At Pottery Road Heirloom Garden we want to make it easy for people to be as connected to their food as possible. In our small-scale nursery we grow perennial plants, shrubs, herbs and flowers for you to transplant into your own garden. Our nursery stock is sold from the farm on special plant sale days and by special order appointment – we focus on perennial edible, medicinal and insectary plants

and trees. Garlic is sold direct by special order with pick up in August. We are a small farm garden working to be part of a big change in our food production systems and encouraging people to grow some of their own food. Our natural approach to w**d and pest management includes systems of composting, mulching, cover cropping and crop rotation to manage the health of our soil and plants. In short, at Pottery Road Heirloom Garden…We Grow Good Food!

🌸Seeds are available in carport today.
🌱Last 2 photos show one of the perennial green onions I grow - this one is often called Welsh perennial green bunching onion. Photo shows it after a long thirsty summer. 😜 It gives abundant green onions every year ( a slightly thicker green onion than the Egyptian walking onions). Seed heads available today.
🌰 As well as other perennials, I have a few recently potted Hazelnut shrubs available ( shown in second picture). Great time of year for transplanting. Message me if interested. Thanks

🌱I have seeds available in the carport this week.
I don’t do seeds the “ normal” way ( I know…when have I ever done anything the normal way 😜). You will notice that some are still in pods or on seed heads - basically you will get a lot more seeds for the cost because I am not spending much time separating and cleaning. 🙂 I have not sealed the bags ir envelopes in case you want to peek in to see what you are getting.
🌸I have also been potting more perennials like lavender, feverfew, purple coneflower, etc. so message me if you are still looking for plants as I will have some available for a couple weeks. Autumn is my favourite time for transplanting! 🌸

🌸Photos to show the two colours of Hollyhock for which I will have seeds available in the autumn ( mixed).
🍅 First tomatoes ripening and the bush beans have started as well. Zucchini is in full swing. 😋 What’s ripening in your garden?
☀️I hope you are managing to find ways to enjoy your garden in this heat and that you have lots of delicious homegrown veggies on the go. 🥬

🧄A reminder to all the garlic-lovers that I didn’t grow garlic this year.🧄
☀️I have to say that I’m not missing harvesting garlic in this heat. 🥵 Instead I’ve been w**ding in the shade, mulching, snacking on jostaberries and raspberries and making “ treats” for the chooks - rye cover crop that I left to grow so they could eat the seeds and I discovered they love grated zucchini mixed with their food. 😜

💛 Rudbeckia & Echinacea flowers together!
At the beginning of the week I re-mulched the front garden with a homemade mulch mix - woodchips (from a dead tree we had taken down last fall) that had been composting since then with deep litter from the chook coop…and then bags of used coffee grounds mixed in. Plants seem happy with it. 😜
🌼I have large size Echinacea , Rudbeckia & Lavender available today. 🌸

A photo of 🐝s enjoying the Borage flowers. This is another enthusiastic self-seeder. Flowers are edible and the leaves can be used in a number of ways. A beautiful and useful plant. 💙

🧄A note to let my usual garlic customers know ( or to remind those of you who I have already seen and spoken with) that last year I decided not to grow garlic for market anymore. I am taking steps to simplify “ life on the farm” and this felt like a big one. After about 12 years of growing it, I was ready for a break. 🙂
🧄 There are several other folks growing garlic in the North Okanagan and garlic is usually available from vendors at the Farmers Market as well. Thank you for being a supportive part of my garlic years. 🙂

Picking, picking, picking…such a delicious time of year. Especially love the golden raspberry. 💛
Also shown is the first tayberry of the season. 😜
Strawberries, blackcurrants, red currants and the Saskatoons are starting to ripen as well ( those are mostly treats for the birds here).
Now to think of some more ways to use the abundance of blackcurrants…thinking about making a blackcurrant vinegar concentrate to use as a refreshing drink.

I may have a tendency to “ overseed” in my gardens 😜…and it definitely seems to be the case with poppies this year.
🌸Each year I collect loads of my seed heads thinking that I will get around to selling them in the springtime…and each springtime I get busy with potting up plants and other gardeny thing and forget to. The 🐝s are going crazy over the poppies just now. Folks often ask me if I sell potted poppy plants when they see my gardens. I find them a bit tricky to transplant so I don’t sell the plants but I think this autumn I will have little bags of the seed heads available for sale so that folks can “ overseed” them in their own gardens. Sowing seeds in autumn is my favourite way to grow many perennials - I find it much more successful than spring sowing. 🌸

🌱Started picking my blackcurrants yesterday. Most of them will be put in bags in the freezer to be used in the winter or processed later as I sometimes like to mix them with elderberries once they are ready. I have 3 potted plants available still and I may pot up more as time allows. Pm me to order a shrub so you can grow your own. A fantastic and easy shrub to grow- I also use the leaves in teas and tinctures.
🌸I also have pots of good size Echinacea plants ( purple coneflower) - a beautiful and very useful plant. I use it in tincture making as well. 🌸

🌱Potting up more Golden Oregano, Feverfew & Chives so if you wanted some and didn’t get any feel free to message to get some today. I potted up more large pot Rudbeckia too and may have a few blanket flower soon.
💚Yesterday I spent some time with my compost piles ( main composting area shown below but I have several more around the property). It seems that I can never get enough composting space. 😜 Pondering adding another wooden bay.
🌱I’ll put current plant list 👇 in comments.

Stand is open today and for a few more days ( after that I will take a little break and then plants will be available by order - it gets too hot to have them in the stand in their pots).
My mock orange shrubs are blooming on the property and the scent is divine! I have a few small potted ones available - easy care, drought-tolerant shrub. My feverfew is blooming and I have more available again in little pots. Still time to get blackcurrant shrubs planted if you want to add an easy fruit to your yard.
🌱I will put the plant list below.👇 PM me if you want to order some for pick up today. Thanks 😊

Stand is open today. An assortment of everything. If you’ve been wanting to add an easy fruit to your yard, I find blackcurrants simple to grow. There are some available still and some have fruit forming on them. 😋
A few pics - currants on shrubs in stand, lavender about to bloom in my garden ( have lots of plants available in pots). Yarrow blooming, the lamb’s ear I planted last month settling in ( still have some small pots available) and a little wasp nest I found back by a Linden tree ( a few pot sizes of Linden trees available) blown out in the wind.
Feel free to message if you want to arrange a plant pick up today. 🌸

Even though we sometimes have deer on the property, and I have been seeing a lot of evidence of them ( nibbled trees and plants) lately, it was still a surprise to look up from my washing up after dinner to see this fellow out the kitchen window. They don’t usually choose to rest so close to the house.

Who likes “ before” and “after” pics?
Yesterday my husband found a photo that I had taken of one side of the property from 8 years ago ( second photo below) when I had just started my “ hedgerow “ planting, so I just had to go take a photo from the same spot to record the difference. Sometimes…in the work of growing, planting and maintaining it can be easy to forget how far you have come. Even I was surprised to see the old photo. 8 years on you can see the difference ( in first photo below). My suggestion if you want to transform a property- keep on planting! 😜
Third pic shows Amur maple in bloom right now - ❤️ this drought-tolerant tree, as do the 🐝s. Fourth pic shows Red Osier Dogwood- another favourite shrub that I use A Lot on this property- birds love the berries ( as do my chooks) and it grows easily and is drought tolerant.
Stand open today with a little bit of everything. PM me if you want something particular set aside for pick up today. 🙂
