Personally, parks that are heaving with dogs really unsettle me. Not because my dogs are an issue, but because I find them chaotic places where rude behaviours are misunderstood, tolerated or even somewhat encouraged.

I often have clients come to me with dogs that used to be ‘great with other dogs’ and would play with everybody at the park.

But now they’re reactive.

I see 3 major common causes of reactivity in dogs from dog parks:

1️⃣ The dog has learnt that EVERYBODY has to play with them.

This then causes frustration when they’re on the lead and they see another dog. They are frustrated because the lead prevents access to their favourite thing. So they lose their mind and bark. The owner either then subsequently allows access to the other dog (because he is actually friendly 😉) which reinforces the behaviour and increases the likelihood of it happening again. Or they restrict further access to other dogs through fear their dog is aggressive, causing further frustration based reactivity because suddenly the dog can’t ever access their favourite thing.

2️⃣ The dog loses their somewhat natural ability to read other dogs. They get caught up in the chaos of EVERYBODY wants to play with me and they get pushy with other dogs, regardless of what the other dog’s body language is saying.

Then boom 💥 …the dog hits adolescence, is basically a bolshy teenager and charges in on dogs bypassing the subtleties of dog body language (because everyone wants to play right). He gets repeatedly nailed by other dogs who won’t put up with that. Suddenly you have a dog who gets worried by other dogs because they’ve repeatedly been nailed by other dogs. So they start getting in first, through fear of being nailed.

3️⃣ You take your impressionable young puppy to a busy dog park and they are exposed to dogs 1️⃣ and 2️⃣. They get scared. Or worse they get hurt and scared 😢 they learn they have to protect themselves which means being hostile to other dogs.

So…
To use these fields correctly. Stand at a distance where your dog can focus on you and train them. Train them to be with you. Let them watch other dogs and not be scared.

Be selective about who they meet, because meeting everybody isn’t necessary.

Did you know veterinary surgeons are not only responsible for the health of the animals they treat but are an essential and integral part of health at large. The application of veterinary science contributes not only to animal health and well-being but also to humans physical, mental and social well-being.

Animal welfare is an important issue for many local people.

I recently attended a drop-in event held by FOUR PAWS, RSPCA (England & Wales), Cats Protection, Dogs Trust and Battersea about the Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats & Ferrets) Bill and will be supporting its proposals when it comes before MPs for its Second Reading this Friday.

It's Horse Of The Week Time! Everyone meet Sapphire 🐴

Sapphire is a 13-year-old, 14hh mare, who is looking for a new home as a non-ridden companion. She is very genuine, sweet-natured pony, but she can become a little anxious at times so needs a quiet and patient handler. Her ideal home would be with other ponies as she doesn't like being on her own.

📌 Sapphire is based at World Horse Welfare Glenda Spooner Farm, Somerset

Could you offer Sapphire a loving home? Find out more information and apply today 👉 https://bit.ly/4bHT3N7

Studies show that, for overweight people, losing (and keeping off) 5 - 10% of your body weight can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of stroke and diabetes, and improve blood cholesterol levels, asthma, sleep apnoea and mobility.
To encourage you to lose 10% and keep it off (or reduce it further) for 10 weeks, I am offering you a 'Club 10' FREE week when you achieve this.
Whatsmore, you can also have FREE membership with the below mentioned voucher which is valid until 11th March.
What a lot of reasons to celebrate!
