On Friday, I had the privilege of going to Smoky Lake to present a seminar on dog bite prevention to the town’s first responders and utility workers. I took along my sister’s dog to demonstrate as Nash is too reactive to handle a room full of people.

Can you spot our Nash in the SBPA San Carlos 2024 calendar? We refer to him now as “Mr. March.”

SBPA San Carlos is a group of volunteers who help bring in dogs and cats for a free spay and neuter. The vets are top notch and donate their time for the surgeries. The clinic runs one weekend a month and last year over 4000 animals were brought in. Strathcona County is going to a name and phone number tag instead of a county license. The new requirements begin April 1st and fines for non compliance are going up. I’d been intending to get Nash a tag and this gave me the push to get it done. We got ours from an Amazon seller It’s very well made.

Our next set of Not so basic Obedience is starting soon!

This class is all about impulse control. We will focus on behaviours we want to see for students interested in more advanced level training, CGN, and therapy streams of dog training. The ability for our dog to remain focused in high level distraction, how to settle, duration stays with handlers out of sight, dropping toys and food, and leash skills.

This is a great class to take for students that have completed Puppy Steps Level 3, First Timers, or Basic Obedience and are looking for more of a challenge geared towards impulse control and focus on handlers.

To guarantee your spot in class, payment must be received within 48 hours of booking. Payment can be made in person, by phone with a credit card, or by e-transfer to [email protected] (must include GST). The total cost of this class including GST is $241.50

Today, Randy is at the U of A Hospital for his Gamma Knife treatment. I am taking advantage of the long day sitting and waiting, and just completed one of my courses. I've been studying reactivity and I have several new tools to add to my arsenal of techniques for helping our stressed-out, fearful and reactive dogs. I'm also taking courses in Reactivity in Herding Breeds and Complex Reactivity. Onward and upward.
PS: Randy is doing well so far.

Each graduate laid a track for their dog, dropping something that was scented of them in the middle of the track. Then we played track your human. The dogs did not watch the track being laid. This pup gave the best smiles when she found the scent and her human. We will be running Intro to Scent Detection again in January at Canine Addiction. Please sign up directly with them!

In this video, our graduate is giving us a great “down” as her main indicator. The scent is hidden under the frisbee so she has to use her nose, not her eyes.

Yesterday’s scent class graduates. I am going to post three videos, one for each grad. This pup is searching for our class scent and indicating when it is found. He has developed a great nose indication and I love his little tail wag when he finds the scent.

Are you looking for a fun, calming, indoor activity this winter? Intro to Scent Detection begins Saturday, October 28 at 11:30 AM. In this class, we will learn the amazing capacity a dog's nose has for odours. Each participant will learn how to set up a scent hide without contamination, how to teach your dog to indicate when they have found the scent, and lots of different ways to hide scent and create fun activities for your dog. We will be teaching the dogs to identify a Cedarwood scent and tell us when they find it.
Would you like your dog to follow a scent trail to find you in a game of scent hide-and-seek? Can they figure out which of the identical 'squirrel hides' contain a unique scent and retrieve it for you? Please join us for scent class and find out! Booking is through the Paw partner app.

If you're looking for a new activity to try with your dog, scent work may be the one for you! This unique dog sport is an accessible alternative to dog sports like agility and dock diving. Best of all, any dog—regardless of age, breed, or size—can do scent work!

This introductory class will teach the basics of nose work by going over the types of scents available, the beginning of searching through items, and how to get your dog to indicate on a scent.

Nose work is one of the best types of mental enrichment for your dog and tires them out at the same time.

Classes run for 6 weeks, one day per week.

My Tuesday morning puppy class at Canine Addiction. Today we were working on settling down after a rambunctious play, as well as learning about how to stop jumping and counter surfing, puppy play styles, barrier frustration and much more.
