🚨We are in the throes of summer sea turtle season in NY, and want to remind you that even though you rarely see them, these incredible reptiles are in our waters. 🚨

So far in July, our team has responded to 8 deceased sea turtles, with 6 of them having evidence of human interaction-- that amounts to a staggering 75% of these animals suffering from negative consequences of human activity. Findings have revealed four loggerhead sea turtles with evidence of vessel strike, one loggerhead with evidence of entanglement, and one Kemp's ridley that had ingested a piece of soft plastic.

We want to remind the public of a few important safety tips for sharing our ocean spaces with these majestic animals this summer:

🛥️Go slow and be on the lookout for sea turtles while boating. If you encounter a sea turtle that is closer than 50 yards while on the water, put your engine in neutral to avoid injury. (Check out NOAA's "Go Slow Sea Turtles Below" campaign: https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/feature-story/what-can-you-do-save-sea-turtles)
🥤Avoid single-use plastic items such as plastic water bottles, plastic bags, and plastic straws.
🎣Properly dispose of all fishing gear, including traps, pots, and fishing line.
🎣Use barbless circle hooks to reduce the likelihood of serious injury in the case of ingestion.
🐢If you see a sea turtle in the area, wait to cast your line or change fishing locations, especially if you notice the turtle showing interest in your bait or catch.
📱If you see an entangled or injured sea turtle, do not try to help the sea turtle on your own. Immediately call the NYS Stranding Hotline, 631-369-9829, to report it. Calling our hotline is the best way to make sure our team, which consists of trained responders, knows about it and can take appropriate action.

"Sq**rt" is lost in the Mt. Pearl area, see photo. Report any turtle sightings immediately. Drivers should USE EXTREME CAUTION while driving near rivers/waters in Mt. Pearl. Sq**rt appears to be an older turtle, no age provided. Apprehend animal ONLY if safe to do so and call us immediately.

PSA: STOP LEAVING YOUR TURTLES OUTSIDE UNATTENDED!!! Even the most secure environments may have escapes that YOU HUMANS may not notice. Be vigilant, be present.
