Standards for the Spangled / Black Mottled Orpington Chicken are as follows: plumage black with white tips, legs and feet mottled, beak black or black and white, eyes brown, and skin white. Comb, face, earlobes, and wattles should be red.
In Europe the birds are referred to as Spangled, but the name most Americans use for this coloration is Mottled. I refer to my birds as Spangled Mottled Orpingtons so that no one gets confused. Mottled and spangled are the same colors – just different names throughout the world.

Some info on Silkies:
The Silkie (also known as the Silky or Chinese silk chicken) is a breed of chicken named for its atypically fluffy plumage, which is said to feel like silk and satin. The breed has several other unusual qualities, such as black skin and bones, blue earlobes, and five toes on each foot, whereas most chickens only have four. They are often exhibited in poultry shows, and appear in various colors. In addition to their distinctive physical characteristics, Silkies are well known for their calm, friendly temperament. It is among the most docile of poultry. Hens are also exceptionally broody, and care for young well. Though they are fair layers themselves, laying only about three eggs a week, they are commonly used to hatch eggs from other breeds and bird species due to their broody nature.
Our paint lines originally come from Master Breeder Judy Lee in Tennessee, and splash lines from a breeder in California with award winning show quality birds. Not every chick hatched will be show quality, but we base our breeding program on bettering the breed.

Just a little piece of advice and experience with how to handle your SHIPPED HATCHING eggs and my SHIPPING policy :

SHIPPING POLICY:

We cannot make any guarantees on eggs due to the shipping process and individual incubators or people deciding to put the shipped eggs under broody hens , handling the hatching eggs the wrong way etc etc . We test hatch on a very regular basis to test fertility and the eggs are no older than 4 days when shipped to you. We pack with UTMOST CARE to protect the eggs during shipping. Nevertheless due to factors beyond my control, once they leave my hands there are no guarantee’s.

ONCE RECEIVED, ADVICE:

1 : Gently unwrap the eggs from the bubble wrap /box where they were sent to you in right after you get them.
2 : Avoid tossing and turning the egg as much as you can.
3 : Place the eggs in carton eggholders to come to room temperature.
4 : Always put large ends (where the aircell is located ) up, small (pointy ) ends down
5 : Candle the eggs before you put them in the Incubator for any cracks /check the aircells etc .
6 : Leave the eggs for at least 12/24 hours (if needed ) to get to roomtemperature. When they are fresh enough you can leave them 24 hours.
7 : Put the eggs in the incubator and leave them in the upright position, large ends up.
8 : Do no turn your eggs for at least 3 days so the aircell can settle down .
9: After that you can switch the turning system on which gently turns the eggs to the left and the right .
10 : An automatic incubator will most probably turn the eggs each hour at approx 45 degrees.
11 : 7 to 10 days it is time to candle your eggs again to check for fertility. As tempting as it may be...Do NOT candle before as you can cause early death in your eggs.
12 : Get the eggs out of the incubator when they are aborted or empty.
13 : Day 18 put your eggs in the Lockdown position and candle again for correct development.
14 : Raise the humidity to 60/65 (70) % depending also on the typ of incubator and other circumstances.
15 : Do NOT OPEN the incubator anymore until the chicks are hatched . You can shrink wrap them in the eggs if you open the incubator once they have pipped.
16 : Let the chickens dry inside the incubator before you get them out and put them under a heating lamp/brooder plate.

About Ameraucana:
Ameraucanas are the perky, chubby-cheeked birds that add blue to your egg basket. They have a fascinating history. Brits found chickens that laid blue eggs in southern Chile as well as birds with several other exotic traits, and they created Araucanas, a new breed, that combined all these novelties. Everyone loved the small blue eggs, but two of the other traits ('tufted' and 'rumpless') turned out to be semi-lethals. Some American breeders crossed Araucanas with Leghorns and other productive breeds to create Ameraucanas that lay better and have 'whiskers and beard' instead of the semi-lethal genes. Since the Araucanas were so genetically mixed, and the Ameraucanas were genetically mixed, there is an amazing spectrum of colours and feather patterns in this breed. The APA chose 7 colour varieties for the purpose of show judging, but segregating the gene pool into 7 isolated pieces is not good for genetic health, and so we have crossed the colours in every generation to produce the best layers of large blue eggs. We have black and splash roos this year. A few of our hens are the classic red/gold/black that you get when you cross colours, while the others are many colours: blue, wheaten, splash, etc. and the chicks are a delightful rainbow of light, medium and dark colours.

Ameraucana hens are sweet and personable; their whiskers and beards always make me smile. They are excellent foragers and will go to great lengths to get out, explore the world and find their own food. Their small pea comb makes them very cold hardy. Although seldom, some of the hens will go broody and make great mothers! Most of the roosters from our line make good flock sires, very gentle with people but protective of the hens while foraging. Crossing Ameraucanas with breeds that lay brown eggs will produce hens that lay other egg colours: olive, khaki, etc. This is how Easter Eggers are produced!

We know that many people would prefer to buy only female chicks, but we have had very poor results from vent sexing this breed, and every sexing mistake means a female chick that was destroyed as a male, and an annoyed customer who wants to return a cockerel. So we have decided to sell Ameraucanas as straight run (unsexed) only.
