Pretty Lady Margo!

Margo is a very nice 3.5yr old Retired Greyhound, she came to us for rehoming after she stopped racing.

Margo is quiet by nature, and is a pleasure to have around the kennels. She’s good on her walks, and enjoys getting out and about. She could live with sensible children. She is friendly and affectionate.

She walks out with the other Greyhounds in our care, without any issues and doesn’t seem too phased by the other breeds of dog on site either. She’s not cat friendly.

Margo has always lived in kennels, and won’t be familiar with all of the household sounds - we’re confident that with a bit of time, she will adapt well to a new home. She may not be 100% housetrained.

November 2023…..our 19th birthday 🎂

We can’t believe it’s been 19 years since we opened our doors to our centre with a swimming pool and hot tub treating just 1-2 dogs a week. Fast forward 19 years…..

Thousands of dogs have passed through our doors over the years, some rabbits and cats too!

Chuck in a few weddings, new babies, new treadmills, closing of the pool and earlier this year a Class 4 laser machine.

We’ve gone from strength to strength and the team stays the same 💕

Old friends and new friends, we’ve loved treating all of your doggies over the years…here’s to the next 19 🥂

🐾 So.. you have been told that your dog needs a hemilaminectomy, but what does this mean? 🤔

Also known as decompression surgery, a hemilaminectomy is a type of surgery commonly used to manage injuries and spinal conditions such as intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), which can cause spinal compression in dogs and cats.

Pressure on the spinal cord or nerves results in:
Muscle pain
Muscle weakness - Wobbly limbs
Urination issues
Paralysis

The hemilaminectomy reduces this pressure by removing part of one side of a vertebra, which allows removal of the extruded disc material from the canal.
An incision is made above the vertebral foramen to access the vertebra, creating a window through which the disc material can be removed. To do this, a hole is drilled under the disc, from where the problematic bone is removed.

A hemilaminectomy can take between one and three hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure, and it can be carried out in combination with another form of disc surgery known as fenestration surgery.

Once your pet is recovered from the anaesthetic, they will usually remain in our hospital for around 3 days. This is to ensure our nursing team can monitor their urination output. Some dogs may need a urinary catheter placed depending on their mobility, whilst others may need a helping hand to express their bladder. Our nursing team will also start gentle physiotherapy, administer pain relief, monitor vitals such as temperature, heart rates and respiratory rates and monitor fluid therapy alongside a tailored feeding plan and give enrichment such as toys, lickimats and cuddles to prevent boredom within the hospital period.

Most dogs take around six to eight weeks to recover and be able to walk again, but the time can vary. Some get better quickly, while others, particularly if they’re suffering with chronic disc disease, can take longer to recover. And sadly, for some, there’s no improvement.

Post-op, it’s really important that the spinal cord has a chance to recover slowly. That means no:
Running
Jumping
Climbing stairs
Playing with other animals
Leaping on or off furniture

Our wonderful neurology team have a wealth of experience and knowledge to help your pet get back to a happy & fulfilled life! ❤️
