area. The charity is entirely reliant on donations and is run by English trustees and Egyptian/English management in Luxor and in the UK. This page is not monitored 24/7. If you have any concerns about an animal on Luxor's west bank please call 01002952215.. For general information please contact UK Managing Trustee Angela on [email protected]

Back out in the villages yesterday Dr Mahmoud treated donkeys, horses, dogs and cats. New soft tack replaced painful chains and rope for the donkeys and new collars for dogs. Flea, tick and worm treatment is the most common treatment we find necessary and it makes such a big difference to the health and comfort of the animals.

Such a beautiful mother and foal! They were both treated for worms at the AWOL centre. It's essential that we offer these basic treatments free of charge to keep the animals healthy and comfortable. All our funding for treatment comes from our supporters so we cannot do it without you!

We do whatever we can to save an animal and euthanasia is always a last resort but sometimes it just cannot be avoided as in the case of this poor horse. Having lost an entire hoof and gone for treatment elsewhere he was suffering from gangrene in his foot and septicaemia had set in. He also had an old break which had been set incorrectly so already had some difficulty walking. There was nothing that could be done for him so all we could do was give him a peaceful ending. 🥲

This poor little cat came to the AWOL centre a couple of weeks ago with a badly broken rear leg. Unfortunately it was a very bad compound break which could not be set so the only option (apart from euthanasia) was to amputate the entire leg. The surgery was completely successful and the owner let us know that the cat was getting around very well soon after the procedure. During our mobile clinic we caught up with the cat and his owner and he has also been back into the centre for a check-up. We are very pleased to see that he is doing very well and has made a complete recovery from his ordeal.

During our latest mobile clinic out in the villages yesterday we treated 33 donkeys, 10 dogs, 1 horse and 1 cat. in addition to the 10 donkeys, 4 horses and 6 dogs treated at the AWOL centre that makes 65 animals who received care from AWOL yesterday.
Most donkeys treated in the villages were suffering from worms and mange plus a case of hoof rot but one had a wound at the base of his tail after being bitten by another donkey - this was given treatment and the owner asked to come to the centre for further treatment. The donkeys were all fitted with free new tack where necessary.
The dogs were treated for fleas/ticks, worms and mange and given soft dog collars if needed. The one horse treated had a nasty head wound which was cleaned and disinfected and the owner asked to bring him to the AWOL centre tomorrow for further treatment.

This little cat came to us with a hugely swollen eye. Having already been taken somewhere else for treatment and told the only option was euthanasia the owner then came to the AWOL centre. There was no information regarding any injury or reason for this horrible condition. We kept the cat at the centre and initially treated it with eye drops to reduce the swelling a little. It was clear that the eye could not be saved so it needed to be removed surgically. The surgery went well and after a couple of days the cat went home to recuperate. We are very happy to report that she has made a full recovery and is doing very well.

This old boy is one of our latest residents. We checked on him last year when he was spotted by tourists and at that time he had an owner who was looking after him so although he had mobility problems he was fed and had fresh water. Last month though when went to check on him the owner no longer wanted him and he was suffering in the heat so we brought him back to the AWOL centre. He has old injuries which cannot be fixed but which do not give him any pain. Initially he was kept separate from our other residents but soon settled down and is now happy to chill out in the shade with them. He is quite an old boy but will be able to live out his remaining years in peace and comfort at the AWOL centre.

How cute is this?! This beautiful little cat was brought in by her owner who had made a special little house for her complete with curtains and her name on it! This little one had been bitten by another cat (probably jealous!) So needed antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. Once the wound had been cleaned up and treated she went back home with her loving owner. This is a lucky well cared-for little cat!

This street dog was very kindly brought in by a local expat to be spayed to stop any more unwanted puppies being left on the streets. After the procedure she recovered for a couple of days at the AWOL centre before being collected and taken back to her territory a couple of days ago.

The only way to stop so many unwanted and uncared-for dogs being on the streets is to spay or castrate as many as possible. We neuter all dogs free of charge but, of course, are always grateful for donations. We are very pleased that there are some people who will help by bringing in street dogs.

This beautiful cat has been with us for over 6 weeks. Originally taken somewhere else for treatment and told the only option was to euthanise the cat the owner came to the AWOL centre. The poor cat had a fractured jaw from an unknown accident. The only option, apart from putting him to sleep, was to try to stabilise the jaw over a long period of care. For the first few weeks fluids were given intravenously along with painkillers. This meant the cat did not have to move his jaw and gave it a good chance of healing itself. After a few weeks the cat was able to eat liquid foods but stayed with us until we were sure he had made a complete recovery and was able to eat normally again.

Eventually it was decided that he was fully recovered and his delighted owner came to collect him. We are so happy that this beautiful cat was saved!

Some of the dogs and donkeys we treated on our latest mobile clinic. Bad uncomfortable tack was replaced with new soft tack for the donkeys and dog collars fitted to replace dangerous chains. Our regular mobile clinics not only help us reach more animals and treat minor problems the owners probably wouldn't bring to the AWOL centre - they also help make people aware of the comprehensive free treatment we offer at the AWOL centre.

We are absolutely delighted to be able to let our supporters and patients know that we now have our own X-ray equipment at the AWOL centre! This is a brand new latest model and will be of enormous benefit to our work. Dr Shady is already familiar with this equipment and will be training our other vets to make the most of this wonderful resource. We are so proud to have possibly the best X-ray equipment for animals in Luxor!

This is a very naughty cat! Recently spayed at the AWOL centre she was recovering well at home until the collar was taken off and she nibbled her scar. Having been treated again with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories the collar went back on and will hopefully stay there until the fur has grown a little more and she's completely healed.

Two beautiful mother cats with their babies. The first one was brought in off the street and was given a check-up then treated for mange and given medication to improve her milk production. The other cat came in with her four babies and was treated for worms and a mild case of mange. We offer free spay and neuter for dogs and cats but the local owners are often reluctant to accept as they think of it as unnatural. We persevere however and have spayed and neutered many animals at the AWOL centre.

We see a lot of cases of mange at the AWOL centre - it can affect dogs, donkeys, horses amd most animals. It is caused by mites burrowing into the skin and is extremely uncomfortable for the animal. This poor dog had quite a bad case do must have been so distressed and very itchy. Treatment with anti-parasitic meds and antibiotics will have him feeling better soon and the heavy neck chain was replaced with a new soft collar.

A nasty nasal wound brought this donkey to the AWOL centre. The outer nasal flap had been quite badly torn and needed stiching under anaesthetic. He has been back in 4 times for treatment and check-ups and has made a complete recovery from his injury. We are always pleased when owners take the time to bring their animals back when asked as so often they do not.

Our little Aswan puppy Nefi is making fantastic progress and has made good friends with our young three-legged girl. Our new exercise area can be divided into two areas so Nefi can play with her new friend safely away from the bigger dogs as she's still a little baby but growing stronger every day! ❤

It's been a busy day today as we were out in the villages with our mobile clinic as well as treating animals at the AWOL centre. We treated 27 donkeys, 12 dogs, 2 horses and two cats. Most problems were mange, fleas/ticks, worms and minor injuries. All animals were treated and new tack and collars were fitted where necessary.

Yesterday we went out to Hatshepsut's temple to see this black and white dog who we were told had a facial wound. It's not always easy to find dogs at Hatshepsut's temple as it is such a big area and the dogs often go up into to hills and can't be found. Luckily this one was located and treated for its wound, which is not serious, and all the dogs we could find were checked over and treated for worms, fleas, ticks and mange.

The owner of this donkey had made some effort to keep him comfortable by using a back cushion under the wooden bridge and a soft cover over his noseband but he hadn't thought to take care of his neck. The rope used as a headcollar has cut into the neck of the donkey causing a nasty wound which is so common here. After cleaning and dressing the wound and treatment with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories the donkey was fitted with a new soft headcollar made at the AWOL centre. He will feel much more comfortable now.

This lovely lady is very, very, lucky! We went out to a west bank village twice to fetch her but on the first attempt she evaded us. Luckily we were able to find her on the second attempt. We were called because of the injured paw which was badly swollen with a missing claw. This was treated with antibiotics immediately but our vets suspected that she might be pregnant and there might be a problem.

An ultrasound showed that she was carrying dead part-term puppies and her health was at serious risk. An unpleasant- smelling discharge suggested infection which could have proved fatal left untreated. She underwent emergency surgery to remove the dead foetuses and was also spayed.

After two weeks at the AWOL centre she has made a wonderful recovery and was able to go back home in time for Eid - taken there by Ahmed and Dr Mahmoud. She is a very lucky girl to still be alive!
