It's important to keep an eye out for foxtails this summer. These seemingly harmless plants can pose a serious threat to our furry friends! As our big buddy here found out, after eating some pesky plants.

Here’s why: Foxtails have barbed seeds that can embed themselves in your pet's fur, ears, eyes, nose, or paws. Once lodged, they can migrate deeper into tissues, causing infections and discomfort. If not promptly removed, foxtails can lead to infections, abscesses. They're not just a nuisance but a potential health hazard.

Our handsome friend here was sedated to have foxtails removed from his tonsillar crypts, his owner noted that he'd been gagging, gulping and coughing which are a telltale sign of foxtails. Luckily for him his owner was vigilant and called us as soon as she saw the symptoms!

Preventive Measures: Keep your yard clear of foxtails, and consider protective gear like booties or hats for pets who spend a lot of time outdoors. Regular grooming can also help catch foxtails before they cause harm. Veterinary clinics report thousands of cases each year related to foxtail injuries in pets!

✨ Reminder: We are closed Monday July 1st for the long weekend ✨

In other news, look at our new clinic chickens! 🐓we ask at this time that you do not let your dogs approach the Hen house as they are babies and settling in! We joked about Dr Barrett becoming a chicken vet a couple years ago on April fools day and apparently it’s coming true 😉

☀️ Good morning from Barrett Vet!

🐾 Today might be sunny, but did you know ticks love this weather too? As temperatures rise across Canada, ticks become more active, posing a threat to our furry friends. Here are some tick facts to keep in mind:

🌿 Canada is home to several species of ticks, including the black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis), which can transmit Lyme disease.
🌿 Ticks are most active in spring and summer when temperatures range between 4°C to 24°C.
🌿 They latch onto animals (and humans) by questing—perching on tall grasses and shrubs, waiting to latch onto a passing host.
🌿 Tick bites can lead to serious illnesses, so prevention is key!

Ensure your pets are protected with regular check-ups and tick preventatives. Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine responsibly! ☀️🐶

Over the last couple of weeks we've had an increased amount of pets showing up late for their appointments! Arriving late can create a domino effect, impacting the appointments scheduled after yours. By being punctual, you're not only showing respect for our team but also for fellow pet parents who are waiting patiently for their turn.

Arriving just five minutes early gives our awesome support team a chance to get everything ready, like checking your pup's weight and any important history, before you meet the vet. Your 30-minute appointment starts right on time, so if you're running late, it nibbles away at that precious time together.

If you're running behind, just ring us up! Depending on the delay, we might need to reschedule. Just like any doctor's office, there's a chance of a wait due to emergencies or unexpected hiccups. We appreciate everyone helping keep things running smoothly!

Important news from the CDC:

Starting on August 1, all dogs entering the U.S. (including those that left the U.S. and are returning, and regardless of the country they are coming from) must be:
• healthy upon arrival
• at least 6 months of age
• microchipped
• accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form receipt and required vaccination and veterinary documents.

Additional requirements may apply depending on where the dog has been in the last 6 months and whether or not the dog was vaccinated in the United States.

Use CDC’s Q&A tool (the CDC “DogBot”) to determine what rules apply to your dog: https://bit.ly/2rww2bq

🚨 We need your help!!! 🚨

Pogo is declining very quickly in shelter and needs your help fast! We are looking for an experienced adopter or foster, who can take Pogo into their home asap! Please consider adopting this handsome boy or sharing this post to help Pogo find his forever home. 🏘️💕

Pogo is shown to be an exceptionally loyal, cuddly companion! One of his favourite places to be is curled up next to his person getting plenty of pets and cuddles. As an energetic dog, Pogo would love plenty of enrichment, exercise, and fun training sessions! He made friends with Jingle and Sweet Pea at the shelter, so he could potentially do well with another dog in the home 🐶. Our team has been working with him on his reactivity to people and will need further training to help him feel comfortable in new environments. Training classes and post-adoption consultation are included with your adoption package!

Please book an adoption appointment to apply to foster Pogo today! 🚨🚨🚨 https://www.calgaryhumane.ca/animals/animal-listings/dog-listings/?id=2000102131

Our first week at the new clinic is coming to an end and wow, what a week! We’ve had growing pains, so many smiles and started making new memories already 🥰

Here’s a few of our patients from this week, featuring our first patient of the week Cici the lovely black lab, Calvin who finds the new kennels perfect for soliciting pets (don’t worry he was swiftly petted straight after), Higgins relaxing before surgery and Tease using the built in whippet nose holes to rest her snoot!
