• A huge thank you to for Spaying It Forward! This month, Metro paid for Shyla’s spay surgery as part of their ongoing mission to foster responsible pet guardianship. ⁠

Shyla and her 4 siblings were living under a shed when they were spotted by a concerned citizen who contacted RCR for help. By the time they were rescued, they had developed a natural fear of people and they needed to be socialized by their foster family so that they could be placed for adoption. Sweet Shyla is now ready for a forever home of her own! ⁠

Shyla comes by her name honestly but has adapted very nicely to the comforts of love, regular meals and a cozy bed. Do not mistake Shyla’s shyness with fear, she is very outgoing and playful. She loves to play with her siblings and the resident cats along with any toy given to her. Shyla is a voracious eater and will beat her brothers to the bowl every time! It will take some time for her to warm up to new people and to come to your lap on her own, but once she does the reward is worth the patience. Shyla would do best in a quieter home with other animals and would love to be adopted with one of her brothers (Timone, Patch, Felix and Blaze).⁠

Novel proteins - what does this mean?

A novel protein simply means ‘new protein’. This also means that your dog or cat is not likely to have come across it before in their day to day diet.
Giving your pet a novel protein can help with allergies or sensitivities, which may present as itchy or irritated skin.
The theory behind feeding a novel protein is that because there isn’t previous exposure to them, the likelihood of them developing a sensitivity to them is significantly reduced - however not impossible.

Examples of a novel protein:

Bones are a good source of minerals and other nutrients and help satisfy your dog’s appetite. Chewing stimulates saliva enzymes and helps prevent plaque buildup on teeth and gum disease.

Tips for Feeding Raw Bones:
Choose an appropriate size bone for your dog. Be sure to remove bones that start to crack or chip due to aggressive chewing. Small bones are not appropriate for aggressive chewers.

Always supervise a dog when it is chewing on a raw bone. Dogs should be kept in a confined and monitored space and the bone should be removed if large chunks are bitten off or the dog appears in distress in any way.
