Capturing these medicines as fresh as possible with a little tincture making. The immune boosting properties of echinacea is most potent in the roots, but the leaves and the flowers contain some magic too. I’m chopping these up and will add the roots later in the fall when they’re ready to harvest. Where you get your medicine matters ♥️

Change! There’s been a lot of it this spring including a surprise location shift. Long story short, I have a new home for my plants in Surrey on some beautiful, well-cared for farm land with some lovely people who put a lot of their hearts into growing. Moving a garden isn’t the easiest thing to do, but like us- plants are resilient and adaptable. The herbs are putting down roots in their new digs and I’ll have lots of herb starts ready for your home garden

Vision boards. I’ll admit, I struggle with the idea sometimes. But it’s really hard to drive forward when you don’t know which direction you’re going. Starting to get seeds organized and plans underway. I’m curious what you are growing this year- literally and symbolically!

Do you ever find that there are certain plants that just catch your eye and keep getting your attention? It's Goldenrod for me at the moment. These babies are practically glowing right now and it’s this type of intuitive reaction that I like to follow in harvesting and medicine making. Not that everything that catches your eye needs to be harvested, but sometimes following an impulse can be exactly what you need. When you harvest fresh herbs for medicine you want to capture them at their peak - when they are glowing and vivacious - and then make them into medicine at that point. Come join me Saturday to learn how to make your own tinctures with fresh plants! Link in bio.

There are many ways to capture the goodness of medicinal herbs. Alcohol is one way and it does the job of extraction really well. It’s also stable, and preserves plants for a long time. Although you take a fairly small amount of alcohol-based tinctures at a time, alcohol tinctures are NOT for everyone. Vinegar, glycerirn, honey, wine, and water can also do the job and for some people and some plants - they can deliver the benefits of the herbs to those that can’t use alcohol. Those solvents have their individual benefits, too. My kids really don’t like alcohol tinctures, but glycerties are a little more palatable. Come next Saturday Aug 21 and to learn more about making your own kitchen medicines and choices you can make to customize. Workshop link in bio.

So what is a tincture? It’s an extraction of a herb using a solvent - usually alcohol. - but you can use other solvents, too An alcohol based tincture can last for years and alcohol is very effective at capturing the constituents in most herbs. A tincture is an easy format to use an herb since you can store them easily and carry a little bottle with you, drop it into water, and bam - the vibrancy of your beautiful plants become available to you when you need them down the road. There are some tinctures that I make every year because I use them every year. This is a Hawthorn tincture from years past that I love that uses the flower, leaves, and berries. It’s delicious and taking a dropperful daily is something I do for my heart health. I always prepare tinctures for immunity, cough and cold relief, and relaxation/stress annually because that’s what I mostly use.
