Why do we poo pick?

⬇️ Decrease the worm burden
- By poo picking, you will considerably reduce the number of parasites in your fields, as worm eggs thrive in horse poo.

🌱 Grass quality
- When piles of manure are left on the field, vegetation is destroyed and bare patches appear in the field.

🪰 Flies
- Droppings will inevitably attract flies, the bites of these insects are painful and spread disease.

⚠️ Spot poisonous plants
- While you're poo picking it's prime time to keep a lookout for poisonous plants, such as ragwort.

INSURANCE CLAIMS! 📝

⭐ START A CLAIM
Contact your insurance company to let them know you plan on making a claim, they will then send you a claim form for you to fill in and sign. Once you have completed your section send it in to us, where the treating vet will fill it in.

⭐ CHECK YOUR POLICY
Check your policy wording to determine your excess, if there are any exclusions that may affect your claim and whether extras; such as supplements, travel and farriery are covered under your policy.

⭐ ADMINISTRATION FEE
We charge an administration fee for completing your claims form and writing any reports that the insurance company require. This is payable ONCE per claim.

Stay tuned for more information regarding insurance claims later this week!

INSURANCE CLAIMS 📝

⭐ CONTINUATION CLAIMS
We will endeavour to send on continuation claims forms (for those that require) and invoices for any further treatment related to the condition of which the insurance claim is claims for. For insurance companies that do require continuation claims forms you will need to provide a completed continuation claims form signed by
yourself so that the treating vet can complete their section and send it onto the insurance company.

*If further treatment occurs several months after the initial treatment, please at the time of booking confirm you will be providing a continuation claims form for the treatment.

INSURANCE CLAIMS! 📝

⭐ PAYMENT
- Please remember that the account held with Abbey Equine Clinic is the responsibility of the named account holder. For insurance claims the role of the insurance company is to reimburse the policyholder for the fees paid for the veterinary treatment covered under the terms of the policy for a specific condition.
- Therefore, all invoices should be settled in full within our terms of business, even if reimbursement has not been received from the insurance company.
Some insurance companies will agree to make payment directly to us. We will consider accepting payment directly from the insurance company if a valid, complete claims form has been submitted and payment of the insurance excess and admin fee have been made. This should, ideally, be at the time of initial treatment but in all cases MUST be within 14 days of treatment.

⭐ IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE
- It remains your responsibility to contact your insurance company to check the progress of your claim and to let us know immediately if there is anything further that they require from us to ensure the claim is dealt with quickly.
- It is your responsibility to remain aware of how much money has been claimed, how much remains for further treatment and how long the claim period is. There are various factors outside of our control (ie farriery, supplements, physio etc) which may have been paid directly to you which we are unaware.
- Even if you request that your insurance company settle directly with Abbey Equine Clinic, you will still receive your monthly invoice whilst there is an outstanding balance on the account as you will be responsible for settling the account if they are slow or refuse to accept liability for the claim.

Please if you do have any further queries or questions in relation to making an insurance claim for your horse or pony then please don’t hesitate to contact the office where we will be more than happy to help.

✈️ Are you travelling your horse/pony abroad? 🛳

You also need to:
apply for an export health certificate (EHC)
meet isolation and residency requirements

⭐ Foot Balance and Laminitis Radiographs ⭐

We are currently offering foot balance radiographs for £144 plus your visit fee.

Foot balance via trimming and shoeing is an essential part of caring for your horse’s feet. Poor foot balance can cause lameness and often contribute to lameness conditions and back pain. Corrective farriery can be recommended by the vet to improve the foot balance as part of treatment. Farriers will work closely alongside vets, frequently using radiographs as guidance and will form a treatment plan to correct the problem. These include cases of;

🐴 Limb deformities in foals
🐴 Poor foot conformation/balance
🐴 Routine remedial farriery
🐴 Older horses with bowed tendon
🐴 Hoof injuries
🐴 Laminitis cases

If you would like to advantage of our offer please contact either our Abergavenny office on 01873 840069 or our Chepstow office on 01291 444877 to book an appointment with your farrier or prior to their appointment.

📖Vaccine Reminder Service📖

While we try our best to remind clients. It is possible that sometimes, like many computer systems it can have glitches. The message may not be delivered if the mobile is switched off or out of service at the time the reminders are sent. We accept no responsibility for missed vaccinations. It is ultimately the owner’s responsibility to ensure that vaccinations are done at the correct time, so please put the next date in your diary as soon as a vaccination is done by our vet.

As of the 01st January 2024 a number of equine federations (British Dressage, Pony Club, Riding Club etc) are following suit with British Horse Racing Authority and amending the timescales for the initial flu vaccination course to be administered as below:

22/07/2024

Regular physiotherapy is an essential part of any horse’s management. It can help support competition fitness, as well as happy hackers and retirees, it can aid maintenance of ongoing conditions, but is also important in rehabilitation following injury or a surgical procedure.

Maintenance physiotherapy focuses on posture, suppleness, balance and range of motion. By improving all these it allows the horse to activate and engage the right muscles, building strength and improving performance. It can also help prevent injury through identification of changes before they become a problem. Where there is an ongoing condition, such as osteoarthritis, regular physio aims to support and strengthen the muscles associated with the affected joints, as well as address compensations in other areas of the body. It can improve joint range of motion and also help alleviate pain related to the arthritis.

Rehabilitation physiotherapy following surgery or injury aims to gradually reintroduce work in a safe and controlled manner, while addressing pain and compensations to preserve a happy, balanced and strong horse. These programmes are generally of an extended duration but are tailored specifically to the individual.

Our very own vet, Helen Vaughan, is a qualified physiotherapist, if you would like to get your horse booked in then CALL the clinic on 01873 840069 🐴

⚠️Traveling and Competing in Hot Weather☀️

Lorries and trailers can become exceptionally hot especially when in stationary traffic. Stop regularly on long journeys to offer water and check for overheating particularly if there are no fans or air conditioning. If at all possible, transport your horse during the coolest part of the day. Once arriving at the venue, it’s advisable to unload your horse and tie him/her up in the shade.

A horse’s water intake can increase double fold during hot weather. When traveling and competing ensure they have access to plenty of fresh water. If your horse dislikes the taste of different water then take some from home or try adding peppermint cordial or apple juice. Offer water after the warm-up period, before competing and immediately after.

Electrolytes are minerals that dissolve in the blood and tissues of the body, and they help to preserve the correct balance of fluids in the body’s cells. Electrolytes are lost daily through sweating, in urine and faeces. Adding an electrolyte supplement to your horse’s diet or administering a paste will to help restore any electrolyte imbalances caused by sweating associated with travel and exercise - these are available through Abbey Equine Clinic.

Remember, light coloured horses and those with pink skin are at risk of sunburn, and will need sunscreen.

In hot weather horses warm-up more rapidly but also tire more quickly, as a result of this allow your horse a shorter warm-up period. It is important to be aware of your horse’s fitness level, and as they can tire more quickly in the hot weather, don’t over exert them.

Once finished competing, walk your horse for short periods until he/she has cooled down in order to prevent muscle spasms. Ensure you have copious amounts of cold water to cool your horse down which can be either sponged on or applied using a hosepipe. A greater cooling effect can be achieved by adding ice to the water and will help to reduce your horse’s body temperature more rapidly. Don’t place a sheet or blanket on your horse as this can block water evaporation from the skin. Don’t scrape the excess water off as they cool rapidly by evaporation: a wet horse cools quicker than a dry one!

🌼RAGWORT AWARENESS🌼

Ragwort rosettes are seen to begin growing. From May to October these begin flowering. If you aren't aware already, consumption of ragwort can be catastrophic to horses, ponies and donkeys. ☹️

When eaten, ragwort contains toxic compounds which the liver cannot remove which causes damage. Once the liver cells are damaged, they cannot regenerate and instead form fibrous tissue. In severe cases, there are not enough healthy cells for the liver to function leading to liver failure. The toxic effects or ragwort are also cumulative, so even small amounts consumed over long periods can be problematic.

Know your clinical signs!
🔹 Colic
🔹 Diarrhoea
🔹 Skin photosensitisation
🔹 Weight loss
🔹 Jaundice
🔹In severe cases, in-coordination, head pressing, blindness and death.

❗️Prevention = Better than cure❗️

The British Horse Society has a useful tool-kit from safe removal and disposal of Ragwort here:

🌟Congratulations Dave on your impressive 20-year career at Abbey Equine 🌟

We would like to thank our very own vet David Holman MRCVS for reaching a huge milestone. You make 20 years of tenure look easy but we all know you’ve put in the countless hours of effort to become the true professional you are today. Hard work, loyalty and diligence are just a few words that would encapsulate Dave’s ethos. Dave has seen many changes since joining a small team at Brecon House in Crickhowell 20 years ago. The motivation and encouragement you’ve given to owners, work colleagues and veterinary students throughout the years has been inspirational. May you continue to inspire us with your unfaltering hard work, and dedicated commitment to the veterinary world. As we say at the clinic “Be like Dave”.

We are so lucky and grateful to have you - thank you Dave!
