🌱 5 benefits of feeding TURMERIC 🐴

🔆Turmeric (Curcumin) is derived from the stem of a spice plant that originates from Southeast Asia. Curcumin is one of the primary active compounds found in Turmeric. The following are just a few of many benefits of adding this powerful combo to your horse’s diet!

1️⃣ Helps to maintain optimal JOINT HEALTH and function by reducing inflammation without the side effects of NSAIDS (Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs).

2️⃣ Powerful ANTI-OXIDANT protects cells from oxidative stress and neutralize harmful free radicals in the body.

3️⃣ Aids in DIGESTION, helps maintain a healthy gut lining and promote overall gut health.

4️⃣ Helps to balance glucose levels in horses with METABOLIC syndrome.

5️⃣ Encourages a healthy SKIN and COAT.

🫒 Pairing turmeric with good fats like OLIVE OIL improves bloodstream absorption due to fat solubility, making this combination highly effective for maximizing health benefits.

➕ The addition of BLACK PEPPER to turmeric and olive oil can increase absorption by 2000%, thanks to piperine, a liver metabolic enhancer, further amplifying the health benefits.

🛑 Always use caution when introducing new things to your horses diet. Gradual introduction is recommended and monitor for any changes when necessary.

HORSE TIP #98
🐴 KNOW YOUR HORSE’S VITALS 🐴

🐎 Being familiar with your horse’s vital signs is a crucial key in knowing what is normal, and what may raise concern with their health.

👇Here’s what you should know! 👇

🌡️ Temperature - 99-101.5 (37.2-38.6) degrees Fahrenheit (Celsius) Using a digital thermometer and a small amount of petroleum jelly, stand to the side of your horse carefully insert into the re**um. Be sure to sterilize afterwards. You may need to tie a string onto it so you don’t lose it. (If you know, you know) 🫢

♥️ Heart Rate - Resting rate is around 36-42 BPM (beats per minute). This will INCREASE when the horse is moving and can reach up to 120 BPM during full exercise. A FOAL’S heart rate sits much higher at 70-120 BPM.
⏰ Check rate for 15 seconds and multiply by four. If you don’t have a stethoscope, have no fear you can easily check the DIGITAL PULSE ☝️

3️⃣ areas you can find the pulse are:
➡️ Maxillary Artery (inside the jaw)
➡️ Radial Artery (inside above the knee)
➡️ Digital Artery (below the fetlock)
📝 if you suspect your horse may be harbouring an abscess, you can compare the STRENGTH of the digital artery in both front feet. A HEIGHTENED pulse could indicate PAIN and increased blood flow.

🫁 Respiration Rate - Normal breath rate at rest can be anywhere from 8-16 breaths per minute. This can be easily checked by observing your horse’s flanks or nostrils. If your horse has a respiratory condition you might notice laboured breathing or flared nostrils. Heaves and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) will exhibit these signs. In such cases, hay and air quality may be strong contributing factors. 🌾 💨

💦 Hydration - Carefully pinch a fold of skin on your horse’s neck. If the skin returns to normal, your horse is well hydrated. If the fold remains in place for longer than a few seconds your horse is likely dehydrated and/or low on electrolytes. 24/7 access to salt and water is crucial. A dehydrated equine may lead to colic or impactions in the gut. 🚨

🩸 Capillary Refill - Carefully lift your horses top lip. The gums should be pink and moist. Use your thumb to imprint the gums. The color should return within 1-2 seconds. Pale, white, dry gums are a sign of dehydration, low blood pressure, or possible heart problems.

👂 Gut Activity - BORBORYGMI is basically the term used for “normal gut sounds”. Examine the horse from the left side where the Large Intestine, the Colon and Cecum are found. Your horse should have regular sounds and movement in their stomach indicating there is active fluid and gas movements in the intestines. HYPOMOTILITY is the LACK activity in the gut. If this is the case, talk to your veterinarian.

✅ Familiarize yourself with these VITAL CHECKS. They will come in handy when you need to determine what is normal and what is NOT normal for your horse. When in doubt, always contact your veterinarian.

✏️ Write them down in your barn, your trailer and wherever else you might need them! Practice makes perfect and I hope that this post helps atleast one person today! Now get out there and check your vitals! 😊

☀️ “The future belongs to those who believe in the BEAUTY of their DREAMS.”

Eleanor Roosevelt had it right when she shared her famous quote with the world.

11 years ago, today, marks one the biggest accomplishments of my life. One that so many people strive for. Seemingly becoming more impossible as the times have changed through the decades. I am grateful I had the opportunity, work ethic and discipline to accomplish that goal. ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.

If you have a goal in mind, expect that it is already yours, and shift your MIND and DISCIPLINE accordingly. People with goals SUCCEED because they know where they are going. Regardless of the “obstacles” that may come.

OBSTACLES are set in place to prepare you for what you want. Not to punish you. How else would you be able to handle those BIG DREAMS without first being versed on how to handle DETOURS?

Dreams, if you’re lucky, will lead you on a path of self discovery that you never thought you needed. Life is short. So DREAM BIG. You never know where it will take you.

What are YOUR dreams? What are YOUR goals? Whoever you are, YOU GOT THIS.

🍑 STEWART UPDATE! 🍑

If I could give an award for a ✨GLOW UP ✨ he would be the winner! A wonderful couple made the trek from Alberta to take a look at Stewart a little while ago. They watched as I put my 6th ride on him and were thoroughly impressed. I wasn’t quite ready for it, but they loaded him up in their trailer and off he went. It was bittersweet to say the least. Recently they have updated me that,

“he is doing great and has adapted whole heartedly to living in a stable. He has gained so much confidence and is well on his way to being a well rounded mount for future mountain adventures.”

To say that I am incredibly happy for Stewart’s new life and his future is an understatement. I miss his giant nickers and his big beautiful face. I was even invited to pay him a visit when I am in the area. Which I surely will.

I love getting updates on horses that I have worked on and sent to amazing homes. It makes me heart warm and full!
I am so grateful to be able to spend so much time with the amazing horses that come into my life.

⭐️ If you’re looking for the nicest up and coming ALL AROUND horse with BRAINS and BRAWN look no further! 😍

Chicks Classy Lena - 2021 AQHA filly
“Hallie”

This mare comes from a long line of working ranch horses with 🐮 sense, a steady mind and she is built like brick 🏠 Very personable, kind and gentle as far as the Saskatchewan sunset 🌞 Throw the halter on and ride her ba****ck out into the great wide open or saddle her up and ride through a pen of 1500lb bull calves. She really is classy as a summer day is long and is honest as a good dog.

Nothing fazes this girl! She is handy and safe on the ground and would easily make a great mount for the whole family.

❄️ Baby, it’s COLD outside! ❄️

Although we try our best, it never seems like enough when the temps plunge below -30 for days on end. Here are some helpful tips to get through these cold spells!

🌾 FORAGE! Lots of hay, endless hay, to keep their digestive system moving. This is a horses main heat source!

💧 WATER! You’d be surprised how much water horses will drink in the winter. Moisture in their gut is important to prevent impactions with the increased food intake and lack of movement. Check those water sources multiple times a day if you can. A smaller hole in a completely frozen over trough will actually insulate the rest of the water, so a smaller access is better than trying to expose the entire area.

🏠 SHELTER! Horses will naturally go find a spot where there is the least amount of wind. Trees, windbreaks, sheds, etc. as long as they have something to get out of the elements.

🌡️ As tempting as it may be to bring your horse indoors to warm up or thaw out and give them a brushing, it really is best to leave them outside to avoid the FLUCTUATION in body temps and extreme air changes. Their hair is floofed to stay warm and brushing them will disrupt this.

🧥 BLANKETS. To each their own. HONESTLY. If you have the right blankets for the weather and you like to use them, use them. If you’re not a blanket person, don’t use them. It’s that simple. End of subject.

🔨 The claw of a hammer works the best for removing the built up snow in the hooves. Just a little nudge at the toe and it all comes out. While there are remedies that might help prevent the snow build up, unfortunately none have proven fully effective. It’s just inevitable for the average barefoot horse.

🛏️ Straw bedding will be luxurious for your horse if that is something that you can provide.

🐎 I don’t know who needs to hear this, but your horse doesn’t need to go out on a trail ride, doesn’t need exercise, and you don’t need to have that lesson. It’s too cold. Their muscles and joints are cold. Increased chance of injuries. This too shall pass and there is plenty of time to ride on better days.

🔥 Keep YOURSELF warm! It’s not fashion week, nobody cares how ridiculous your winter clothes are.

Stay warm and safe, everyone. And remember, we don’t have scorpions or giant spiders or anacondas hanging off our roofs.

Stewart snuck into the picture pen the other day for his first straw carpet appearance 📸

👀 LOOK at how handsome and THICKK this boy is. Rope some cows on the ranch, ride him through the mountains or hook him up to a wagon! The potential is there! Someone is going to get one HECK of a mount.

He is handled and worked with DAILY and continues to make progress. I’m glad that I took the opportunity to purchase Stewart in the Spring and train him up to this point. It’s taken a lot of time and sweat equity to get him where he’s at and I’m looking forward to seeing how he turns out in the time to come! I’ve got just 4 rides on him now and will soon be sharing his progress in video format. Stay tuned 😎

Monday food for thought from a friend…

The idea … that you have to be constantly relevant to be successful needs to end. Your wins don’t solidify your relevant status. You could be the most talented and knowledgeable person in the world, and not have a win, trophy or title to your name.

Remember that, For ALL aspects of life.
The relevance of your success or failure does NOT define you. Your titles, wins or successes do not make you. They only compliment the person you already are!

☯️ Let’s talk about ACUPRESSURE! ☯️

As a therapist, normally we are looking to fix tight or spasmed muscles. However, there are times where it seems no amount of work seems to release the muscle. In this case, we now look at the possibility that the culprit is the “opposing” muscle in a weakened state, therefore, making it seem like the muscle is tight when actually the supporting muscle is lacking and not doing it’s job.

Clear as mud, right? Lol.

“For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.”

One of the first concepts in Chinese medicine is that of UNITY. The systems of the body rely on each other to maintain homeostasis. If one part of the body is imbalanced it affects the whole body. This is why when I show up to work in your horse for the first time, I like to do a full body balance, rather than invasive focus on one issue. We go where the pain ISN’T.

The flow of energy is called “CHI” consisting of positive (Yang) and negative (Yin) that course through channels of the body called MERIDIANS. If there is a blockage in the meridian, pathological conditions may arise. By stimulating specific acupuncture points, Chi energy is balanced and re establishing homeostasis in the body.

Meridians are divided into 6 Yin and 6 Yang meridians and corresponding muscles. The Yin meridians ( Lungs, Spleen, Heart, Kidney, Pericardium and Liver) course along the inside of an extremity while the Yang meridians (Large Intestine, Stomach, Small Intestine, Bladder, Triple Heater and Gall Bladder) run along the outside. The energy exists in the meridian even though the horse doesn’t have a gall bladder. As we move along specific meridians, we can energize or de-energize acupuncture points. In the horse, the three Yin meridians of the forelimb flow from the chest to the foot where they meet the three Yang meridians and ascend to the head. The 3 Yang meridians of the hind limb start at the head and descend to the hind foot where they meet the 3 Yin meridians and flow upward to the chest where they join the 3 Yin meridians of the forelimb. This completes the cycle of energy flow in the body.

“You dont throw a whole life away just ‘cause he’s banged up a little.” 🩵

When I saw this little bay at a sale a few months ago, the deal was if he didn’t take a treat from my hand he wasn’t coming home with the me. He had no idea what cookies were, but still managed to catch a ride with me back to our farm. His soft and gentle little eyes told me this pony deserved a better life than what he was destined for.

Today we drove two and a half hours to deliver this tiny soul to one of the nicest young ladies I have ever met. At first I was sad, but knowing he is safe and ready for a great life ahead left me with feelings of joy and happiness.

And to the young lady who now has Benny, I thank you for giving him a lovely home and I can’t wait to see him turn into a little rockstar. I’ll sure miss his morning nickers. 💙

What would your life look like if FEAR was not an option? As if it didn’t even exist.

Would you take more risks?

What could you discover about yourself?

Would you let go of control?

If FAILING leads to new experiences, opportunities, happiness and success, then we need not to avoid it, but to appreciate it.

What would you do if you weren’t afraid?

SOLD
"STEWART" is a big and stout DRAFT X QUARTER HORSE GELDING, TWO years old, well handled, standing at 15.2hh. Great with his feet and for the farrier, self loads in the trailer, easy to catch, bath him, pamper him, saddle him. He likes to be out and about and doing a job, very smart, willing and athletic. Free lunges in a round pen and on a shank or lunge line, knows 'whoah' and how to change directions nicely. He can be a little nervous around new people but he warms up pretty quickly once you get to rubbing on him. You can rub all over his ears and face, pat all over him throw blankets or jackets on him, walk him over tarps and tires. Exposure to all of the ranch things; tractors, cows, bulls, dogs, etc. Goes well in a mixed herd with mares and geldings. He has been saddled a number of times, ground drove and went to work, no bucking, doesn't get nervous of the flapping saddle. He will stand quiet at a fence, he's not herdbound and has a really nice overall ground handle on him.

This is a nice type of horse and he is flashy to boot. He will make someone a real good working ranch horse to pull around any calves and a bull or two. Take him to the mountains trail riding, take him hunting, this boy will get a job done for you. He has had consistent training and handling for the past 6 months. He has not been worked hard but he knows a lot of things. He is likely to finish close to 16hh and he will have ongoing training. Sn**ch him up before he goes to the Top Gun Sale in Ponoka 2024.

Additional pictures / video for serious buyers.

I’m not usually the bragging type, but I’m big on giving credit where credit is due. Yesterday was one of those days.

I took my two year old on her first outing from home and she did not disappoint. She’s so quiet and gentle and her willingness to learn new things is unsurpassed. She’s never been worked hard, but she knows a lot of things.

Some days it’s nice to receive a little external validation, but you can’t expect it will be there from just anyone. The lack thereof does not mean anything. Give yourself the pat on the back that you deserve, because at the end of the day, that’s all that matters in this game. Focus on you and the horse 💜
