Plus when we buy second hand supplies or take in surrendered hammies, extras sometimes come with! And we find a use for everything ☺️

I had to trim Pippa’s nails and I think she was a lil traumatized.. But I’m sorry it was cute and also slightly traumatizing for me when she “played dead” after and wouldn’t move.

This lil lady has the cutest lil face 🥰

We are giving her a liiiiittle bit longer, hoping to get her more used to hands in her cage. She’s not a fan of it, but when scooped by other items it’s not so bad and she’s happy to adventure with you!

She doesn’t bite, but she is jumpy and nervous.

Maze took a bit with this too but is now more than happy to crawl right onto our hands or just be picked up.

I had to clip both of their nails since they were quite long, and I was amazed at how good they were! I don’t know if it is a Robo thing as they’re the first I have worked with. No other fosters have been so easy to scruff and get to lay still!

Something that has always interested me is wondering, “what does life look like from an animals POV?”

The interesting thing about rabbits is that they cannot see red. Unlike humans, rabbits only have two cones in their eyes. Anything not green or blue is perceived as gray since their two cones cannot absorb any other colors.

Rabbits have more rods than people do though, which allows them better vision when it’s both dusk and dark outside.

Since rabbits are dichromatic and can only see two colors, it’s safe to say that adding blue and green elements in their enclosure would definitely spruce it up for your bun!

Are bunnies starter pets? Recently we got several applications which said “a rabbit will be a great starter pet” for their kids. So we thought we’d briefly explain.

No, they are not starter pets, and here’s why:

1. Rabbits live 8-12 years
2. 80% of unfixed females get uterine cancer
3. Rabbits are classified as exotic animals due to the sensitivity of their G.I tract
4. Cages, bottles, and most pet store treats are actually improper or unsafe for rabbits
5. They require hours of socialization or else become bunstructive
6. Bunnies can spray p*e
7. They bite to deglove
8. They are prey animals so do not enjoy being held or picked up
9. Exotic veterinarians have high vet fees

This is not to say that rabbits don’t make great companions…they do. They’re just not starter pets and not pets for children unless an adult is the primary caretaker.

The homes that some hammies come to us in are so heartbreaking sometimes. We do not blame this on the homes whatsoever, it is completely on the pet stores that refuse to listen and the put the lives of animals above money.

Viva is on hold as we allow her to get adjusted to the heaven that is 650 sq inches of space! And we will be working on getting her as comfortable with handling as we can.

Herbs and Dried Flowers for Hamsters

Dried herbs and flowers (sometimes called forage mixes) are one of the lesser talked about ways that hamsters can get enrichment. In the wild, hamsters encounter many different types of flowers and vegetation, but in captivity, they see almost no plant matter. Adding some simple flowers and herbs to your hamster’s cage can be a great way to provide enrichment for your hamster. It allows them to experience new smells and textures, they can eat some, certain herbs have medicinal properties, and it makes the cage smell a lot better.

So, what herbs are safe for hamsters?

This is a short list of herbs that are safe. This is not a complete list. Please do your own research if you want to feed your hamster a herb that is not on this list.

So, where do you get herbs for hamsters and how do you give it to them?

Most herbs can be bought at the grocery store, as long as it is herbs without additives. If you look at the ingredients, it should only say the herb. Dried flowers and petals and such can be bought at a tea place or online. You can also buy hamster herb mixes from private sellers on etsy. These usually have several different herbs combined to make an herb mix. Another way to add herbs is to use botanical hay. Botanical hay is a hay made by the company Oxbow for rabbits. It has timothy hay, chamomile, lavender, lemon balm, and clover, which are all safe for hamsters.

Most people sprinkle herbs around the cage or put it in a dish. If you sprinkle the herbs around, you allow your hamster to forage for them, and it helps make the whole cage smell better. A dish can add a pop of colour to your hamster's cage. Either are fine, it depends on personal preference.

In conclusion, herbs are a great addition to any hamster cage as they are colourful, smell nice, and provide enrichment for your hamster.

*Some herbs have different names and are listed under both names so you can reference either name, examples: coneflower/echinacea, lemon balm/melissa, calendula/marigold.
*Some herbs are not safe for pregnant or nursing mamas, such as parsley.
