Ever seen a gecko pulling off some gravity-defying stunts on the walls and ceiling? Move over, Spider-Man, there's a new superhero in town! Watching a lizard do its acrobatics up there can create different feelings for different folks, but one thought is the same, just how on earth does it stick to the ceiling like that?
Here’s the scientific reason why, geckos stick because each of their toes is covered in hundreds of microscopic hairs called setae. Each seta splits off into even smaller hairs called spatula. Scientists have shown that when these tiny hairs are so close to the contours of walls and ceilings, they create a force called the van der Waals force. The van der Waals force kicks in when the molecules of the geckos’ hairs and the molecules of the wall or ceiling are so close. The van der Waals force produces an electromagnetic pull between their molecules as their electrons start interacting and adjust their orbits so as not to repel each other.
Now that we've unraveled the science behind geckos' sticky powers, let's be real - geckos really are just the coolest reptiles around!
Are you ready for fall? We’ve got lots of exciting arrivals on the horizon in the nursery, stay tuned!
🥳

How important is GH & KH and just what exactly are they?
GH stands for General Hardness and is the measure of salts that are dissolved in your tank water, in particular calcium and magnesium. A low GH means soft water and a high GH means hard water. KH stands for Carbonate Hardness which is the measure of carbonates and bicarbonates dissolved in water.
Regulating GH is important for osmoregulation. Osmoregulation is the fish version of breathing; it is the process by which they balance salts and water on the inside and outside their body. Imbalances in this process can cause your fish to become sick or even die. Your GH can be depleted by plants and fish using up trace minerals, and your GH can be too high by water evaporation and no water changes. To lower your GH try adding peat moss to your filter and perform a water change.
KH is equally as important as it protects and stabilizes your pH. KH helps prevent acids (these are wastes from your fish, plant leaves and left-over food) from interfering with pH and causing rapid pH changes. Rapid pH changes can be very harmful to fish and even kill them. Keeping KH at good levels is critical. You can raise your KH with regular water changes and if you need to lower or raise it more it you can add KH buffers.

Late August is a perfect time to plant your brassica veggies. Brassica veggies include bok choy, cabbage, collards, mustard greens, turnips, and brussels sprouts.
Here are some tips for planting.
• Give them plenty of nitrogen
• Work up to 50cm of soil as brassicas love to grow deep roots
• Keep your soil above pH of 6.5
• Protect delicate greens from wind
• Feed and water as needed, if plants show any yellow or purple leaves, feed with a liquid nitrogen
• Keep them w**d and pest free
Eating brassica every day can give you these amazing health benefits as well!
• Help lower blood pressure
• Reduce cardiovascular risk
• High in Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, beta carotene, carotenoids, and fibre.
Every bite is a health boost!
We can’t be the only ones who do this! If only our animals could tell us what they’re thinking🥲

Planting Tips! Break apart your bulbs and always plant tips up! Plant 4 – 8” apart and 2” deep. Use bone meal and an all-purpose fertilizer (4-4-4) when planting. Use soil amenders such as azomite, worm castings, seasoil, and compost with your potting mix. Cover with mulch. Remove mulch in spring when the last frost has passed. In early spring top dress again with your amended soil, worm castings, seasoil and compost. Add bone meal and your 4-4-4 fertilizer to your top dress. Keep all weeds away! Your garlic needs every bit of nutrition it can. Water every 3 – 4 days or more if very dry. #qathet #bonemeal #growingfoodisfun #growingfood #garlic #growingfoodyoulove #gardeningmadeeasy #gardening #gardeninglove #gardeningtips #gardeningisfun #Veggies #sunshinecoastbccanada #powellriverbc #growyourownfood #powellriver
Platy fish are the cool dudes of the aquarium world! With their flashy colors and funky names like Wagtail, Tuxedo, Rainbow, Hi-Fin, and Mickey Mouse, there's a platy for every fish lover out there. Hailing from Central America and Mexico, platy fish are quite the social butterflies! While they can thrive solo, they truly shine in a gang of five or more. Pro tip: recruit more female fish to the squad to avoid any dude drama among the males! With a bustling school of platies, get ready for some baby boom action! These livebearers skip the egg stage and pop out cute little fry. If you want to keep them safe in the main tank, make sure there's enough plant cover for them to make their hideouts. Or you can play it safe and give the mom-to-be her own special birthing suite in a separate tank. Platies embrace the bliss of underwater companionship - they're chill and love hanging out with other fishy pals like more livebearers, cory catfish, danios, and even some shrimp! Platy Info • pH – 6.5 – 7.9 • Temperature – 71 - 76°F • Grow – 2 -3” • Live – 2 -3 years • Diet – Omnivore #powellriver #powellriverbc #aquariumfish #aquariumlife #aquariumhobby #aquariumsofinstagram #aquariums #aquarium #fishtank #fishofinstagram #platyfish

We have some wonderful cherry trees! Pick them up now for next spring planting. Here is all you need to know to plant your potted cherry tree next spring. Plant in early spring in well-draining soil. Dig your hole 3x larger than the potted to allow the roots to spread out. Top dress with compost and later after your cherry has fruited use a tree fruit blend of fertilizer. Prune only in late winter with the tree is dormant, trim back the canopy to open the center, each cut should be made about ¼ inch above an outward facing bud. Do I need 2 trees for pollination? Yes, for sweet cherries will need 2 compatible species while tart and flowering cherry trees are self-pollinating. Visit our nursery to see all the different cherry trees and pick out your favorites! #trees #tree #qathet #fruittreesofinstagram #fruittrees #cherrytree #cherries #growingfoodyoulove #growingfoodisfun #growingfood #gardening #gardeninglove #powellriverbc #powellriver

Pollinator plants are so essential to any garden. Pollinators such as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and even bats and ants are our main pollinators. These amazing animals move from plant to plant, attracted by the nectar produced, collecting the pollen from each plant, and moving it from one plant to another. This pollen when delivered will begin the fertilization process and allow seeds to form which allows the plant to reproduce itself. A miracle of nature! Pollinator plants we love to plant! Annuals • Sunflower • Zinnia • Milkweed • Borage • Marigold • Verbena • Calendula • Cosmos • Heliotropism • Agastache • Salvia • Nasturtium Perennials • Echinacea • Nepeta • Golden Rod • Lavender • Aster • Oregano • Rosemary • Scabiosa • Liatris • Bee Balm, Monarda • Mint • Sage • Columbine • Stonecrop • Honeysuckle • Lupine • Foxglove • Even Dandelions! #bees #pollinatorsgarden #pollinatorsmatter #pollinators #plantslover #plants #perennial #perennials #perennialplants #perennialgarden #qathet #gardeningmadeeasy #gardening #gardeninglove #gardeningtips #gardeningisfun #flowers #flowersofinstagram #sunshinecoastbccanada #powellriverbc #powellriver

We saw these busy bees working hard to collect pollen from these gorgeous blooming Creeping Thyme plants! Here are some handy tips to attract more pollinators to your garden! • Plant a variety of colours o Different pollinators are attracted to different colours • Plant your perennials and annuals in large clumps with mixed species. o Mixing different plants together ensures you have the greatest chance of overall pollination. • Let herbs bloom o Leave some herbs to bloom, these plants are a bounty to a pollinator. • Add water and shelter o Pollinators need places to live and raise the next generation. Create safe homes for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and bats. • Use pesticides at an absolute minimum or not at all. o Unchecked pesticide use can be devastating to pollinators. o Bee organic 😊 • Plan for all seasons o Give pollinators as much food as possible so they can eat their fill and be ready for the winter hibernation. • Plant early pollinators o Oregon grapes, forsythia, pieris jap., fruit trees, elderberries, and ninebark. • Use native plants in your garden o Native plants will attract your local pollinators! Give them what they most love to eat and they will help you to produce more food for you and your family! #blooming #perennialgarden #qathet #growingfoodyoulove #gardening #gardeninglove #gardeningtips #gardeningisfun #flowers #flowersofinstagram #sunshinecoastbccanada #powellriverbc #growyourownfood #pollinators #pollinatorsmatter #pollinatorsgarden #bees #creepingthyme

We are coming up to the perfect time to plant roses. It is important to wait until at least 2 weeks after the last frost to ensure there is no more frost, and to allow time for the soil to warm slightly. Locate your roses where they will receive a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight. Plant them in loose, loamy, sandy soil with a pH of 6.0 – 6.9. Soak bare rose roots in a bucket of water for 8-12 hours before planting. Prune back to 3-5 buds per cane and remove anything smaller than a pencil. Add compost and aged manure to your planting hole and give plenty of water after planting. Maintenance and Ongoing Care • Deadhead old blooms to encourage new growth. • Remove any wet or soggy blooms to prevent rot. • Remove all debris from the base of your roses to help reduce the chances of disease and insects. • Stop deadheading 3-4 weeks before the 1st anticipated frost of the year to prevent any new growth and then frost damage. • Water regularly. Do not allow your roses to dry out in summer. • When mulching leave 1” of space around the base of the stem. • Fertilize once per month from April to July with rose fertilizer. • For May and June add magnesium sulfate. Pruning Tips • Use a clean and sharp tool only. • Cut at a 45° angle, approximately ¼” above an outward facing bud. • Prune in Spring your hybrid and Floribunda roses before they begin to turn green. • Cut back old wood 30-40% before new growth begins. • Prune in late Summer all your climbing and Rambling roses. #powellriver #powellriverlife #powellriverbc #gardeningtips #gardeninglove #gardeningisfun #qathetregionaldistrict #qathet #qathetregion #roses #roses🌹 #roseslover
