Would like to thank our gallop gal Azaria for getting on him e every day, and Rob for being the assistant trainer and doing a fabulous job with him; unfortunately he was claimed so it was a great business move for us, but we miss him already 🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇

1967 MUSTANG CAR FOR A RACEHORSE. NOW THAT'S HORSE TRADING
Owner/trainer Julie Wicks is one of many horsemen who rarely gets a lot of exposure at Hastings Racecourse but it doesn’t mean there isn’t a good story to tell.
Born in Liverpool, England to parents involved in horse racing, after five years of working in the family business she headed to New York at the age of 16 where she worked as a nanny and later a legal secretary.
After deciding to branch out on her own, she went to work for the late Ron Principe. “I started exercising horses for him,” Wicks says, “and he eventually suggested I apply for my assistant trainers licence and I passed. It was the start of the 2015 season when became ill. He later signed his horses over to me and when he passed away, they were left in his will for me.”
Among the horses in his stable she inherited was Principe’s Herbie, an 8-year-old.
“It’s an unusual story in itself how Ron bought him,” Wicks said. “He liked Herbie and he did some horse trading with the breeder. Ron had a 1967 Mustang that the breeder liked. They negotiated a deal where Ron got the horse for the car. Principe’s Herbie went on to win five races and earned over $70,000.”
As for how much one horse can affect a person, Wicks says: “Herbie has been extra special in my life. He brought me a lot of treasured memories. He was the first horse I ever took to the paddock that won. I received my exercise licence riding him and also won my first race as an assistant trainer and then as a trainer.”

Herbie appeared to teach Wicks well. Saturday she saddled Omega Victory to win the third race. On Monday, Principe’s Herbie ran his last race. The next day Wicks sent him to the farm where he is now living the life he deserves.

THINKING OUT LOUD: A shout-out to one of B.C.’s all-time great trainers and certainly one of my favourites, Troy Taylor. ­He’s now enjoying retirement and deservedly so among some of his top winners were Sorryaboutnothing (2016 BC Derby), Commander (2013 and 2012 BC Premiers), Sir Gallovic (2007 BC Premiers) and Holy Nova (2009 Ballerina).
WAYNE’S WORLD: “The jockeys who are ahead of my rider in the standings are in their prime,” says agent Wayne Snow of jockey Silvino Morales. “But my guy is young and just starting out. He’ll be in their company soon.”
NOTES ON A PROGRAM: Live racing resumes at Hastings on Saturday and Sunday with start times at 1:50 p.m.

Our beautiful mare delivered a healthy 100 pound plus C**t on March 27th! We had to pull him out as mare was suffering from Dystocia (difficult birth) but all is well! Coachella & Woody are both in impeccable health 💜 💙
