Wacky Breed Wednesday - Tarsus Catalburun (Turkish Pointer)

The Turkish Pointer is not yet a recognized breed - however breed clubs are pushing for its recognition! This is an old, old breed. With history dating all the wya back to the 15th or 16th century! They originate from the Tarsus region in Turkey. They are almost completely unknown outside of Turkey. Their origin story has a variety of different takes; so how they came to be is still up in the air.

They have a unique appearance; being one of few breeds with a completely forked nose which is believed to create greater sense of smell to assist when tracking and hunting. They are medium-large sized dogs with a deep chest and long legs. Their body type allows for them to move quickly and stealthy. They come in a variety of different colours.

They are traditionally kept as outside dogs, so they have a keen watchful nature. But are relatively quiet otherwise. They previously have been known to hunt partridge, however they recently have been recruited by police in Turkey. The Breed is close to extinction, with very few people outside of Turkey even knowing about them. Pointer clubs, and Tarsus Catalburun enthusiasts are coming together to help preserve the health and future of these dogs.

P.S The Turkish Pointer makes up for less that 0% of dog breeds in the entire world. They also have over 10 names or nicknames!

Wacky Breed Wednesday - Finnish Spitz
The Finnish Spitz has a foxy appearance. Not only do they look like one, but they also are agile, quick and light on their feet. Their colouring is called "Red & Gold" however it very much looks like a deep, fiery orange. They belong to the non-sporting group and are on the small/medium sized wise. Weighing in at 20-33lbs depending on gender, and 15.5" - 20". They have pointy ears, a small body and cute curly tail.

They're a very velcro breed and love their people. They don't enjoy spending time alone, and are known to be handler sensitive and noise sensitive. They are have a keen eye, and you can expect alert barking and a lot of other funny other noises. Despite their watchful nature, they are known for their friendly demeanour.

Their history dates back to before the 1800's. It is said that dogs similar to today's Finnish Spitz, were brought to Finland by migrating tribes from Russia. They were relied on as hunting dogs, eventually specializing in catching birds. The dogs were quickly transported all over the place, and quickly came to almost an extinction due to cross breeding. Luckily, two individuals, Hugo Roos and Hugo Sandberg were dedicated to bringing them back to life. They spent decades bringing the Finnish Spitz back to where it was, and is today. In 1920, they were introduced into England, and in 1960 they were brought into North America.

P.S the Finnish Spitz is often called a Finkie!

Whats Byproduct?
Byproduct is made up from secondary cuts containing organs, bone and blood.

Byproduct can come from a variety of sources - the number one being the left overs from the human food industry making things like chicken byproduct.

Lets look at it this way - in the wild lions bring down zebras and they go for the guts first since that's where the organs, intestines, bladder's, etc are. Its humans that want the flank and shoulders, we want the muscle meat. But wild life wants the organs. The predators only have moments to get in and out with the most "food" they can get. The organs hold the most quality nutrients.

Meat Meal Facts

Meat Meal
What is it? Meal is an ingredient that has been ground or dried for use.
How is it made? Companies cook down whole meat until the moisture content is removed and it is more of a powder like meat. By weight, there is more protein in meat meal compared to whole meal.
Why is it in food?
- The process of breaking the protein down to meal removes a lot of the moisture in dog food - which is the culprit of creating an environment for mold and bacteria making kibble foods spoil quick.
- Distribution! The powder like meal makes sure that the nutrients are evenly spread out and not clumped to one section of the bag.
Good ✅
Meat Meal is not bad - in fact by weight there is more protein content in meal than whole meats! That being said when shopping make sure the protein source is listed (chicken meal, fish meal, lamb meal) and doesn't just say meat meal, poultry meal. The vague listing, can sometimes mean that companies are hiding where their meat really comes from!

looking at the back of food bags can be intimidating, theres lots of different ingredients - some even too complicated to attempt to pronounce.

A big no-no when it comes to processed dog or cat food is the 4-D ingredients. Although its "taboo", lots of companies still incorporate 4-D ingredients. 4-D stands for dead, dying, decaying and diseased animals.

some of these meats, can contain cancerous tumours, harmful chemicals, bacteria, worms and other agents that may play a toll on your dogs health.

Many companies have begun to be more transparent, sharing their manufacturing process and ethics when it comes to creating a bag of kibble. Stay educated on the brands your buying, and when in doubt ask!

Wacky Breed Wednesday - Kuvasz

The Kuvasz is known as the companion of kings and guardian of flocks! They are large sized dogs standing at 26" - 30", and weigh 70-110lbs depending on their gender. They are beautiful, thick coated white dogs.

They are livestock guardian dogs, who often are used to protect goats, chicken, and other livestock animals. Despite their large size they are quick on their feet, and nimble footed. As livestock guardian dogs, they naturally have a suspicion of other animals and humans. However, they are extremely lovey-dovey and affectionate.

The Kuvasz stems from Central Asia, and became extremely popular in Hungary, and believed to have been bred for over 2,500 years! Not only were they guarding flock from wolves, thieves and other potential threats but they also were used to hunt large game, wardogs and even herding! They are awesome, versatile dogs, and can be referred to as gentle giants, until a threat appears.

P.S It's said that King Matthais I, who was king from 1458-1490 trusted his Kuvasz more than his palace guards.
