Further to notification received from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency regarding blue/green algae blooms found at Antrim Loughshore Park, the slipway at Antrim Loughshore Park will be closed until further notice for launching personal watercraft such as kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and jet skis.

People are advised not to swallow, swim, or allow pets in the water. Avoid all contact with the algae, as contact may result in skin rashes, eye irritation, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, and/or muscle and joint pain.

Members of the public can report a suspected bloom through the NIEA incident hotline at T: 0800 80 70 60 or email [email protected] with a photo if possible, and details on the location of the potential bloom.

Alternatively, the free 'Bloomin Algae' App https://www.ceh.ac.uk/our-science/projects/bloomin-algae enables members of the public to submit photos of the bloom taken on their phone and state what activity takes place at the location, so that the potential risks to people and animals can be assessed.

Following tests carried out yesterday, Tuesday 6 June, Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) has confirmed a presence of blue-green algae at Ballyronan Marina and Battery Harbour.

It is advised that all contact with the water is avoided until further notice. Farmers and pet owners should also ensure that their animals do not have access to this water, as the algae can produce toxins that are highly poisonous and often fatal to pets.

The Council has erected signage warning the public of the presence of the algae at these sites and advise that dogs are kept on leads at all times.

For further information and advice please contact the Council’s Environmental Health department on: 03000 132 132 or email [email protected]

It has just been brought to my attention that several dogs have died in the last 24hours of being on the shore of lough Melvin at the park in Garrison. There is no visible algae in the water but a sludge on the shoreline and several of the dogs rolled in.
A distressed dog owner got in touch to say her dog last night died 25 mins after being in contact with this sludge!!!!
Please share this far and wide so no one else has to suffer the distress of loosing a beloved pet!
I’m also concerned as my son was swimming in the lake during the week and had been vomiting today!!!!!
I was at the lake tonight with my pup and this is not good, it’s a beautiful place loved by so many!!!
So til we find out what this is keep your dogs on leads and away from the water and shore line

Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) has confirmed a presence of blue-green algae and Hemlock Water Dropwort in Lough Neagh ⬇️

NIEA were alerted on Friday 19 May 2023 to a report of the death of a dog that had been in the water at Lough Neagh.

NIEA carried out a number of tests over a few days to investigate if there was evidence of an algal bloom in the water. No visual evidence of an algal bloom, dead fish or any other signs of water pollution including sewage were detected at that time.

As a precautionary measure a water sample was taken for algal analyses. No blue green algae were found in the water sample analysed by NIEA.

Further samples were collected along the shore at Rea’s wood on 23 May 2023 and analysis has confirmed the presence of an algae called Microcystis sp. in small amounts washed up on the shore. Microcystis sp., is a blue green algae which can produce toxins that are highly poisonous and often fatal to pets.

In addition, a large amount of the toxic but fairly common plant Hemlock Water Dropwort (Oenanthe crocata) was observed growing in the wooded area along Rea’s Wood.

Hemlock water dropwort (poison parsnip) is perhaps the most poisonous indigenous plant in Britain and Ireland. This is a native plant, not an invasive species, and it grows mostly in wet meadows along river courses and adjacent to lakes. It is highly toxic to humans and domesticated animals if ingested - although the roots are more toxic than the above-ground parts.

Dog Owners should always be aware of the dangers posed by all poisonous plants and algae growing in the environment, but especially along riverbanks and in wet grassland or edges of lakes.

The Council has erected signage warning the public of the presence of blue-green algae and Hemlock Water Dropwort in the area and advising that dogs are kept on a lead at all times.
