October 13-19, 2024 is National Veterinary Technician Week in Missouri.
πŸ¦’πŸπŸ¦ˆπŸ¦œπŸ¦ŽπŸ–πŸ‡πŸ«πŸ¦’πŸ•·πŸ

This week, we will be providing some infographics about what vet techs are and what we do. To kick off NVTW, here is a BRIEF list of all of the duties a vet tech can do.

As a reminder, National Veterinary Technician Week should be reserved for celebrating veterinary technicians only, as other support staff have their own holidays and should be highlighted and celebrated individually. Please reconsider lumping everyone together for "staff appreciation week".

National Veterinary Technicians Week was started by the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) in 1993 and is celebrated the third week in October.

Hey there, fellow pet lovers! 🐢🐱 With everyone's cell phones, radios, and TVs about to give off a very loud noise at 12:55pm we thought we'd take the hint and talk about emergency preparedness for our furry family members. Check out this tips to make sure your pets are covered too! πŸš‘

1. Accessibility is Key: Keep your pet's emergency supplies in heavy-duty, waterproof containers. Trust us, you don't want soggy kibble when the going gets tough! Store paperwork and medications in sealed plastic bags for extra protection. πŸ“¦πŸ’§

2. Gear Up: Ensure your furry friend has a well-fitting collar with an up-to-date ID tag, sturdy leash, and harness, or a reliable carrier. Safety first, fur-riends! 🐾

3. Food and Water: Stock up on at least 72 hours' worth of food and water for your pet. Don't forget the bowls, litter, litter tray, can opener for canned food, and cleanup supplies. Let's keep those tails wagging and whiskers purring, even in the face of adversity! πŸ½οΈπŸ’§

4. Medication Matters: Have enough medication for your pet to last at least 72 hours, but ideally a week. Don't leave home without copies of important medical records and vaccination certificates (hint: you can access all of your vaccine records through our app!) It's better to be over-prepared than under-prepared, right? πŸ’ŠπŸ“‹

5. First Aid for Furry Friends: A pet first aid kit is a must-have for any emergency situation. Be ready to patch up those little scrapes and bumps with love and care. 🩹❀️

6. Capture the Moment: Snap a photo of you with your pet. It'll be invaluable if your furry friend gets lost during an emergency. And if your pet is microchipped, keep that information handyβ€”it's a lifesaver! πŸ“ΈπŸ”

7. Plan Ahead: Write down feeding schedules, medical conditions, behavior triggers, and your veterinarian's contact information. It'll come in handy if you need to foster or board your pets during an evacuation. Preparation is the name of the game! πŸ“πŸ₯

8. Comfort Counts: Don't forget to pack your pet's favorite bed and toys if they're easily transportable. A little comfort goes a long way during stressful times. πŸ›οΈπŸŽΎ

9. Have a Plan: Lastly, make sure you have a plan in place for when you have to leave your home. Research pet-friendly hotels and shelters in advanceβ€”your furry friend will thank you! 🏨🐾

Did you know that ticks can become active as soon as the weather hits 0Β°C? Even though it might feel chilly outside, these pesky parasites are still lurking around! It's important to remember that parasites are not just limited to the outdoors. They can hitch a ride indoors on your pets, shoes, or clothing, and can even sneak inside through open doors or windows!

To ensure the best protection for you and your furry friends, make sure to keep them up to date with a monthly parasiticide. Whether you have an indoor kitty who loves lounging by the window, a playful pup who puts everything in their mouth, or a senior dog who enjoys exploring the yard, every pet is at risk of contracting parasites!

At Southport, we recommend prescription parasiticides, as they offer the most effective and reliable protection. Remember, your pet needs to be up to date within the year to have them prescribed. While over-the-counter products may provide some protection, they still leave your pet at risk.
So why not sleep better at night knowing you're not sharing your bed with any unwanted parasites?

Although these puppies are SO cute, one isn't like the other, can you guess who?

If you guessed Finnigan, you're absolutely right! While all the puppies enjoy typical puppy activities and treats, Finnigan has a unique habit of eating his own p**p. This behavior is known as coprophagia, and it can occur in animals for various reasons.

If your dog also experiences this behavior, don't worry! We have a solution for you. In our clinic, we carry a product called For-Bid, which is an over-the-counter powder that can be fed to your pet. It helps deter them from wanting to consume their own stool. However, it's important to book an appointment with a veterinarian to determine if For-Bid is the best option for your pet. Coprophagia can be caused by factors such as lack of nutrients, boredom, underlying health issues, or parasites.

So, if you're concerned about your dog's coprophagia, feel free to call us or use our app to schedule a visit. We're here to help you and your furry friend! 🐢

Happy Veterinary Receptionist Week! πŸŽ‰πŸΎ At Southport, we appreciate our incredible reception team every single day, but during the last week of April, we go all out to show them just how much they mean to us! Our reception team, also known as CSRs or Customer Service Representatives, are the backbone of our clinic. They do so much more than just answering phones and scheduling appointments. They bring kindness, compassion, and a helping hand to every interaction. And let's not forget about our vet assistants who play a role on our CSR team- they deserve recognition too! They play a crucial role in keeping things running smoothly. So, whether you're picking up an order, visiting the vet, or giving us a call, take a moment to thank our amazing team for everything they do! πŸ™ŒπŸ‘
