in depth reasons and what some potential solutions are.

Firstly, look for evidence of pinworms. These parasites, which emerge from a horse’s a**s to lay eggs on the sensitive skin nearby, have made a resurgence in North America recently. The eggs trigger itchiness that helps spread them through the environment as the horse rubs against fence posts and trees. The eggs may be visible as small, white plaques around the a**s.

Next, inspect the tail itself. Separate the hairs to check the skin along the tailbone and lift it to examine the underside as well. You’re looking for anything that might cause itchiness, such as a tick bite or other irritation. Removing any ticks and using a fly spray regularly should relieve the problem. If the irritation on the skin of the tail is widespread, your horse may have contact dermatitis, consider whether you’ve used any new bathing or grooming products or whether he may have brushed up against something new in his environment. Limit his exposure to any suspected culprit and see if the tail rubbing resolves.

Finally, if the tail itself looks fine, check between the hind legs forward to the sheath or udder area. This is a prime location for tiny midges to feed, which can set off an allergic reaction known as “sweet itch.” These insects also feed along the crest, so affected horses may also rub their necks. You’ll know they are the culprits if you find inflamed, crusty skin and your horse seems exceptionally grateful when you scratch the area. Cleaning this area can be pivotal. If a horse is crusty and uncomfortable, its only option is to sit on its tail. Some mares need their teats and under the tail wiped daily.

We carry everything you need to combat tail rubbing. Visit us in store or online to browse dewormers, shampoos, fly sprays, and sheath cleaner.
