🐾💔 This Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week, let's keep our furry family members safe! 🐶🐱 Carbon monoxide is a silent killer, and our pets can show signs of poisoning before we even notice. Symptoms include weakness, vomiting, and difficulty breathing. With the colder months upon us, ensure you have a working carbon monoxide detector and get your gas appliances maintained regularly.

BC✨🐕‍🦺Meet our resilient girl, Onyx.
Onyx has overcome a difficult past and is now ready to find a loving forever home. She arrived in poor physical health and was very nervous about the world around her. Despite her past, Onyx has shown incredible strength and a desire to trust and bond with people ❤.

Our sweet girl is a gentle soul with a loving heart. While she may initially be shy or hesitant, her affectionate nature shines through once she feels safe. Onyx enjoys gentle interactions and is loving being able to discover the new world around her on walks and continual interactions with our amazing volunteers.

Onyx needs a guardian who understands that building trust takes time. Consistent, positive reinforcement will help her gain confidence. The understanding that gradual exposure to new people and environments is essential.

Four beautiful, eight-week-old pups were surrendered to one of our Animal Protection Officers on May 16, 2023. Little Raine was one of them.

The pups were not being well cared for, so after a health check at the BC SPCA Abbotsford animal centre they went into foster homes while they completed treatment for parasites, ear and eye infections, and then spayed or neutered.

❤️On June 6, 2023, Raine became Skippy Hashbrown Laing when she went home with her delighted furever family. Read about her wonderful adoption journey, presented by Royale® at https://ow.ly/Q15O50TZVKL

Horses in Canada still need your help! The bill to ban live horse export from Canada for slaughter (Bill C-355) is stalled in the Senate. This is a crucial opportunity to end the suffering horses endure during transport.

Two Animal Justice reports revealed that horses are transported for over 28 hours—exceeding the legal limit—without food, water, or rest. Between June 2023 and May 2024, 21 horses tragically died during these journeys.

Meet Aloka!❤️She was found as a stray and quickly warmed up to love in the shelter. She is very affectionate girl and will even drool at times while being pet. Her favourite past time is sitting on your lap for a good cuddle session!

Because Aloka had a rough life outdoors, she would like to be an indoor-only cat, so she can soak up all the comfort and warmth you have to offer her. She doesn't mind being around other respectful cats, so she would do well with another feline companion in the home. Learn more about this sweet girl at https://ow.ly/nIfA50TYwyk. ❤️BC SPCA Sea to Sky

❤️When Selma first arrived at our shelter, she was in poor physical health, and very nervous about the world around her. Everything was new to her, from trusting humans, to eating from proper food bowls, to going out on walks, to even just playing as any puppy should!

But thanks to the love and care she’s received, Selma has fully blossomed over her stay in shelter. She is now eager to explore the world and loves to go on long walks, but can still be fearful in new situations. She is social with other dogs in our care, and would do well in a home with another outgoing dog. However, Selma is a puppy and can be a lot of energy for older dogs who don’t appreciate her puppy antics! She has been working overtime with potty training here, but her future home should be prepared to continue this and expect an accident here and there as she adjusts to a brand new home.

Selma is looking for a special family with previous shepherd experience. She’s an exceptionally smart girl who will thrive with lots of mental stimulation, exercise, games and socialization. Although she still has much to learn and experience, her curiosity and love for treats will be great assets in her training journey.

🐾If you’re ready to provide this sweet girl with the guidance and support she needs, please stop by our West Vancouver Animal Centre from Tuesday-Sunday between 12pm-3pm, or apply online through our website! We can’t wait to see who scoops this sweet girl up! Learn more at https://ow.ly/oV8550TWC2n. | BC SPCA West Vancouver 🐾🐶

We have a heartwarming update to share ❤. Polly had a difficult start in life—her world was incredibly small before she came to us, which resulted in her being undersocialized and fearful of all the new experiences around her. She was so shut down... Polly spent a month and a half with us before being adopted into a wonderful forever home.

This is the update we received from her adopters:
"Polly has brought so much joy and energy into our family, and it's been a delight to watch her grow into her vibrant personality. Day by day, she's building her confidence and sassy attitude, charming us with her cheeky grins and playful antics. When she's not sneaking off with our shoes, Polly is slowly becoming our fearless trail companion. With Piper leading the way, she's also discovered the thrill of running along the river, a new adventure that has her wagging her tail with excitement. With each day that passes, it's clear that Polly is an irreplaceable addition to our family, adding laughter and love to every moment."

We are SO happy that Polly gets to live the rest of her life confidently along with her new BFF Piper. 🐕❤️

‼️LAST CHANCE! Humane Canada’s national petition for pet-inclusive housing closes at 7 am PST tomorrow morning 📝 Have you added your name yet?

Lack of pet-inclusive housing is a leading cause of animals being surrendered to shelters across the country. Pet-inclusive housing reduces stress and loneliness for tenants, lowers turnover rates for landlords, and enhances social connections in communities.

🍂🎃Happy Halloween! While many people love to dress up, go trick-or-treating or attend Halloween parties, it can be a tough time for our pets.

❤️Have you ever had a friend who is just sooo easy to have around that you want them to move in and stay furever? Dayna will be that kind of friend!! This sweet, sensitive girl has the very best manners and is up for any adventure. She walks beautifully on a leash, loves car rides, rarely barks and even puts herself to bed at night.

Due to the turmoil in her life, Dayna will need time and space to settle in and thrive in her furever home. She loves soft beds, a good selection of plush toys, the occasional pet and ear scratch, lots of adventurous walks, a swim in a lake or river and the company of people who love her.

Dayna will need a fenced yard where she can explore, enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, and play safely. She is making great progress on a weight-loss journey and with an active lifestyle should be back in shape in no time.

Dayna is a strong girl who can get quite excited around other animals and children. A home with no small children or other pets would be best. Learn more about sweet Dayna at https://ow.ly/urNA50TVE9t. | BC SPCA Shuswap ❤️

🎉THANK YOU🎉 for speaking up for animals! Elections are a critical time to speak up about the importance of animal welfare, and animal lovers like you did just that!

The BC SPCA asked B.C.’s political parties and candidates to include six animal welfare policies in their election platforms. We also invited B.C. voters to sign up to receive more information on our policy recommendations. More than 16,000 caring people participated in our campaign!

And politicians were listening! We’re thrilled that one major party included our call for more pet-friendly housing in their platform and several independent candidates committed to take action for animal welfare if elected.

With your ongoing support, we will continue advocating for the animals and people of this province. We look forward to working with B.C.’s new government to ensure that animal welfare remains a priority!

🍬 Excited for Halloween? 🎃
Let's celebrate but while also keeping in mind the impacts on wild animals. Here are some tips to keep wildlife safe this Halloween:

❌ Skip the fake spider webbing in trees or bushes to prevent entanglements
✔️ Compost your pumpkins in wildlife-proof ways to prevent attracting wildlife to your home and avoid causing harm. Wax, paint or other coatings are harmful to wildlife that ingest them, and pumpkin may not be appropriate for all species to eat.
❌ Avoid fireworks and loud noisemakers to prevent spooking wild animals
✔️ Turn off all your outdoor lights at the end of the night to allow animals to forage and hunt naturally
✔️ Slow down on the roads to avoid vehicle collisions with wild animals

Don’t forget to make sure no garbage or candy is left behind! Learn more about the negative effects of wildlife feeding on wild animals: https://spca.bc.ca/news/dont-feed-wildlife/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=wildlife&utm_content=2024-10-30-dont-feed-wildlife

Medical emergency update: Tweety!💛Tweety was diagnosed with pyometra, a painful and life-threatening condition where her uterus filled with pus. Emergency surgery was the only way to save Tweety's life. On top of that, she suffered from significant hair loss on her body due to a severe reaction to flea bites.

Thanks to Tweety's supporters, she received all the treatments she urgently needed. This included life-saving emergency surgery, medications, x-rays, and daily care to help her heal.

With even better news, we are happy to let you know that Tweety has found her forever home! Her family had the following to share about her:

“I was intrigued by Tweety’s story and her beautiful face. She had been through a lot. That said, I could tell that she was a gentle soul who needed me as much as I needed her. She is a very special part of our family and didn’t take long to fit right in.”

Thank you for standing in Tweety’s corner and being there for her when she needed it most. To extend your heart to an animal in need, please visit https://ow.ly/rEQy50TV0xf. ❤️
